Andrew leads projects for Andrew Black Design. He has over 14 years' experience in private and public-sector, residential, student accommodation and commercial projects, and regularly works with corporate client teams. He works closely with clients and consultants to develop the initial brief through to detailed technical design, ensuring that attention to detail is maintained and the key client objectives are met. He has worked on a range of projects from small scale (£0.25M) to larger scale (£48M) across Scotland and England. He has taken projects from initial brief through to planning stage and secured planning approval with a range of local authorities. He is also experienced in working with private and local authority building control to ensure projects comply with the local building regulations. He has worked both on traditional and design and build projects. Relevant experience include affordable housing projects (e.g. Garsube Road (£11M), Meadow Road (£2.2M), student accommodation (e.g. Arena Point (£45M), Altus House (£48M), Bentley House (£24M)), retail units and secondary schools. He is currently working on a range of private houses and also several projects for the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association. We are registered with and regulated by both The Architects Registration Board (ARB) and The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS). Locally, we are also proud to participate in the Dundee Institute of Architects (DIA) Continuing Professional Development lectures, regularly participating in CPD as part of our commitment to ongoing staff development.

Hans leads projects for Andrew Black Design. He has over 20 years' experience in private and public-sector education, residential and commercial projects, and regularly works with corporate client teams. He manages client expectations within the client's project priorities, design teams, and construction projects on site. His approach is collaborative yet assertive, and his interpersonal skills ensure projects can be supported by all stakeholders, and delivered to the satisfaction of our clients. With a Master's Degree in the design of zero-carbon and ultra-low energy buildings he has the skills to deliver projects, which maximise client value by creating buildings that are easy to maintain and run, and sustainable both environmentally, and in terms of cost. Hans is skilled at establishing a clear brief for the project, taking account of project priorities including construction cost, programme and quality/client aspirations, and regularly consults stakeholders such as tenants or staff to ensure the project delivered fulfils the brief. His patient, persistent, systematic and diplomatic approach during the planning application process ensures that planning permission and listed building consent applications are processed effectively. Detailed knowledge of the Technical Standards ensure that projects comply with the building regulations, and keep negotiations with building control officers during the Technical Design stage to a minimum. He has worked both on traditionally procured projects, as well as a consultant to the contractor in design and build projects. Relevant experience includes affordable housing, education projects for Angus Council, eg. Montrose Academy (Special Educational Needs Department, Airlie Primary School remodelling (£1.45M), Morrison's Academy, Crieff (new library and IT suite, and a new nursery), the High School of Dundee (analysis and reorganisation proposals), and Abertay University (sports facility £14M).
