At Newman College we cultivate and celebrate our distinct Catholic nature through the promotion of ‘Dignity and Excellence' for all members of our College family... The Oxford Movement was keen to see the Church of England return to many Catholic beliefs and forms of worship which were used in medieval times. By 1845 Newman had left the Church of England and was received into the Roman Catholic Church where he was eventually granted the rank of Cardinal by Pope Leo XIII. Newman played a critical role in the founding of the Catholic University of Ireland, the forerunner to the University College, Dublin. He let his faith lead the way, despite facing many challenges in his life and is an excellent role model of perseverance, determination and courage.
