AMCHP recognizes that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to the language used when referring to people with disabilities. In our work, we aim to use person-first language but recognize that not everyone living with a disability prefers that type of language. While we recognize the negative connotation that some individuals feel when they hear the terms "special health care needs", that is the language AMCHP uses most frequently because it is tied to Title V of the Social Security Act of 1935, which funds the majority of our Association members' work via the Maternal and Child Health Services Block Grant. AMCHP's programs place equity and Universal Design at the center and we utilize a "Health in all Policies" approach. We firmly believe that building stronger systems to support children with special health care needs and disabilities will not only improve their circumstances but will also benefit the entire community.
