Aissa Sabbagh Gomez

Aissa is a practicing registered architect. As alumna of the MSA, she specialises on socially and environmentally sustainable design that promotes happiness to improve quality of life outcomes. Amongst other commercial and public projects across the UK, Aissa was part of the Design Team to redevelop the Marylebone Road Courts, London's oldest functioning law court, into what is now the City of Westminster Magistrates' Courts. As the founder of BlueAvenues, she is currently delivering a house for life project to PassiveHaus standards. Aissa is a PhD Researcher for the Liveable Cities Project at Lancaster University. Her research focuses on spatial justice and neighbourhood design that promotes wellbeing, social equity and positive interactions between diverse groups.

Albena Yaneva

Albena Yaneva is Professor of Architectural Theory at the University of Manchester. She has been Visiting Professor at Princeton School of Architecture and Parsons School of Design. In 2017 she was awarded the Lise Meitner Visiting Chair in Architecture at Lund University, Sweden. After a PhD in Sociology and Anthropology from Ecole Nationale Supérieure des mines de Paris (2001) with Professor Bruno Latour, Yaneva has worked at Harvard University, the Max-Planck Institite for the History of Science in Berlin and the Austrian Academy of Science in Vienna. Her research is intrinsically transdisciplinary and spans the boundaries of science studies, cognitive anthropology, architectural theory and political philosophy.

Alberto V. Yebenes

Alberto V Yebenes graduated as an Architect in the Technical School of Madrid in 2004, specialising in tectonics and structures. Completed a Post Graduate Degree in environmental urban design and ecology in 2006, worked in relevant historical and conservation projects in Spain such as the Royal Mint of Segovia, a XV Century mill converted into museum and cultural centre, San Francisco el Grande, and Beata Hospitals in Madrid. Involved in the academic field in Spain and England, Alberto worked as a tutor for the faculty of Alcala de Henares and joined the mentoring scheme between the RIBA and Manchester School of Architecture in 2015. Between 2017 and 2023 has held the position of tutor/ Associate Lecturer for the CIA unit, Manchester School of Architecture. In professional practice in the UK since 2014, joined Hodder and Partners where he was responsible for very relevant projects across the country like the RHS Garden in Worsley and Duncan House in London.

Aoife Rath-Cullimore

Aoife is an senior architect and masterplanner at Optimised Environments. She combines technical understanding of delivery with an appreciation of the broader urban, social and economic context. She has worked on a range of projects across sectors and scales with particular experience in residential-led mixed-use masterplanning, high density residential and Higher Education campus design. Before joining OPEN, Aoife had gained extensive experience at several international practices, most recently Mecanoo where she was an integral member of the Manchester studio working on projects such as the Manchester Engineering Campus Development (MECD) and the Kampus neighbourhood. In 2011 Aoife worked as an architectural assistant at SASAKI Associates in Boston working on a masterplan for the regeneration of Harvards campus. In 2012 Aoife joined Tim Flynn Architects' London office to work on a range of high-end residential development. Between 2013 and 2014, Aoife participated in a year-long design and build project for a childrens' home in Nakuru, Kenya. Alongside Aoife's role as a tutor and in architectural practice, she is a keen gardener and environmentalist. Aoife volunteers with Manchester Urban Diggers and is studying for a diploma in horticulture with the RHS in order to broaden her understanding of how nature and biodiversity can influence our cities, buildings and how we design for a sustainable future.

Bea Martin

Bea Martin is a qualified British architect, writer and artist, and a Senior Lecturer in Architecture. Bea is currently the Inscriptive Practices and Future Processes Lead. Prior joining the MSA, Bea taught at University of Huddersfield, where she is also the BA (Hons) Architecture (Part 1) programme leader, at Birmingham City University and University of California at Berkeley. As a practitioner, her technical and design experience in office, spans over fifteen years, working for a variety of architectural practices in London, such as Richard Rogers and Partners. She is also the founder of Speculative Assemblies, an experimental design lab exploring the visual construct in architecture. In her role as a visual theorist, the focus is on a conceptual investigation, digital and analogue, of the apparatus of drawing, the challenging boundary of drawing as a work of art, research that is both architectural and artistic but never an end in itself. Her work questions and reiterates the mission of drawing through continuous research, intense interrogation, and devotion to craft.

Becky Sobell

Becky Sobell is programme lead for the Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA) course. She joined the Manchester School of Architecture in 2009 and has worked across landscape architecture and architecture education at all levels. Becky is atelier lead for ‘Some Kind of Nature' MSA atelier. SKN attends to the entangled fate of organisms and engages with contemporary discourses and strategies around the climate crisis to acknowledge the impact of homo sapiens on the physical, chemical, and biological systems of the planet. Interdisciplinarity is at the core of SKN's pedagogy, and that collaborative ethos extends to more-than-human actors, redefining engagement with the environment as a multi-voiced or polyphonic narrative. In landscape architectural practice Becky worked in Liverpool with BCA Landscape on multiple national award-winning projects. She has experience as a horticulturist in the USA and the UK, and co-ran the not-for-profit nursery at Hulme Community Garden Centre in Manchester. She has a BA Hons. in linguistics from the University of Manchester, and a postgraduate degree in Landscape Architecture. She led ‘MSA Live', MSA's annual programme of collaborative student-led live projects, for 4 years between 2018 and 2021.

Ben Kelly

Designer Ben Kelly has worked on projects across the UK, Asia and Europe, and is best known for his work on the interior design on Manchester's legendary Hacienda nightclub, in addition to work for musical and artistic icons including The Sex Pistols, Factory Records and Vivienne Westwood. Work by Kelly is housed in the permanent collections of the V&A Museum and the British Council. Kelly's signature design elements - often described as post-industrial - include the use of International Orange and black and yellow stripes, which have been referenced by numerous designers and institutions, including Raf Simmons, Virgil Abloh and Yohji Yamamoto. Kelly continues to lead interior design practice Ben Kelly Design (BKD). He was appointed a Royal Designer for Industry (RDI) in 2007.

Christopher Maloney Master

Christopher Maloney is a Senior Lecturer at Manchester School of Architecture and Programme Leader for MArch. A Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, Christopher has over a decade of teaching experience. He was a member of the Association of Architecture Educators (AAE) steering committee, and has published and delivered conference talks on the subject of design pedagogy. A qualified architect, Christopher has 10 years professional practice experience, including as a self-employed designer. He has talked at national conferences about the changing role of the designer due to the disruption of the Information Age on the industry. Christopher was lead organiser of the 30th European Architecture Students Assembly (EASA) and was National Contact for the network for 5 years. He also founded the Architecture Student Network (ASN). Christopher Moir

Chris Moir is a tutor on MLA1 and concurrently works in practice as a senior landscape architect at Exterior Architecture. He is a chartered member of the Landscape Institute and has worked in practice for over seven years, leading on a range of projects, from private gardens to strategic masterplans. He primarily works on residential and commercial schemes, but has experience across all sectors. Chris is regularly involved in all of the stages of a landscape project, from defining the strategy to handover. Chris formerly worked at Optimised Environments (OPEN.) At OPEN, he was able to explore his interest in regeneration projects, which focus on investment in blue infrastructure. Prior to joining OPEN, Chris worked at TPM Landscape, where he developed a strong horticultural knowledge and understanding of the residential development process. Chris worked and studied in Copenhagen, moving back to the UK in 2016, As part of his master's degree at Copenhagen University, he worked as an intern at Lodewijk Baljon in Amsterdam. Chris' work at the university and in practice is imbued with the broad range of knowledge acquired from living and working abroad. Chris is most excited by projects which revitalise areas, whilst simultaneously providing solutions to global challenges.

Dan Dubowitz

Dan Dubowitz is Reader in Architecture and the International Lead for Manchester School of Architecture . He heads up he FLUX Atelier and is co-chair of the schools expert panel which delivers the ‘Provocations' series, inspirations talks, Atelier nights, and the salons programme. Trained as an architect, Dan worked for architectural and design practices in London and Hong Kong before joining Peter Eisenman Architects in New York. In 1996 he established the Masters in Advanced Architectural Design programme at Strathclyde University with Per Kartvedt and started the design practice, Heisenberg Collaborative Arts in Glasgow with Matt Baker.

Dawn Parke Master

Dawn is a senior lecturer in landscape architecture with a fundamental belief that Landscape Architecture must be driven by the pursuit of environmental justice and mitigating the impacts of climate change, loss of biodiversity and pollution. Her design career has traversed disciplines and scales from urban design, architecture, garden design and product design, between the public and private realm, to eventually grounding itself in landscape architecture. Her experience and understanding of our cognate disciplines drive her interest in collaborative working and interdisciplinary practice and teaching. She co-founded the following initiatives to support and drive these areas in education and practice: The Experimental Sustainability Studios, an extra-curricular initiate which aimed to boost climate skills and knowledge literacy through a series of interdisciplinary pop-up studios, think-tanks and seminars, often involving external stakeholders. Dawn was recognised as ‘sustainability champion' finalist, in the Green Gown awards (2021) for this impactful, on-going work. The Frameworks for Environmental Justice Colab Studio, a collaboration with Birmingham City Council and The Women's Dolphin Centre, a Birmingham based charity. This project explores the unequal distribution and access to environmental resources and healthy green space, the outcomes of which have supported Birmingham City Council Planners, towards embedding environmental justice in their developmental framework and planning guidelines. She is an Academic member of the Landscape Institute and was the sole academic member of the steering group supporting the development of a new competency framework and routes to chartership. With an emerging research profile in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD), she has been exploring graduate outcomes for ESD, methods for embedding sustainability in design education and considering the value of landscape architectural education in that discussion. After graduating from the Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture course at the University of Sheffield, I undertook PhD research under the supervision of Professor Peter Blundell Jones. My Doctoral thesis was a historical study of the plans drawn up for Sheffield's city centre between 1936 and 1952. In 2007, I started working as a Research Associate at the University of Sheffield on the EPSRC-funded project "EVOLVE - Design Evaluation of Older People's Extra-Care Housing: Development and Testing of an Evaluation Tool." I subsequently worked on the study "Extra-Care Housing for People with Sight Loss", funded by the Thomas Pocklington Trust, before moving to the University of Manchester in 2011 to work on the research project "Conditioning Demand", funded by the EPSRC and EDF. Since then I have completed a number of research projects, including "Daylighting in Older People's Housing" funded by Thomas Pocklington Trust (Principal Investigator), "The Mathematization of Daylighting" funded by the RIBA and Thomas Pocklington Trust (Principal Investigator), and "Care Provision Fit for a Future Climate funded by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (Co-investigator). More recently I worked on the AHRC-funded study, "Pathways, Practices and Architectures: Containing Antimicrobial Resistance in the Cystic Fibrosis Clinic (PARC)" (Co-investigator). I was appointed as Lecturer in Architecture at the University of Manchester in 2015.

Camilla Lewis is a lecturer in Architectural Studies at the University of Manchester and a member of the Manchester Architecture Research Group (MARG). Camilla completed a PhD in social anthropology at the University of Manchester in 2014. Her research centres on the themes of urban change, inequalities, ageing, housing, belonging and community with a strong methodological focus, spanning a variety of ethnographic, sensory as well as longitudinal approaches. Camilla's publications have provided theoretical analyses on the everyday experiences of inequalities in urban environments and also practical suggestions for how to tackle marginalisation in socially excluded groups. Prior to joining the architecture department, Camilla taught at Newcastle University and worked on various post-doctoral research roles at Manchester and Brunel. From 2018-2019 she led an ESRC-funded project entitled ‘The experience of 'ageing in place' over time: a longitudinal perspective'. Dr Chathu Jayakody

Dr Chathuranganee Jayakody (Chathu) is a lecturer in Architecture and urbanism at the Manchester School of Architecture (MSA). Her role includes teaching at the MA Architecture and Urbanism programme and supervising master's dissertations. Her research interest is in Urban planning and urban designing interventions for disaster resilience, Planning and designing Sustainable Public Open Spaces and Shared Spaces, addressing the needs of displaced communities and social cohesion through urban design. Before joining MSA, Chathu was a Senior Tutor in Planning and Environmental Management at the School of Environment Education and Development (SEED), University of Manchester. She was also a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Huddersfield and a research member at the Global Disaster Resilience Centre. Prior to her academic career, she worked at the Planning Control and Building Control department at Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council, UK. She was also involved in large-scale housing development projects under the sustainable township programme in Sri Lanka.

Dr Danilo Gomes

Danilo joined MSA in 2022 as part of the Technologies Team. Danilo worked in practice as a Lead Architect in Brazil for about ten years, where he delivered a diverse range of projects. His teaching focuses on the interdisciplinary nature of design and the importance of engaging into collaborative practices with other disciplines from very early stages. He has a personal interest in working at the bridge between design and construction, which have led him to play a key role trying to merge practice and academia. He previous led the BSc Architectural Technology programme and was the academic lead for Technologies in the architecture programme at University of Huddersfield. Over the last few years, he has worked to understand the challenges and find ways to improve collaborative practices of multidisciplinary teams. He designed strategies to enable and develop collaborative skills within undergraduate programmes in his previous institution. The success of such strategies has been recognised both by the academic team and employers, which have perceived the increase in awareness and ability in the students to work across traditional disciplinary boundaries. Danilo's research has also explored the principles and strategies for Modular Construction and Design for Manufacturing & Assembly (DfMA) through the development of design project briefs, design methodologies and digital fabrication techniques. Such research exploration was conducted in conjunction with PhD and Masters level supervisions. He is currently exploring ways to continue and expanding this research through industrial partnerships and further insights into robotics. His previous experience as programme leader in another institution have also involved the exploration of ways to introduce Lean Construction philosophy into the undergrad architecture programme, and the levelling up of digital design skills and BIM capabilities for students.
