Denise Saulnier

Denise was born in 1952 in the French-Acadian region of Clare in southwestern Nova Scotia. An early adopter of computer desktop publishing, her work was featured in the international marketing literature for Pagemaker software (a precursor of Adobe), and she was invited to speak at the Pratt Conference on Computer Graphics in New York City.

A leading exponent and proponent of Swiss graphic design and the International Style, Fritz Gottschalk lives and works in Zurich, the city where he was born in 1937. After attending primary and secondary schools in Zurich 1944-54, Fritz apprenticed as a typographic designer with Orell Füssli Grafische Betriebe AG Zurich and later at School of … Continued Fritz Gottschalk spent the 1990s in an energetic period of design and advocacy, creating symbols for Ice Hockey World Championship, a new outdoor advertising concept for the city of Zurich, and as a member of the Board of Directors at Graphis Publishing. G+A's work was recognized in exhibitions in Frankfurt ("The World of Graphic Design"), Montréal and Toronto (G+A Retrospective), and Zurich (Coninx-Museum). Fritz keynoted the SEGD meeting in Seattle in 1994, and began an association as annual juror for the FAW, Frankfurt. He also participated in an AGI seminar in Beijing in 1995. Since the year 2000, Gottschalk has occupied himself with encouraging the next generation of G+A's professional evolution, acting as senior denizen of the firm in Zurich, occupying a singular and iconic place in the world design community. In 2004 he delivered a lecture series at the Institut Krakau entitled "Designing Modernity." In 2006 he was a Founding member of DACH (Design Archive Switzerland). In the course of his career, he's received over 100 awards at various international design competitions. In 2011 Fritz Gottschalk received a Lifetime Achievement Award from Graphic Design Canada, in recognition of extraordinary work celebrating the highest principles of Swiss design.

He is co-founder of Hulse & Durrell, a Canadian-based design studio developing brands, products, and films for purpose-driven organizations that want to make a lasting impact. Durrell began his career at 16 years old designing websites. In 2001, he was hired full-time as a designer/art director at War Child Canada, a non-profit organization helping war-affected children around the world. It was working here that Durrell learned his skills and passion for design could be used to help make this world a better place. In 2007, Durrell joined the design team for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games. This small team of six, led by Leo Obstbaum, was responsible for all design deliverables for the Games, including the field of play, medals, podium, mascots, the Olympic torch, publications, and much more. Post-2010, Durrell teamed up with Vancouver 2010 colleague, Ben Hulse. In 2011, one of their first jobs was to lead a comprehensive (and ultimately award-winning) rebrand of the Canadian Olympic Team. Since then, Hulse & Durrell has been providing strategy and design across foundational identities, campaigns, digital channels, and licensed merchandise for dozens of national and international sports organizations - including Skate Canada, Canada Snowboard, U Sports and the International Olympic Committee to name a few. Over the years, Durrell has developed deep expertise in Canada's history of design. In 2018, he directed a feature-length documentary, Design Canada, which looks at how a group of European-immigrant designers reshaped the identity of Canada in the 1960s. The film toured around the world with sold-out shows across Canada and international screenings in New York City, Zurich, and Moscow. Design Canada debuted at #1 on iTunes in the documentary category and was licensed by CBC to air on national television. Most recently, in 2021, Durrell led the rebrand of Mountain Equipment Company, a beloved Canadian outdoor retailer. His pacifist father, John Jacob Peters, was born in post-revolutionary Russia in 1920 (during … Continued From 2001 to 2005, Robert also served as official liaison between Icograda and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) as well as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). From 2002 to 2006 Robert served as editor of the GDC's ‘Graphic Design Journal.' He has also written numerous design articles, reviews, and opinion pieces for numerous international publications including HOW, Applied Arts, Print, the AIGA Journal, NOC (Japan), Package & Design (China), and Who's Who In Graphic Design (Switzerland). During his two-year presidency of Icograda (2001 to 2003), Robert wrote quarterly editorials for the international journal ‘BoardMessage.' Robert joined the board of the international humanitarian organization Design for the World (DW, headquartered in Barcelona) in 2000 and was appointed as a Vice President in 2002; in 2004 he was named an Honorary Lifetime Member of the Brno Biennale Association (Czech Republic); and he was a member of the founding executive of the International Design Alliance (IDA) from 2003 to 2005. Robert now serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the Design Innovation Institute (Dii), has served as an advisor to Applied Arts magazine, and served as a founding member of the editorial advisory group of ‘Geez' magazine. In 2005, Robert authored the book ‘Worldwide Identity: Inspired Design from Forty Countries' (ISBN 1-59253-187-3) published by Rockport in partnership with Icograda, and compiled/designed at CIRCLE. The book showcases over 300 identities from 40 Icograda member countries around the globe; it has been called "a stimulating source of inspiration, reflection, and learning - an international snapshot of excellence in identity design." In 2006, Robert was the recipient of the (University of Hartford) Hartford Art School's Georgette and Richard Koopman Distinguished Chair in Visual Arts. As a part of this assignment he taught a studio course in the Visual Communication Design Department titled "Cause an Effect" consisting of topical modules relating to globalism and cross-cultural issues. One of the student projects arising from this engagement was the "Migrant Immigrant eXchange 2006" (MIX06) cultural exchange project undertaken along with students of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia with the aim of encouraging contemporary discourse between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous designers/collaborators in Australia and the USA (in recognition and respect of both First Nation and Aboriginal culture). Later in 2006, Robert spent four weeks in Melbourne as Designer in Residence at Monash University, with a focus being the preparation and launch of the traveling exhibition "MIX06: One Step Back, Two Steps Forward." In 2007 and 2008, Robert served as External Moderator to graduating students at the Wanganui School of Design in Wanganui, New Zealand.
