Aquila Erskine

Aser Mata

Job Titles:
  • Research Scientist
Data processing and software developments within the facility. Takes care of airborne hyperspectral sensor calibration. Aser is also a CAA certified Small Unmanned Aircraft (SUA) Operator as well as the Plymouth Marine Laboratory SUA Accountable Manager making him involved in drone data acquisition as well. Biography Aser is a physicist who joined PML back in 2015. Moving from his theoretical background into more interdisciplinary career paths and achieved a Master in Renewable Energy. Remote Sensing granted him the harmony between theoretical, applied science and his ethos he was aiming to achieve. Above everything else, he enjoys physics and solving problems in order to collaborate towards a better and sustainable world. Interested Areas of Expertise: Satellite and Airborne data. Airborne data usually being its main focus; Aser participates in all stages involved from software developing, data processing and analysis. He is also experienced in airborne hyperspectral optical sensor calibration where he participates with an active role in the laboratory and processing the data.

Dr Angus Laurenson

  • Scientific Python Developer
Angus develops software to support satellite data processing and AI/ML workflows. Biography Angus studied Physics at the University of Exeter, where he obtained first an MPhys, then PhD, in the field of micro-magnetism. Soon after, he joined Plymouth Marine Laboratory in the role of scientific Python developer, where he provides scientific and technical support to research projects and helps to build capability at PML, through peer learning and the development of new tools.

Dr Dan Clewley

Dan is the manager of NEODAAS and takes care of day-to-day operation of the service and overseeing new developments.

Dr David Moffat

Job Titles:
  • AI Researcher
  • Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Data Scientist
David is an AI and ML Data Scientist as part of NEODAAS. He works on applying Artifical Intelligence and Machine Learning techniques to Earth Observation data to formulate a better understanding of the natural world. Biography David is an applied AI researcher. His background is in applied AI, with a focus on audio and time series data, after having studied Artificial Intelligence and Computer Science(BSc) at Edinburgh University, before studying digital signal processing, digital music processing and computer science at Queen Mary University of London (MSc. and PhD). Since then, he has worked as a post doctoral researcher and academic.

Dr Mark Warren

Job Titles:
  • Research Software Engineer
Mark develops algorithms and maintains software used by NEODAAS. Biography Mark started life as a mathematician before gaining a PhD in space geodesy specialising in subsidence monitoring using Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). Since then he has been instrumental in the smooth running of the NERC ARF airborne data service, with expertise in algorithm development for airborne hyperspectral and LiDAR data, SAR and optical satellite data.

Dr Nick Selmes

Nick is a developer for NEODAAS, creating new products to expand the capabilities of the service. Biography Nick followed a degree in Geography and a Masters in GIS and remote sensing with a PhD in remote sensing of supraglacial lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet and their role in ice sheet dynamics. He then completed a postdoctoral position in innovative in-situ monitoring of marine-terminating glaciers before joining PML in 2015. His main research interests are the use of Earth Observation data to study the changing cryosphere, particularly glacier hydrology and glacier dynamics, and to improve water quality measurements over inland waters.

Dr Nicola Martin

  • Research Software Engineer With a Background in Mathematics
Nicola supports NEODAAS users via the Code Optimisation Service, to improve the efficiency of their software using best practices and modern technologies. Biography Nicola is a Research Software Engineer with a background in Mathematics. She completed a PhD based on simulating laser-matter interactions before working at the Met Office as a Scientific Software Engineer in the Seasonal Forecast team. Since joining PML in 2019, Nicola has been developing tools and visualisations for a range of applications, working on operational workflow design for Earth Observation products and creating portable software. Nicola is interested in using best practices in software engineering to improve the useability and efficiency of scientific applications, and transforming data into information.

Silvia Pardo

Job Titles:
  • Research Scientist
Silvia provides technical and scientific advice for data provision & development of the NEODAAS ocean colour catalogue. Biography Silvia holds a MSc in Cosmology and Particle Physics, and a Bsc(Tech) in Computer Science. She worked in high-energy astrophysics until 2013, when she joined the PML Remote Sensing Group. Silvia specialises in validation of Ocean Colour sensors, algorithm development and chlorophyll trends and anomalies.

William Jay

Job Titles:
  • Research Scientist
Will predominately processes airborne data while there is a campaign but otherwise processes satellite data for users along with ongoing development and maintenance of NEODAAS's processing code. Biography Will studied BSc. Geography with a particular interest in remote sensing applications before moving onto GIS jobs; from mapping farms and irrigation systems in Eswatini to mine shafts in Cornwall. After an internship aiding research to monitor vegetation using a ground based radar, Will joined NEODAAS to develop his remote sensing knowledge and programming skills.
