The African American Workers Union began in the later 1980's as a nonprofit civic organization striving for the economic and social uplifting of African-Americans. Over the years we had many successes, especially in the employment arena. Through our efforts, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation hired additional African-American administrators, supervisors, highway workers, clerks and other technicians. Our negotiations with the Pittsburgh Board of Education resulted in the promotion of the first African-American plumber supervisor in their history. Our deliberations with the University of Pittsburgh accomplished the promotion of the first African-American painter supervisor.
