The City of Cape Town has renamed a colonial edifice built by slaves more than 200 years ago, Desmond & Leah Tutu House. The building, previously known as The Old Granary, in Buitenkant Street, has served as a magistrate's court, women's prison and public works office, besides as a grain store. Ten years ago, the building was refurbished and handed over by the city to Archbishop and Mrs Tutu to house their legacy work. It houses a permanent exhibition and two organisations: The Desmond & Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation, and the Archbishop Tutu IP Trust. The new nameplate for the building was officially unveiled by Mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis today, at a function attended by Mrs Tutu. The gathering was addressed by Dr Mamphela Ramphele, chair of the IP Trust, who described the mayor as a co-conspirator in the quest to keep memory of the Archbishop, and his teaching, alive...
