Alexander Tweedy is a specialist in African and Oceanic Art for Lyon & Turnbull. He also specialises in Antiquities and Natural History. Having lived and travelled widely in west & central Africa and the South Pacific for a number of years, Alex developed a passion for the traditional art of these regions. It was then that he began to handle, buy and sell objects from all over the globe. Upon returning to the UK Alex graduated from the University of Nottingham with a first in Archaeology (BA). Prior to joining Lyon & Turnbull he worked with the internationally renowned dealers ArtAncient and Clive Loveless. Alex is a member of the Antiquaries Society of Scotland and the Antiquities Dealers Association.

Cathy Marsden is a specialist in the Rare Books, Manuscripts & Maps department. She also specialises in 19th and 20th century photography. Cathy looks after all aspects of our regular specialist Rare Books, Maps & Manuscripts auctions and is the main point of contact for any queries either about buying and selling at auction. Cathy joined Lyon & Turnbull in 2012 as a book specialist, following the completion of a postgraduate diploma in Museum Studies and an undergraduate degree in Art History and German from the University of St Andrews. In the past, she has worked with several heritage organisations and museums, including Osterley Park and the Geffrye Museum in London.

Charlotte Riordan

Charlotte Riordan is the Head of Sale for Contemporary & Post-War Art and a specialist in Scottish art, including the work of the Colourists, as well as Modern British and European paintings. A History of Art graduate from the University of Glasgow, Charlotte specialised in inter-war European art and the British public art movement of the 1970s. Charlotte began her career at the Fine Art Society in Edinburgh, where over several years she gained an in depth knowledge of Scottish art and continued to develop a passion for contemporary art. Having made the move to Lyon & Turnbull in 2012, Charlotte is now an Associate Director and Head of Sale for Contemporary & Post-War Art, as well as developing and assisting with the running of our Modern Made auctions in London. She is also responsible for research and academic catalogue entries. She regularly presents art historical talks and lectures and helps orchestrate charity auctions which often feature in the Lyon & Turnbull. In her spare time, Charlotte spent several years as the co-curator of the art programme for Edinburgh's Hidden Door Festival; an annual showcase of young artistic talent. In 2018 Charlotte was delighted to be invited to appear as a re-occurring regular paintings specialist on the Antiques Roadshow where she enjoys breaking the (hopefully good!) news to the public about the value of their artwork.

Colin Fraser, consultant specialist in Silver, Coins & Medals and Arms & Armour. With a specialist focus on Scottish Silver & Accessories, becoming one world-renowned in this field over the last few years. His interest and focus for all things Scottish encompasses the national spirit, Whisky. A true collectors medium it has taken on new heights in value in recent years and this exciting new department for Lyon & Turnbull lead by Colin will aim to showcase the sales of whisky in a new light and to new audiences. Having worked predominantly with silver and items of Scottish connection Colin has been with Lyon & Turnbull since 2005. Working within the company, he has been involved in the dispersal of many important items and collections and create the market leading sales in ‘Scottish Silver & Accessories' and ‘Jacobite and Stuart Works of Art'. A member of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and the Incorporation of Goldsmiths of the City of Edinburgh his personal passion is with Scottish silver and related accessories, "the context and history which these objects portray is enviable the world over, and such a rich history for a small country we should be proud of the footprint in craft we have left behind". Colin has worked closely with many private collectors and institutions and has been involved in various recent exhibitions and publications, including Aberdeen Art Gallery & Museums Silver the Aberdeen Story and the National Museums of Scotland Silver: Made in Scotland.

Gavin Strang - Managing Director

After graduating with an M. Phil. in Decorative Arts from Glasgow University in 1996, followed by an internship with the Victoria & Albert Museum, Gavin started his auction career in Christie's Furniture & Works of Art Department. He later became both a carpet specialist and a general valuer with the firm. Gavin joined the Lyon & Turnbull team as a general valuer in 2002, looking after valuations for sale, inheritance tax (probate), tax & estate planning and insurance purposes. Now Managing Director and senior auctioneer with an all-round knowledge of art and antiques, Gavin has been responsible for the orchestration and smooth running of a great number of Lyon & Turnbull's very successful single owner collection sales. Gavin is on the committee of the Society of Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland and regularly sits on the HMRC Chattels Fiscal Forum. Gavin is also Lyon & Turnbull's tapestries, rugs & carpets specialist, with over twenty years' experience in the field and a wealth of international contacts.

John Batty

John Batty is a consultant specialist in antique arms and armour for Lyon & Turnbull. He also specialises in sporting guns. John is a respected specialist in the field of Sporting and Arms & Armour with over 35 years' experience, joining Lyon & Turnbull as a consultant specialist in 2001. He curated the arms and armour collections at the National Trust for Scotland for over 30 years and has, in more recent years, been the inspiration behind the revitalised Museum for the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards at Edinburgh Castle. More recently, and to great acclaim, he became the curator of Arms & Armour for the Lobkowicz Collection of Firearms, a Czech collection housed in the Armoury of Prague Castle and the Prince's gun room at Nelahozeves Castle. John brings with him, as well as a lifelong experience in the field, connections in the U.S.A., the Indian sub-continent and Eastern Europe, the latter two becoming a growing force in the Sporting and Arms & Armour marketplace over the last decade.

Kristina Sanne is one of the foremost Islamic Art specialists in the UK and we are proud to say she joined as a consultant specialist in 2018. Kristina has specialised in Islamic Art since receiving her degree in History of Art. Nick Curnow is the head of our Fine Art departments and joint Vice Chairman of the company. Specialising in Scottish Art, including the work of the Scottish Colourists, and British & European Paintings. With over thirty five years' experience in the field he is one of the leading Fine Art specialists in the UK. Nick has led Lyon & Turnbull through remarkable growth since he co-established the company in 1999, following his position as a mainboard director of Philips Auctioneers whom he joined in 1974. Lyon & Turnbull is now one of the UK's leading auction houses, the largest outside London. With forty years' experience in the field, he is a renowned authority on Scottish art, specialising in the work of the Scottish Colourists and Glasgow Boys. Nick's seniority within the firm and length of experience in the field are unmatched elsewhere. He has overseen the sale of multiple significant art collections, with highlights including the ‘white glove' sale of the Drambuie Collection, which at the time established fifteen new sales records. Thanks to his extensive client network, Nick has also successfully brokered a number of significant private treaty sales to both private and public collections. One of Nick's favourite roles as a specialist is to guide his clients in the creation of quality art collections. He is also an experienced auctioneer, taking the major paintings sales throughout the year and also regularly gives talks on the state of the art market. Nick graduated from The University of East Anglia with Honours in the History of Art, specialising in European painting 1840-1940.

Paul Roberts

Paul Roberts, Vice-Chairman of Lyon & Turnbull and President of Freeman's of Philadelphia, specialises in Collections & House Sales as well as directing the business development team. Paul has nearly forty years' experience. Following graduating with a degree in History and Politics in the early 1970's he worked for short periods both in the Civil Service and the world of antiquarian books in Hay on Wye before becoming an auctioneer. Initially in charge of a small auction house in Cheshire, Peter Wilson and Co, before joining the London auctioneers Phillips, at the time the third largest auction house in the world. Over the following nineteen years Paul became a Director of their Scottish operation then a Regional Director in charge of six northern sale rooms and a number of offices. In the 1990s he became Head of Marketing and latterly moved to the US to head their New York operation. During his time at Phillips he was involved with the sale of many corporate and private collections In 1999 Paul left Phillips and along with four fellow Scottish Directors, under the chairmanship of Sir Angus Grossart, helped regenerate Lyon & Turnbull in the role of Vice-Chairman. Concurrently, he was also appointed as President of Freeman's of Philadelphia. He now divides his time between the UK and North East America.

Philip Smith is an auctioneer and specialist in 20th Century Design and Modern & Post-War British Art, heading up these departments for Lyon & Turnbull in the South of England. After graduating with a Masters from the Courtauld Institute in 2007, Philip has over 10 years' experience within the auction industry, beginning his career at a leading provincial auctioneers in the South of England, leading both the Design department and Modern & Post-War Art department nationally. Within this time he developed sales that were considered to be some of the leading sales in the country within these fields and was particularly known as a leading specialist in studio & contemporary ceramics, post-war art and artist's studio sales. Philip is a trustee of Court Barn Museum, the Guild of Handicraft Museum, in Chipping Campden which includes curating and organising exhibitions for the Museum, and he has lately been involved in Design: Head, Hand, Heart in 2018, an exhibition devoted to nine leading contemporary designers who follow the rich heritage of architect and designer Charles Robert Ashbee. Philip has regularly contributed to a number of publications including Ceramic Review, contributed to articles in The Times and The Telegraph, and has given lectures on the changing nature of Studio Ceramics reception in the art world at the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford and Arts & Crafts Jewellery at Court Barn.
