Alan Hayward

Job Titles:

Alan is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Chartered Engineer and renowned bridge design expert. He was a founding Partner of Cass Hayward and led the firm for 16 years until his retirement in 1999. He has remained involved in the industry - and with Cass Hayward in particular - and in 2018 celebrated 60 years enthusiastic engagement with bridges in the UK and worldwide. He still makes a significant contribution to a number of our projects and remains on hand for expert advice.

Alan Monnickendam

Job Titles:

Alan is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years experience of which more than 25 years has been at Cass Hayward, where he was a Partner from 2000 to 2021. For the greater part of his career Alan has been involved in the design and construction of many bridges and his personal portfolio includes a significant number of award winning projects e.g. Paddington Bridge Project, and most of the moveable bridge designs produced by Cass Hayward. Alan is now engaged as a full time Consultant and continues to be involved in all aspects of the business.

Andrew White

Andrew is a Chartered Engineer who joined Cass Hayward in 2004 and has been a Partner since 2019. Throughout his career he has been involved in the design and construction of bridges and structures for the rail highways and maritime sectors including moveable bridges. Andrew has a special capability in the application of advanced analytical techniques and utilises these skills personally and in supervision of engineers for projects under his leadership. His extensive projects experience includes significant involvement in temporary works design for bridge installations, excavations and crane standings. Alongside his overall management of the firm Andrew takes on the role of Partner in Charge of projects and for many schemes this engages him in both design and design team leadership as well as providing a personal direct contact for Clients.

Ed Atherton

Job Titles:

Ed is a civil and structural Engineer with over 35 years experience in the design and construction of bridges. He has been at Cass Hayward since 2003 and a Partner from 2007 to 2021. Ed's earlier career was at specialist bridge fabricator Butterley Engineering where he progressed to Director dealing with design, fabrication, erection and contract management for many highway, railway and movable bridge projects. Now retained as a full-time Consultant Ed continues to be engaged on projects that focus on his steel fabrication/erection/repair expertise as well as his experience in running large contracts requiring multi-disciplinary input. Ed continues to take a lead role in inspection, assessment and design of repair schemes for Network Rail's timber viaducts including development of new and innovative materials and methods. Ed is also an experienced Expert Witness where his combination of practical and design experience have been actively utilised.

Gareth Davies

Gareth is a Chartered Engineer and joined Cass Hayward as a Graduate from Cardiff University in 1997. He has over 20 years experience and been a Partner since 2019. He worked with us during the completion of his Doctorate on plated structures and has since been involved in the design and construction of bridges in both the railway and highways sectors. Alongside his overall management of the firm Gareth takes on the role of Partner in Charge of projects and for many schemes this engages him in both design and design team leadership as well as providing a personal direct contact for Clients. He leads Cass Hayward teams designing bridges of all types and has been involved in many of our more prominent structures including longer spans & viaducts, moveable bridges and those requiring the application of advanced analytical techniques. He has been actively involved in the development of 3D modelling skills within the practice. Gareth is a fluent Welsh speaker.

James Parsons

James is Chartered Engineer with over 35 years experience of which the majority has been at Cass Hayward and he was a Partner for 19 years until 2015. For the greater part of his career James has been involved in the design and construction of many bridges and his personal portfolio includes a significant number of award-winning projects e.g. the 1.2km-long, £30m, viaduct for the A249 New Sheppey Crossing. He has been the leading designer for a large number of Cass Hayward bridges in the highways, railways and marine sectors and has managed our teams delivering these projects - a role in which he continues today.

Neil Sadler

Neil is a Chartered Engineer with over 40 years experience of which 30 years has been at Cass Hayward and he was a Partner for 18 years until 2004. As a Principal of the Firm Neil's responsibilities were primarily commercial but he was also closely involved with projects on a day to day basis particularly the larger ones or at the tendering stage with Contractors. His current role is in leading the pre-contract initiatives of the Firm including marketing and promotion, tendering/proposals management and providing engineering and bidding support to technical staff engaged in design:construct and ECI competitions.

Richard Clough

Richard is a Chartered Engineer with over 25 years experience at Cass Hayward and been a Partner since 2019. For his whole career Richard has been involved in the design and construction of bridges in both the railway and highways sectors. Alongside his overall management of the firm Richard takes on the role of Partner in Charge of projects and for many schemes this engages him in both design and design team leadership as well as providing a personal direct contact for Clients. He leads Cass Hayward teams and in recent years predominantly those directly commissioned by Network Rail or by its contractors in design:construct arrangements. He has built up particular experience in relation to repair, refurbishment and strengthening of historic and listed rail structures including the Cambrian Line Timber Viaducts. Richard has special qualities evidenced by his systemised approach to management for larger projects and is responsible for ensuring that the firm's RISQS qualification is maintained.
