In the beginning of "the internet", data lines were less powerful than today and people started to call the WWW "World wide wait". The first proxy server came on the market and the idea was born to found a proxy network. My manager agreed to my request to participate in the creation and in coordination with some more german universities we started the project. We emphasized the use of the proxy by deploying configuration scripts for the web browser and limiting access to port 80. This resulted in a major improvement of the www access for our customers. As with several other projects I used Solaris for the proxy and the network configuration was applied on a Cisco.
