Prominently bearing the declaration of Duty, Honor, Country that motivates citizen service during periods of great national peril, the Southwestern Pennsylvania World War II Memorial is both an outdoor museum and a significant public art installation along Pittsburgh's North Shore. Design Workshop and The Studio of Larry Kirkland, in collaboration with over thirteen other design consultants, designed the memorial commemorating the achievements and sacrifices recorded by area residents throughout that conflict. The memorial is a belated tribute to the citizens of the region and remedying its absence was nothing short of a sacred mission. A simple ellipse creates a cathedral-like setting for remembrance and reflection of the local and national war stories and imagery. Steel, glass and stone highlights the region's rich mineral and manufacturing resources that helped win the war. Appropriately, this memorial extends the legacy of local public art within the Great Lawn Park immediately..
