On March 1st, 2016, the Alachua County Commission held a special meeting to consider a proposal from the Plum Creek Timber Company to convert 11,000 acres of rural property - wetlands, floodplains, small farms and rural communities - into 10,500 homes and 14 million square feet of commercial and industrial space.
