Many students when first learning to fire a traditionally configured, or "L" shaped, semi-automatic pistol have great difficulty locking the reciprocating slide back into its open position; and loading cartridges into a removable magazine. This can be frustrating and discouraging. A solution to this common problem was inspired by a T-handled screw driver which suggested using the thumb to press a trigger button rather than the index finger to pull a trigger. Thus was born the Palm Pistol®, the world's first production handgun specifically designed for the disabled and others with limited hand strength or manual dexterity. This was followed by the Palm Carbine™, a 16 inch long arm version, for competitive target shooting, small game hunting and plinking. The ATF has classified the Palm Pistol® as a "standard pistol" under the Gun Control Act and not AOW (Any Other Weapon) under the National Firearms Act.
