Adrian joined the Bar Council in May 2007. He began his career as a graduate trainee for an insurance company. Then, for 12 years he worked for the national institutions of the Church of England, during which time he also obtained an MA in Biblical Studies from King's College London.
Throughout his time at the Bar Council, Adrian has worked in barristers' remuneration, including legal aid fee schemes, private funding such as conditional fee agreements, and the taxation of self-employed barristers. From 2019 Adrian was given the additional responsibility of Legal Practice, including engagement with HM Courts & Tribunal Service on court reform. Adrian is the Executive of the Bar Council's Remuneration Committee, and oversees the Executive of the Legal Services Committee.
Adrian is also an Ethical Advisor on the Ethical Enquiries Service.

Barbara Mills KC is Vice Chair of the Bar 2024. Barbara is a silk and joint head of chambers at 4PB and practises in family law specialising in difficult and complex children cases, often with an international element. Barbara is an arbitrator and a mediator, sits as a Deputy High Court Judge, and has been a Recorder on the South Eastern Circuit for over ten years. Barbara is also a Governing Bencher at Inner Temple.
Barbara chairs the Bar Council's Regulatory Review Working Group and has been a member of the Equality, Diversity and Social Mobility Committee and co-chair of the Race Working Group, which published the landmark Race at the Bar report in 2020.

Caitlin joined the Bar Council in December 2019. Her policy areas include ethics, regulation, direct access and anti-money laundering.
She is the Executive of the Money Laundering Working Group, liaising with external stakeholders and supervisors, and leading on responses to consultations on the regulation of barristers in this area. She is the joint Executive of the Ethics Committee and the Direct Access Panel, assisting in reviewing and producing new ethical guidance documents and promoting the interests of barristers accepting direct access instructions respectively. Caitlin is also the joint Executive of the Regulatory Review Working Group, advising on and researching regulatory policy which impacts the Bar.
Caitlin is one of the advisers on the Ethical Enquiries Service and helps to train new ethical advisers. She is also the interim manager of the Policy Assistant team.
Caitlin studied Law at the University of Sussex before completing the Bar Professional Training Course and being called to the Bar. Prior to joining the Policy Team, Caitlin worked for the Bar Council's Records Office. Her previous professional experience includes working as both a junior associate in an international law firm and in business development for a local law firm in Shanghai.

Carolyn joined the Bar Council in March 2019 and is the organisation's Director of Services. She is responsible for a department of ten and has overall responsibility for the day-to-day management of existing, and effective delivery of new, income-generating products and services to the Bar, including training and events.
As a member of the Bar Council's Senior Management Team, Carolyn contributes to the strategic direction of the organisation and is responsible for improving member engagement, with a view to enhancing the profession's understanding of the Bar Council's role and ensuring positive brand development, particularly in respect of the Services Department's portfolios.
Following her graduation from Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2010, and prior to joining the Bar Council, Carolyn spent nine years working with barristers; originally as an administrator at Garden Court Chambers and, more recently, as a member of Landmark Chambers' Senior Management Team. Whilst working, Carolyn studied part-time for a Graduate Diploma in Law and on the Bar Professional Training Course, which she completed in 2015.

The Retention Panel aims to increase the retention of women in practice and to advise on all matters relating to retention issues at the Bar. Key areas of focus include distribution of work/income monitoring by sex and tackling harassment and bullying. The panel also oversees a programme of work exploring options and barriers to more flexible work at the Bar.

Rose joined the Bar Council in October 2019 and leads the Bar Council's research, data, and analysis work. She oversees all research projects and outputs including surveys (most significantly the Barristers' Working Lives survey), consultancy, reports, and data analysis. This includes working with stakeholders to ensure we have a sound data-led evidence base for our policy and strategy.
Before joining the Bar Council, Rose worked for several years on university research projects at the universities of Sussex and Birkbeck, where she specialised in creating and using big data sets for historical, economic, and legal research.

Eleanor joined the Bar Council in October 2023 and assists on a variety of projects spanning across the Policy Team. She holds a first-class LLB (Hons) law degree with a study year abroad at the University of Bergen, Norway.
Prior to joining the Bar Council, Eleanor completed the Charityworks programme where she worked as an Innovation Portfolio Officer at Motability Foundation. She conducted research, assisted with project management, and engaged with stakeholders.'
Eleanore joined the Bar Council in March 2019. Eleanore studied Law at Exeter University where she was awarded a scholarship to spend a year at the University of Connecticut School of Law. Eleanore subsequently completed the Bar Professional Training Course and was called to the Bar. Prior to joining the Bar Council, Eleanore's roles included working in the legal department for HM Revenue & Customs, serving as a Parliamentary Assistant for a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons and working on a major corporate fraud investigation at the Serious Fraud Office.
Eleanore's work includes responding to regulatory developments which could impact the Bar and contributing to consultation papers commissioned by various regulatory and academic bodies. Eleanore is Executive to the Law Reform Committee and leads on the Annual Law Reform Essay Competition and Annual Law Reform Lecture projects. She is also manager to the Policy Assistant team and an Ethical Adviser on the Ethical Enquiries Service.

Enehuwa joined the Bar Council in October 2023. Enehuwa studied law at the University of Hertfordshire, where she received a First-Class Honours degree and was conferred the title Student of the Cohort in recognition of being the highest ranked student among her graduating class.
After obtaining her law degree, Enehuwa received an Advocacy Scholarship to complete a Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Training for the Bar and was subsequently Called to the Bar in 2022.
Prior to joining the Bar Council, Enehuwa worked as a Policy and External Affairs Officer at the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators and worked in the public sector providing specialist educational support to vulnerable adults and children.
As a Policy Analyst, Enehuwa serves as the Executive for the Legal Services Committee and the Information and Technology Panel. She is also the Co-Chair of the Bar Council/Law Society Cyber Security Working Group. She works with key stakeholders active in legal practice and remuneration to make representations on behalf of the Bar.

Evanna Fruithof was called to the Bar in 1985. She practiced from chambers in 6 Pump Court, London, until her 1990 move to Brussels. During 1990 and 1991 she worked in DG Competition, European Commission, for most of that time within its then newly created Merger Task Force. From 1992 to 1994, Evanna worked as a Competition lawyer for Freshfields Solicitors, in both their London and Brussels offices. Evanna also spent a couple of years as Events Manager and Deputy Director of a Brussels-based EU political think-tank.
She was appointed to establish the Bar Council's Brussels Office in 1999, from which date she has held her current position as its Consultant Director, providing this service through her own consultancy company. She is the eyes, ears and mouthpiece of the Bar in Brussels, organising, attending and on occasion, speaking at meetings and events on its behalf, and giving evidence to external inquiries.
Evanna has run the Bar's EU Law Committee since its founding in 2003 and is a member of the Bar's Future Relationship (formerly Brexit Working) Group, the Bar European Group and the European Circuit. Evanna is regularly invited to speak at events organised by these and other SBAs. She develops the Bar's Brussels office newsletter, Brussels News, and is an occasional contributor to other Bar publications.
Evanna was made a Bencher of the Middle Temple in 2015.
The Bar Council's Brussels office, run by member of the Bar Evanna Fruithof, has been the Bar Council's eyes, ears and mouthpiece in our relations with the EU institutions since 1999.
Evelyn joined the Bar Council in August 2023 and works on a wide range of projects across the Policy Team. She assists in managing the Ethical Enquires service, supporting our Wellbeing at the Bar work and assisting in organising law fairs. She holds an LLB (Hons) in Law and Criminology from the University of Kent.
Prior to joining the Bar Council, Evelyn worked as a policy research intern at Citizens Advice's national office in London. She conducted policy research, data analysis and collection, events planning, and published a blog post.

Hannah joined the Bar Council in August 2022 as Marketing Executive. Her previous experience involves a Marketing Assistant position at a travel company and has joined from a Care Home company as Marketing Executive.
In her role at the care home company, she was responsible for a wide range of marketing activity, for 30 care homes nationwide. This included print adverts, helping the homes promote their events, as well as sending newsletter email and social media updates.
Since completing a degree in marketing with media studies, from the University of East London, Hannah has gone on to study a masters in Global Digital Marketing, which is due to be completed by September 2023.
At the Bar Council, Hannah's role involves working on various marketing activity throughout the website, email and social media. She works closely with the communications team and external partner's, to promote services, training and events and resources to its members and the public.
Hannah is in quite early stages of her career and brings creativity, an eagerness to learn and a passion for all things marketing to her Bar Council role.
In August 2023, Hannan joined the Bar Council as a Policy Assistant. She assists the Policy team with a range of projects, including the management of the Ethical Enquiries service, the development of international programmes for visit delegations, and various research assignments and reports. Prior to joining, she completed a BA (Hons) in History from Kings College London.

Haylie joined the Bar Council in April 2021 as a Policy Assistant before moving to the International Team as International Project Officer in October 2021, where she focuses exclusively on the International Market Access Project. Within the role, Haylie ensures the efficient day-to-day management of the project, liaises with all relevant internal and external stakeholders, and guarantees the timely delivery of project reports.
Prior to the Bar Council, she interned at the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute and the Corporate Justice Coalition.
Haylie previously studied Anthropology at Durham University and subsequently completed a Masters in Global Governance and Ethics at UCL. During her Masters, she was Coordinator of the Global Governance and Ethics Society and was regularly involved in the research and public debates of UCL's Global Governance Institute.

Helen joined the Bar Council in April 2023 as Senior Services Co-Ordinator. Her focus is supporting her service administrators who deal with a wider range of servicing for barristers and chambers. This includes Pupillage Gateway, HMCTS and Direct Access Portal.
Prior to joining, she worked for Barclays Bank for 29 years in various customer service roles , of which one was running a successful solicitors team. After leaving the bank, she worked in a finance office in her son's school for 8 years.

Isi joined the Bar Council in 2022 and has a background in governance and executive support.
Isi provides higher-level management to the governance structure of the Bar Council by ensuring comprehensive and efficient secretariat support to the meetings of the Bar Council, General Management Committee and Representative committees, panels and working groups - ensuring consistency, a coherent approach and shared understanding of the Bar Council's governance framework. Isi manages the implementation of best standards, practice systems and procedures, and reviews current documents relating to committees with a view to strengthening them or identifying gaps.
Isi manages the elections processes for officers and subscribers, and manages the annual cycle of assurance reporting from the Bar Council's committees and to keep under review the effectiveness of reporting arrangements in line with strategic priorities and diversity goals.

Isobel joined the Bar Council in January 2022 as Web Content Officer. Her background is in managing websites across various industries, but mainly in membership organisations and regulatory authorities.
In the UK, Isobel has worked on websites for Imperial College London; the Schools, Students and Teachers Authority (SSAT); the Energy Network Authority; and car companies' websites within an agency. Before moving to the UK from Australia, Isobel improved websites and their processes for the Victorian Building Authority and the Victorian Institute of Teaching. She has also worked in communications and ministerial correspondence with the Victorian state government's Department of Primary Industries, Energy Division, and the now-defunct Department of Infrastructure.
Isobel has training and experience in writing and editing, digital marketing, and design and accessibility best practices for online content. At the Bar Council, her focus is making sure the website follows best practices and is accessible to all of its audiences. She is on maternity leave until late 2023.

Jamie joined the Bar Council in 2022 and has a background in corporate and academic governance.
Jamie manages the executive office and oversees arrangements, policy and procedures for effective governance in adherence with the Bar Council's constitution. Kian joined the Bar Council in November 2022, having moved from the philanthropic sector within a maritime charity.
Prior to this, Kian completed an undergraduate degree in Ancient History with Politics with a semester in China and semester in Industry at the University of Liverpool. He is currently finishing a part-time Masters in Human Rights and Politics at the London School of Economics. Through these areas, Kian became particularly interested in educational rights and increasing access to adequate education.
As the Policy Analyst: Education and CSR, Kian supports the Pro Bono and Social Responsibility Committee, and the Education and Training Committee. His work also involves supporting the Bar Sustainability Network and the Climate Crisis Working Group.

Lorinda Long is a qualified barrister with over 20 years' experience in the Financial Services Sector. She is a Managing Director and Associate General Counsel in the Equities Legal Department at Bank of America, heading up the Cash Equities and Regulatory legal team based in London, providing legal support to the various business lines in Cash Equities, certain Equities Capital Markets and International Banking activities, and other support functions.
Prior to joining Bank of America, Lorinda worked at a number of financial institutions including NatWest Capital Markets, BNP Paribas, Credit Suisse and Barclays specialising in securitisation and debt capital markets. She spent several years as the General Counsel of the Treasury Division at HBOS with responsibility for managing and building a legal department of more than 30 people to provide legal support to the Treasury Division's businesses globally.
Lorinda was previously Treasurer of the Bar Council from 2015 to 2019.

Louise joined the Bar Council as Head of Marketing in June 2022. She joined from Girlguiding where as Marketing Campaigns Manager she was responsible for marketing activity including campaigns to recruit new members and volunteers.
Since completing a degree in public relations and marketing, Louise has built up extensive experience in marketing communications.
Having worked for private, non-profit and membership organisations, she has enjoyed a career to date spanning a range of sectors - events, sports, food, education and skills.
At the Bar Council, Louise and her team are responsible for marketing activity through the website, email and social media. The marketing team works closely with the communications team to promote the organisation's services, events and resources to its members and the public.

Malcolm retired from the Royal Navy in 2016, in the rank of Rear Admiral. He served in all types of ship from Minehunters to Aircraft Carriers and commanded a Destroyer, a Task Group in the Gulf and the Navy's prized Operational Sea Training organisation. He deployed all over the world and served in the Gulf (Tanker War) and Adriatic (Bosnia).
Ashore, he specialised in corporate governance, financial and resource planning, portfolio and programme management and ended his career managing a major transformation programme on behalf of the Navy Board.
On retiring, Malcolm worked for a management consultancy specialising in Decision Analysis, before taking over as Chief Executive of the Bar Council in August 2017.
Malcolm has a Bachelor's degree in Modern History from Bristol University and a Masters in International Relations and Security from King's College London.
He was made a CBE in the 2016 New Year's Honours list.
Mariam joined the Bar Council in November 2021 as a Policy Assistant, where she worked across the four policy teams in the research, development and implementation of policy initiatives and projects. She holds a first-class undergraduate law degree (LLB) and an LLM in Transnational Law from King's College London.
She has previously worked as a research assistant at Royal Holloway, University of London's Department of Law and Criminology and as a freelance legal researcher and writer. In May 2022, Mariam moved to the Regulatory Affairs, Law Reform and Ethics team as a Policy Analyst, where she focuses on Law Reform. In this role, she is the executive of the Law Reform Committee as well as lead on the Annual Law Reform Essay Competition and Annual Law Reform Lecture.
Mariam is also an Ethical Advisor on the Ethical Enquiries Service.

Melisha joined the Bar Council in February 2023. She qualified in India as an advocate before completing a graduate degree in Public Policy and Global Affairs at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver.
Prior to joining the Bar Council, Melisha worked at the Commonwealth Secretariat's Office of Civil and Criminal Justice Reform, where she supported member countries in strengthening their legal and institutional frameworks through the review of legislative and regulatory instruments, and the provision of legal assistance and capacity building tools. While in Vancouver, she worked as a Research Assistant focussing on resource governance and corporate accountability.
Over the years, she has worked with governments and corporations in Ethiopia, Uganda, India, Canada, the Bahamas, Trinidad and Tobago and, most recently, the United Kingdom.
In her current role at the Bar Council, Melisha leads on developing and delivering key Bar Council policy and project work relating to the international interests of the Bar, as well as supporting other rule of law work across the Bar as appropriate. Melisha is currently also training to be an advisor on the Ethical Enquiries Service.

Michelle joined the Bar Council in March 2013 and following the closure of Barco, was promoted to the role of Services Manager in 2019. Working closely with the Director of Services, she leads the day-to-day management of the existing services and products offered to the Bar, including those that form part of the Bar Representation Fee benefits.
Michelle has specific responsibility for the Bar Council's business partnership portfolio, establishing and maintaining key relationships with new and existing commercial partners and other third-party suppliers, and the delivery of both the Immigration Support Scheme and the Pupillage Gateway. Prior to joining the Bar Council, Michelle spent 14 years working at Bank of Ireland.

Natalie joined the Bar Council's Services Team as Services Development Manager in May 2021. Natalie is responsible for the research, development and effective delivery of new projects and services to the Bar, and works closely with the Services Team and Training and Events Team.
Before joining the Bar Council, Natalie worked for 6 months at the Bar Standards Board but her professional background includes programme management, fundraising for major gifts, and volunteer management for volunteer groups in over 120 countries for an international education charity.

Nikita joined the Bar Council in August 2019 where she worked on leading campaigns in the Communications Team before moving to Public Affairs in November 2020. Her work includes the delivery of the Bar Council's public affairs activity in Parliament with stakeholders and the profession as well as raising the Bar Council's profile in Whitehall and Westminster, alongside the Adviser to the Chair.
Prior to joining, she graduated with a Master's in International Studies and Diplomacy from SOAS, University of London. Nikita has previously worked in communications within the fields of politics and non-profit, which have strengthened her interest towards policy, advocacy and public affairs. Phil joined the Bar Council in January 2015. He began his career qualifying as a Scots solicitor after studying Law at the University of Edinburgh. He then worked as a pensions solicitor in London at Slaughter and May and Eversheds LLP. Phil then spent four and a half years working in policy for a military charity in Cyprus, working with the chain of command to represent and promote the interests of Army families.

Piran has a background in politics and public affairs and joined the Bar Council as Adviser to the Chair in September 2019. Her work includes providing strategic advice and counsel to the Chair of the Bar and leading on the Bar Council's activity in Parliament and Whitehall.
Prior to this, she led the public affairs department at the Association of Colleges and focused on government and parliamentary relations and campaigns. Previous roles include working for an MP, MEP and political party. She is a primary school governor, Queen's Anniversary Prize Award Assessor and Advisory Board Member of Get Further, an organisation that helps students to achieve English and maths GCSE. Rachel Krys has been a consultant to the Bar Council Equality Diversity and Inclusion team since 2019 supporting projects to improve the retention and progression of women and under-represented groups at the Bar. Rachel delivers equality, fair recruitment, mentoring and harassment training for the Bar Council and bespoke consultancy for chambers.
Rachel has been an equality and human rights campaigner for more than two decades and has worked with large and small employers to tackle discrimination, analyse, and improve equality outcomes and promote inclusion.
Rhiannon joined the Bar Council as a Communications Officer in September 2023. She joined after working as a journalist, having written for various national newspapers from the Times to the Daily Express.
After completing a Master's degree in Liberal Arts, majoring in English Literature at the University of Bristol, Rhiannon gained a multimedia NCTJ at News Associates in London before embarking on a career as a journalist. Rhiannon's work experience includes writing in-depth features and news articles as well as ‘shoe leather reporting' - she has spent hours conducting interviews, vox-pops, and door knocks. She has also covered court cases at the crown and magistrates' courts as well as inquests, court martials and employment tribunals, during which she liaised the CPS and barristers, hence sparking her interest in the justice sector.
At the Bar Council, Rhiannon's role involves helping develop proactive and reactive media and communication strategies and initiatives to promote the organisation's policy positions and services, as well as creating content.

Rowan joined the Bar Council in June 2022 and assists on a variety of projects across the Policy Team. She holds an LLB (Hons) in Law from Royal Holloway University of London and an LLM in Human Rights Law (Distinction) from Queen Mary University of London. During her undergraduate studies, she worked as a legal research assistant and carer. Prior to joining the Bar Council, Rowan volunteered with the human rights charity Prisoners of Conscience. Sally joined the Bar Council in May 2022 from the British Veterinary Association where she was Director of Policy, Media and Strategy for eight years. Sally has communications and campaigning experience across the membership, charity, and not-for-profit sectors. She previously worked for a criminal justice charity and has worked in national and local politics, after studying politics and parliamentary studies at the University of Leeds. She later completed the NCTJ certificate in newspaper journalism.
At the Bar Council, Sally and her team are responsible for all external and internal communications, including media, marketing, social media, communications with the Bar, and the website. The communications team works across the organisation to promote the work of the policy and public affairs teams, and publicise the services, events, and resources for the Bar.

Sam joined the Bar Council in June 2013 and is responsible for the design and delivery of equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) support for the profession. This includes equality and diversity (E&D) training and good practice guidance, as well as the provision of direct advice and support to chambers and individuals (via helplines). Sam has been responsible for high-profile programmes, including the Wellbeing at the Bar website, the #IamtheBar campaign, the Bar Council's Leadership Programme, and she co-authored the Race Report (2021). Sam has a keen interest in modernising working practices at the Bar. With a team of four, her remit extents to wider corporate social responsibility (CSR) issues including education and careers outreach; sustainability and pro bono/volunteering, and the Bar Council's representation of the young and employed Bars.
Prior to joining the Bar Council, Sam setup and ran the leading diversity and inclusion charity on age and employment, and led the workplace division in Business in the Community. She is an award-winning communicator on diversity and inclusion issues and has worked on this agenda across a wide range of private and public sector organisations and charities (both in the UK and overseas). Sam Townend KC is Chair of the Bar 2024. Sam is a silk at Keating Chambers and practises in domestic and international construction, energy and professional negligence work. He is also a mediator and adjudicator, and a Bencher at Lincoln's Inn.
Sam was the co-chair of the Bar Council Legal Services Committee in 2022 and has chaired the Bar's Regulatory Review Working Group. He is a former member of the Young Barristers' Committee and Treasurer of the Free Representation Unit.

Sarah joined the Bar Council as Communications Manager in October 2021 after working for the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the UK and Ireland for more than a decade.
Sarah has authored a chapter of a book published by Routledge and entitled: Investigative Journalism (third edition), it explains her campaigning work on journalistic ethics and sets out some of the legal threats to investigative journalism in the UK.
Sarah's work experience includes various campaigns and communications strategies and projects, and she has been employed by five not-for-profit organisations, each focused on a different sector of society - the justice system, media industry, civil service, housing sector, and higher education.

Sarah Richardson, Head of Policy; Regulatory Affairs, Law Reform and Ethics
Sarah Richardson joined the Bar Council's international team in October 2007 where she managed international programmes. In this role she initiated the Bar Council's immigration sponsorship scheme as well as the international grant programme and Bar Council Training Scheme for Chinese lawyers. After five years she moved to a new role to manage the policy areas of Regulation and Law Reform. Ethics was added to her remit in 2019. In this role she is the executive to the Law Reform and Ethics Committee as well as the Direct Access Panel. She leads on regulatory policy matters that impact the Bar, responding to consultations from legal regulators as well as the Competition and Markets Authority. She is also the manager of the Ethical Enquiries Service and an ethics adviser.
Sarah studied Natural Science at Durham University before doing a Masters in Social Development Practice at University College London. During her time at the Bar Council she also completed a Graduate Diploma in Law with BPP and a short course in regulation at the London School of Economics. Her early career included working for a Commonwealth Education NGO where she managed programmes in Malawi, conducting research for an environmental NGO in Tanzania and teaching English for the British Council in Chile. She has also worked for the City of London Magistrates' Court and interned with international children's and women's rights NGOs.

Stuart joined the Bar Council in 2019 and has been in the legal sector since the beginning of his career. He has worked in research, events, policymaking, and stakeholder relations. Previously he worked for a publishing house specialising in legal reporting, where he developed and managed the company's first team of Content Editors. He has produced and hosted events across the world in four continents.
Stuart's work at the Bar Council focuses on policymaking and support for barristers who are starting out in their careers and barristers in employed practice. He leads on policy, campaigns, and events for these areas of the profession and is also engaged more widely on access to justice issues, the rule of law, and the sustainability of the Bar. Projects he has contributed to during his time at the Bar Council include a proposal for the recovery of the criminal justice system following the Covid-19 pandemic, campaigns for greater justice funding via submissions to HM Government, and information security compliance materials for barristers and solicitors. Stuart is also an Ethical Advisor on the Ethical Enquiries Service.
