Starch is a major ingredient in paper manufacturing. Its proper application offers benefits for paper machine runnability and paper quality. But because starch is so commonly used, it is often viewed and treated as a simple commodity. Unfortunately, if starch is not prepared, handled and applied optimally, much of the economic and performance benefit will be diminished, or worse, contribute to degraded performance... "We are here to make paper, not chemical soup." These are the memorable words from an exasperated paper maker on my first ever wet end starch trial over 35 years ago. And they still ring true to this day. Mis-use (usually over-use) of cationic wet end starch is one of the most common and persistent causes for deficient machine performance and marginal paper quality.
