Alf Daines

Job Titles:
  • Chartered Structural Engineer
Alf Daines, a Chartered Structural Engineer with experience from the pre-cast concrete industry, and developed quickly in the 1970s as the only Consulting Engineer in Carlisle. A number of large commercial projects in North Cumbria soon established the practice as a leading consultancy in the region.

Ernest Shimmin

Ernest Shimmin was brought up in Cumbria, studied Agricultural Engineering at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and, after a couple of years as a VSO in Kenya, served his time with a steelwork engineering company before joining A L Daines and Partners. After a second stint in Tanzania, he then went into local government, becoming chartered as a principal engineer at Carlisle City and Cumbria County Council before returning to join the practice in 2003.

Mike Briggs

Mike Briggs has over 34 years engineering experience that has included the feasibility, design, contract administration and project management of a wide variety of civil and structural engineering projects. After an early career in local authority bridge engineering Mike then joined Capita Symonds and moved in to project management, providing leadership and direction to specialist highways teams. Mike joined AL Daines in 2012 and has been involved in a wide range of schemes providing all aspects of design and project administration. These have included designs in steelwork, concrete and timber, from large industrial buildings to small residential extensions.

Stewart Marshall

Stewart, born and brought up in Penrith, began his career as an AMEY Graduate Engineer on the Civil Examination Framework Agreement (CEFA) with Network Rail in Manchester. He gained £2billion railway management and maintenance experience carrying out scheduled and emergency inspections on existing railway structures throughout the North West. He joined A L Daines & Partners LLP in 2011 and is involved in all aspects of civil & structural design and project administration. Stewart is a qualified Chartered Civil Engineer with the Institution of Civil Engineers.
