My job is to lead the Union's staff team and ensure that the whole organisation is run efficiently and to the best possible benefit of all Surrey students. I've worked in a variety of staff roles across students' unions since 2001 with roles at Bournemouth, Imperial College London and UCL. I joined Surrey Students' Union in July 2022. 3 Priorities for the Year Making improvements to the Union building and working with University Estates to develop a masterplan to develop the Union building with a series of projects over the coming years. Develop the new Union strategy, working with students and stakeholders to shape the direction of the Union. Work with the Union President on the Union's new governance structure. She is an experienced commercial Company Secretary and director, with a strategic and listed company background. Amanda has spent over 24 years advising directors, particularly the Chairman and independent directors, on governance and board matters, and advising Audit, Remuneration and Nomination Committees, as well as holding executive roles on management boards and leadership teams, and managing various support areas. If you had advice to a new student what would it be? Go easy on yourself as you're adjusting to uni life! There are so many changes happening, it can be a really exciting time but also presents difficulties for many people. There are many different places to access support on campus or in the community, but also reach out to those around you - many people struggle with loneliness in university, and I found acknowledging it with friends to be really helpful - it also brought us closer together!

A lot of new students can be shy about approaching someone if they're experiencing a problem, but the Students' Union, the Centre for Wellbeing, the Disability and Neurodiversity team as well as many other services on campus are all very welcoming and are great at supporting students who may be having a hard time. I'm from Brazil so I came to Surrey as an international student. I'm involved at the University through multiple roles like Course Rep, Peer Support and Student Ambassador. I'm also a part of multiple societies including Disney Soc, The Stag, Pet Soc, Lit Soc, SAM Soc, etc. I think Surrey is a great place to build a home, so I want to make sure other students get to have the same amazing experience I've been having. Especially Surrey Volunteering. In terms of the Voice Zone, I want to improve the Course Rep scheme by introducing more frequent socials and highlighting course rep achievements to raise awareness of how student feedback is being acted upon. Finally, I want to create opportunities for further interactions between Placement returnees and second year students. This could be socials or workshops where they can share experiences and wisdom. My Favourite Surrey Students Union Event I always have a great time during Bingo Lingo because it's super fun and creative with the ridiculous prizes. If you had advice to a new student what would it be? Starting University can be stressful and overwhelming, but at Surrey there's always support for whatever you may need. Don't hesitate to reach out to all of our amazing services, including the HIVE, Peer Support and the centre of Well-being.

Martine Carter

Martine became a Trustee in October 2019. As the University Trustee she was nominated by the Chair of the University Council, having worked for the University in a number of roles since 2011. Martine's current role in the University involves facilitating the annual and strategic planning processes - working with the Board on how it distributes its resources against the many competing priorities. She is also responsible for overseeing risk, monitoring performance, and providing high quality data and information to support decision making, including what students say in surveys and in MEQs. In 2017 Martine completed an MBA part time in the Surrey Business School so has first hand experience of being a student here too. Before joining Surrey she worked at the Universities of Bristol and Southampton and in the voluntary sector.

Matt has lived in and around the Guildford area for 20 years, having finished his A-Levels in Farnborough 6th Form in 1993. Matt has spent the last 10 years doing a degree in Computing, IT and Business and achieved a 2:1 in 2018. Matt has worked in a number of industries, but primarily in Insurance and Government. While attempting to gain a degree with the Open university, he has had to balance work and study as both a remote and a part-time student. It was great being able to speak to new people everyday during the campaigning period and it was awesome having people I have never met come up and say that they supported me! Question Time was a particular highlight of SurreyDecides, it put me out of my comfort zone having to talk on stage about my ideas knowing that there was a audience and it was being live-streamed on YouTube. If you had advice to a new student what would it be? My advice would be to make the most of the opportunities given to you in the first few weeks. Attending events and joining societies is the best way to make friends when you're in a new environment like university.

Anne was the MP for Guildford from 2005 - 2019, and was Minister of State at the Department for Education from 12 June 2017 to 23 July 2019. Anne was appointed to the Health Select Committee, serving until December 2006, following her appointment as Shadow Minister for Tourism. In summer 2007 David Cameron appointed her Shadow Minister for Health. Between 2010 and 2012 she served as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State (Public Health), Department of Health and was appointed to the government as a whip with responsibility for HM Treasury and HM Household. Anne trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew's Hospital in London and worked for the NHS for 25 years, as a district nurse and for people requiring palliative care.
