ALAN CLARKE - CEO, Secretary

Alix Ritchie

Job Titles:

I am responsible for delivering education to pupils about eating red meat as part of a healthy, balanced diet. I work closely with our partners to ensure that the key red meat messages about health and the environment are communicated throughout the food education network. I previously worked as a Project Coordinator with the Royal Highland Education Trust (RHET) and work on our family hill farm in Perthshire.

Allan Ward

Andy McGowan

Job Titles:
  • Chief Executive of Scottish Pig Producers
Andy McGowan is the Chief Executive of Scottish Pig Producers, the pig marketing cooperative that plays a pivotal role in developing the pigmeat supply chain in Scotland and Northern Ireland. He was the Head of Industry Development at QMS from 2002 until 2013 and has also worked in food and livestock genetics companies across Europe and Asia. Mr McGowan is currently the Vice President of the Scottish Association of Meat Wholesalers and sits on the board of the Scottish Agricultural Organisation Society, scoteid.com Ltd, Wholesale Pigs (Scotland) Ltd and Pig Regen Ltd.

Ann Irvine

Ann Irvine is currently a board member of University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) Perth College, was brought up on a mixed farm in Northern Ireland. For the past 21 years she has been farming with her husband in North East Scotland and helping the public to better understand where their food comes from. Her professional career spans thirty years in local government and further and higher education.

Frances Hamilton

I am part of the Consumer Marketing team, and responsible for the digital marketing activity behind the Scotch Beef PGI, Scotch Lamb PGI and Specially Selected Pork brands.

George Milne

George Milne is a sheep farmer in Fife with practical knowledge of breeding livestock. He is also a Development Officer for the NSA Scottish Region.

Gordon Newlands

I manage the Scotch Butchers Clubs and Scotch Beef Clubs. I have regular contact with the processors in Scotland to aid the export market. I provide support to Butchers and Beef club members, identifying opportunities in retail and foodservice to grow the three brands, liasing with key stakeholders across the industry. Promotional activity of both clubs including social media and website activity.

Gordon Wallace

Gordon Wallace is a butcher with over 30 years senior management experience ranging from volume carcass processing to meat product manufacturing. Mr Wallace is a part-time lecturer at the City of Glasgow College and freelance assessor/trainer principally with Scottish Meat Training. Gordon has a master's degree in educational studies (M.Ed.), from Glasgow University and is a former chair of East Renfrewshire Council's audit and scrutiny committee.

Iain Macdonald

It is my job to ensure that the market prices and graphs on the QMS website are maintained. I also update our price and supply datasets and use this information to write market reports on a weekly and monthly basis. In addition, I support other members of the QMS team and external stakeholders with market information and analysis. Each year I produce the Red Meat Industry Profile.

Jennifer Robertson

As a registered dietitian, I am responsible for many of the nutrition and health related issues concerning QMS and the red meat industry. Much of my time is spent visiting schools, educating pupils about eating red meat as part of a healthy balanced diet. I also work with the teams in QMS on projects with a nutrition or health focus.

Jock Gibson

Jock Gibson runs his family Butchers Macbeth's in Forres concentrating on marketing and promotion, particularly for the mail order business. He is customer facing and passionate about the butchery sector and is also involved in the family beef hill farm where they breed Highland, Shorthorn and Aberdeen Angus cross cattle.

Kate Rowell is a fifth generation farmer running the 750 hectare Hundleshope farm on the Haystoun Estate, where the family have been tenants for 150 years. She runs the hill unit near Peebles with her husband Ed and their four children.

Kathryn Kerr

My role is to lead the strategy and operational development of our Brands Integrity department. The function of the department is to provide quality assurance throughout the red meat supply chain to more than 10,000 members.

Lesley Cameron

My role involves leading on the planning, delivery and evaluation of all marketing and communications activities and wider corporate and industry communications, undertaken by the Marketing & Comms team. My remit also covers QMS's health & education activity and communicating the work of our industry development and economic services teams. Issues management is another key aspect of the role.

Lesley Mitchell

My role as Quality Assurance Specialist is to develop and deliver Brands Integrity projects, ensure high levels of customer service for Quality Assurance (QA) scheme members and develop strong relationships within the red meat supply chain.

Louise Welsh

After a lengthy career in journalism, including 10 years at BBC Scotland, Louise was Head of Communications at QMS and helped establish its work in health and education. She has over 10 years' experience of working in the food industry.

Maria Burton

As the QMS Office Assistant, I am the first point of contact for all general enquiries. I assist the Corporate Services Team with the day-to-day running of the office and provide additional support to different departments with administration tasks, event planning and preparation for meetings.

Philip Sleigh

Philip Sleigh has farmed in Aberdeenshire for over 30 years. Although he has experience of cattle and sheep management, his main focus is a sow herd and finishing all progeny. He is a Director of Scottish Pig Producers Ltd.

Sarah Mackie

Sarah Mackie is a partner in her family farm in Aberdeenshire and also runs a freelance business specialising in the procurement of Scottish food and drink to a portfolio of non-competing businesses. She is a Nuffield Farming Scholar and former Head of Local Sourcing with Tesco UK.

Sarah Millar

Scott Henderson

Scott Henderson graduated with an agriculture degree in 1975, and since then has worked on the family farm on the outskirts of Dumfries. He has built up the business with his brother and they now run a herd of 450 beef cows and a 450 ewe flock with the help of their two sons. Their main enterprise, however, is finishing around 1800 cattle annually. Scott is a member of the QMS Cattle and Sheep Standards Committee and is a former Chair of the Scottish Beef Association.

Stuart Ashworth

I lead the economics team working on policy impact analysis and providing market information and other data to help businesses plan for the future. In particular we monitor developments in CAP, world trade, and climate change policies as well as looking at future supply patterns and providing enterprise information from which producers can benchmark their businesses.
