Dr. Klára Hilscherová

Job Titles:
  • Associate Professor at the RECETOX
  • Principal Investigators
Klára Hilscherová is an associate professor at the RECETOX research center at Masaryk University and the head of the Bioanalytical Toxicology research group. She received her Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry and habilitated in Ecotoxicology at the RECETOX Centre of Masaryk University in 2016. During her Ph.D. studies, she studied for two years at the National Center for Food Safety and Toxicology at Michigan State University, USA. And she also worked as a postdoctoral researcher for two years after completing her Ph.D. She has been involved in several international and national basis and applied research projects. And currently, Klára Hilscherová is the principal investigator for Masaryk University on the EU H2020 ERGO project and the EXPRO Basic Research Excellence Grant Project and co-investigator on other European projects. She is a member of the OECD International Expert Group on Methods for Detection of Thyroid Disruption, NORMAN Association (working groups Biotests and Biomarkers in Water Monitoring and Effect-Driven Analysis for Identification of Hazardous Substances), Society for Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) and Society of Toxicology (SOT). Her research focuses primarily on the ability of substances to disrupt hormone regulation (endocrine disruption) and the associated risks to human health and the environment. She has broad experience in mechanistic and aquatic toxicology of pollutants and their mixtures, the development of biodetection tools, and in vitro systems for the characterization of toxic properties of substances or complex environmental samples, especially their ability to cause endocrine disruption. Her research group develops and optimizes innovative approaches for the study of toxic properties of substances, for risk assessment of chemical mixtures, and for identifying substances responsible for the detected effects. She is working on the characterization and potential use of harmful effect pathways and biomarkers mainly related to endocrine disruption and the effects of substances produced by aquatic cyanobacterial blooms. Klára Hilscherová has published over 165 ISI WoS articles that have received over 6000 citations (h-index 45) and over 200 conference presentations, including 14 invited talks, 5 book chapters. As a supervisor, she regularly supervises undergraduate, MSc, and Ph.D. students and has supervised over 20 Ph.D. students.
