Aaron Kariuki

Job Titles:

Aaron joined Architype in 2023 and is working on the new Maybury Passivhaus Primary School. Aaron has vast and varied experience in the housing, master planning, healthcare and commercial sectors both in historic and new build developments. He has a detailed understanding of 3D modelling, planning, and building control and creating tender and construction packages. Aaron brings 19 years of experience and has led projects on site and through contract administration to completion. Education Aaron graduated from the Mackintosh School of Architecture in 2002.

Ade Scholefield

Job Titles:
  • Architectural Designer
Ade is an architectural designer with over 10 years' experience working in architectural practice. Ade has briefly worked independently on a variety of private projects, including a rammed earth project exhibited in the RIBA small projects exhibition. He has trained with sustainable design driven practices, and his natural progression allured him to Architype in 2006 where he joined the design team working on St. Luke's Primary School, which received the 2010 RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award. Other projects include Oakmeadow Primary School, one of the UK's first Passivhaus Primary Schools and recently Herefordshire Archive & Records Centre, also designed to Passivhaus standards and several one-off private houses. Education Ade studied at the Welsh School of Architecture in Cardiff and graduated in 2001 with a BSc(Hons) in Architectural Studies and subsequently with a BArch in 2004. He is currently completing is Part 3 qualification at Birmingham City University.

Agatha Budowski

Job Titles:

Agatha joined the Edinburgh studio in 2023. After leaving college, Agatha worked in the photography business managing a successful photographic lab for more than eight years before moving to the UK. Agatha has worked as a freelancer retouching images and as a housekeeper in a photography studio. Agatha enjoys mountain biking and spending holidays at the beach. Education Agatha studied fashion design for a higher national diploma in Venezuela.

Alan Clarke

Alan Clarke is an energy and building services engineer with extensive experience of low energy and ecological construction, specialising in Passivhaus design since 2007. Alan's ability to simplify building services and influence building design to minimise the need for energetic intervention has led to many highly successfully performing schemes.

Alex Reeves

Alex is a qualified architect who has worked across a diverse range of residential, education and civic projects, ranging in scale from individual buildings to large urban regeneration. He has been responsible for the delivery of innovative and award-winning alterations to historic buildings in Edinburgh and London. Alex joined Architype in 2021 and is part of the team developing a new generation of Passivhaus schools in Scotland. He is a passionate advocate of social and environmental sustainability and the use of natural bio-based materials in modern construction and retrofit projects. He is also interested in the contribution architecture can make in society and has volunteered with several charities and professional working groups during his education and career to date. Education Alex studied architecture at Newcastle and Westminster Universities and qualified as an Architect in 2014.

Ann-Marie Fallon

Job Titles:

Ann-Marie is an Associate Director, Architect and Certified Passivhaus Designer, joining Architype in early 2016. Ann-Marie is one of the UK's leading experts on Passivhaus design and has shared her experience at UK and international Passivhaus Trust conferences. Ann Marie is leading an Architype team to develop an innovative process to create compatible workflows for Passivhaus and BIM implementation; streamlining the delivery of certified projects. She has a sound working knowledge of specialist thermal bridging and hygrothermal software as well as whole building energy modelling software. She has successfully delivered the award-winning and UK's largest Passivhaus residential scheme, Agar Grove. Since focusing on the development of our Edinburgh office she is overseeing the delivery several primary and secondary schools within Scotland. She was involved in quality and technical design reviews for the UK's largest Passivhaus secondary school, Harris Academy Sutton, the UK's first Passivhaus Plus school, Hackbridge Primary, and the UK's first Passivhaus Plus office, Bicester Eco Business Centre. Ann-Marie also brings expertise in EnerPHit, the Passvhaus standard for retrofit, having delivered Architypes first Enerphit in 2017 and the first Enerphit in Ireland in 2011. Ann-Marie worked closely with the Scottish Futures Trust developing the new cost metric for Scotland's learning estate as well as contributing to new energy requirements for Scotland's education sector, linking capital funding to operational energy performance over a 25-year period. In addition to her work at Architype, Ann-Marie has always had an interest in giving back to architectural education. She is a part-time teaching fellow at the University of Bath, and also visiting part 3 External Examiner for the Technical University of Dublin and The Bartlett School of Architecture UCL London. Education Ann-Marie became a fully qualified Architect in 2013, following her studies at the Dublin School of Architecture, where she was awarded the Jack O'Keefe medal for academic excellence. Interested in deepening her knowledge in sustainable architecture, she went on to complete an MSc in Environmental Building Design at Cardiff University in 2014. Ann-Marie was also among the first in the UK to become a Certified Passivhaus Designer in 2009. Ann-Marie has also been a regular contributor on the national and international conference/CPD circuits on topics such as Implementing Passivhaus in Practice, Zero Carbon, Fuel Poverty and Passivhaus at Scale, Embodied Carbon Impact of Passivhaus and has regularly shared lessons learnt from key Architype projects.

Anna Kerrane

Job Titles:

Anna is an architect with significant experience in community engagement, co-design and design education, with adults, children and young people. She has a particular interest in low-energy and sustainable design and has worked on a range of Architype projects including Mulberry Academy London Dock, a major Passivhaus school in London, and a new learning centre for The Royal Parks Anna has experience of architectural work in cultural, schools - primary, secondary and SEN - and in the sports and residential sectors in Ireland. She has participated several times in Architecture in Schools programmes in London and Dublin with Open House and the Irish Architecture Foundation. Prior to working as an architect Anna co-ordinated design competitions for the Architecture Foundation, giving her a deep understanding of articulating and addressing client needs through a brief. She also managed community consultation for projects in Tower Hamlets. Education Anna completed her undergraduate degree in Queen's University, Belfast. Her postgraduate Part 2 studies were at London Metropolitan University and she received her Part 3 from Westminster University. Anna has been an examiner for the MEng course at Nottingham University and is currently undertaking a distance learning course on best practice in deep Carbonlite retrofit.

Aoife Gilchrist

Aoife joined Architype in October 2022, bringing experience on a variety of educational, civic and residential projects. Since joining Architype, Aoife has been working on University of Exeter student accommodation, with a focus on the deep retrofit of an existing student accommodation block. She has a particular interest in inclusive design that champions both environmental and social sustainability. Education Aoife completed both her undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of Sheffield, graduating from the March course with distinction in 2022. Her joint thesis project focused on the fight for the decriminilisation of sex work and the creation of a workers' union in Sheffield. Through consultation with sex worker led organisations, the project explored the co-creation of safe and inclusive spaces within the city. During her studies, Aoife was an active member of a student-led climate action group, campaigning for a greater emphasis on sustainability in architectural education.

Ashley Barley

Ashley joined Architype in 2022 and is working on projects for the Imperial War Museum. Before pursuing architecture, Ashley worked for three years in the video-game industry, and later worked in secondary schools as an economics teacher. While studying in Torino, Ashley worked as a research intern for Future Urban Legacy Lab, researching exemplar projects of sustainable architecture, to help develop tools for analysing the sustainability credentials of future architectural projects. Education Ashley completed a Laurea in Architecture from the Politecnico di Torino and a Master of Architecture in Sustainable Architecture from the Centre for Alternative Technology.

Becka Aitken-Moist

Becka brings over 15 years' experience in learning and development roles, coaching, monitoring and supporting individuals and their teams to deliver high standards and meet requirements and expectations. Having previously worked as a primary school teacher, the education projects Architype are developing spark interest for Becka. Becka enjoys presenting in front of groups and is driven to enable others to get the best from themselves.

Ben Humphries

Job Titles:

Ben has been part of the senior management team at Architype since 2008 and was made Director of the London office in 2015. Ben has consistently delivered a wide range of complex community, educational, and public commissions and has led many of Architype's innovative and award-winning projects including The Enterprise Centre, an exemplary low carbon building for University of East Anglia, Harris Academy Sutton, the UK's first Passivhaus secondary school and Duxford Paper Store for Imperial War Museums. As Director, Ben has involvement in all projects across the office at both strategic and delivery stages, and promotes a relentless focus on the design quality of Architype's output through rigorous reviews and QA. Ben is passionate about sustainable architecture and is keen to enthuse clients about the benefits of Passivhaus, natural materials, reducing embodied carbon and Soft Landings. Ben is Architype's director trustee for Architype's Employee Benefit Trust. Education Ben studied for both architectural degrees at The University of Newcastle upon Tyne, before completing his professional qualification at London South Bank University. Ben worked for a number of practices in London and Kuala Lumpur before joining Architype in 2000.

Bob Hayes - Founder

Bob Hayes was a founding director of Architype and has been part of the management of Architype since it's inception in 1984 until May 2015. Bob has 39 years as a practicing Architect working predominantly on projects in the public sector including education, community, public and environmental demonstration buildings, and for the last 30 years he has led Architype to become one of the UK's leading practices in environmentally sustainable design. His early career was influenced by the work of Walter Segal and the Lewisham self-build schemes. Bob was instrumental in Architype's continuing development of Walter's ethos in Architype's own self-build schemes, shaping the practice's commitment to design socially, economically and environmentally responsible buildings. Bob has since been responsible for many of Architype's key public projects including housing and community schemes and has led the London office's pioneering approach within the education sector. As Director, Bob was involved in every project in the office at both strategic and delivery stages, and has been a key player in Architype's focus on, creative and technical innovation, and research and development to achieve more sustainable design solutions. His excellent management skills and his commercial awareness has enabled Architype's steady and sustainable growth over the last decade. In his new role as Senior Consultant he will continue to use his experience and expertise to support the new management team as well as continue project work and key client support. Education Bob studied Architecture at the Architectural Association and became a registered architect in 1976.

Catherine Harrington

Catherine lived and worked in Toronto, Berlin and Lisbon before settling in London. Since joining Architype in 1999, Catherine has delivered numerous projects, ranging from visitor center's and office buildings, to primary, secondary schools, and schools and colleges for special needs students. As a Client Adviser registered with the RIBA, and with a core expertise in educational buildings, she is a champion for design excellence and delivering low energy, sustainable buildings. She is skilled in assembling high-quality strategic masterplans for site and managing projects with complex requirements and multiple stakeholder groups. Catherine was the project architect for a number of competition winning projects, including the National Trust's Chilterns Gateway Centre and for the Camden Centre for Learning, where she is currently conducting a Soft Landings programme. Education Catherine studied architecture at the University of Waterloo in Canada, and obtained her diploma (RIBA Part 1 & 2 at the Architectural Association in London, UK. She is an ARB and RIBA member, and is registered as a Client Adviser with the RIBA.

Charlotte Jacques

Charlotte is a Part 2 Architectural Assistant who has recently joined Architype's Edinburgh office, bringing experience she has gained both in Scottish and international projects. Her passion for architecture began through exploration of the medium of photography, framing and capturing the built form in a variety of ways to uncover architectural ideas. Photography still plays a big role in her work, using it to translate a sense of space in a project and reflect the surrounding context. In her work, Charlotte is interested in how people interact with architecture, and how we can create architecture to have a positive impact on peoples lives, taking into consideration atmosphere, spatial value and materiality. At Architype, Charlotte is currently working on a range of Passivhaus Edinburgh school projects. Education Charlotte undertook her Part 1 and Part 2 in Architecture at the University of Edinburgh, graduating in 2016 with distinction. During her undergraduate she was commissioned to complete a project for the University of Edinburgh University of Edinburgh that analysed Spaces and Practices of Welcome for prospective students who visited the university for the first time. Charlotte was presented with an Edinburgh Award for the work that was carried out. Charlotte passed her Masters Degree in Architecture in 2022 and has been leading on both Passivhaus new build and EnerPHit estate analysis, bringing sustainable design of the highest quality to projects across Scotland. Charlotte became a Certified Passivhaus Designer in 2020.

Chris Rooney

Chris originally joined Architype in July 2017 its the Hereford office, working on Agar Grove at RIBA stage 4 as well as assisting on several school projects. He rejoined the company in July 2021 after completing his final year at Cardiff University and has been involved with RIBA stage 4 detailing of North Muirton Primary School. In addition to this he has been part of the team auditing a series of models for Passivhaus analysis for decarbonizing Edinburgh City Council's building assets.

Christian Dimbleby

Christian has a passion for low carbon design, and is qualified as both an Architect and Chartered Engineer (with CIBSE). Christian has worked for Architype since 2004, bringing his low carbon expertise, detailing knowledge and BIM skills to a wide range of projects. Christian has developed an expertise in educational projects, through working on a multitude of early years children's centres and primary schools. This includes three award-winning schools; The Gower School, Holy Trinity Primary School and most recently, Highgate Junior School. Christian has likewise been involved in university projects and was key member of the team delivering the much-celebrated Enterprise Centre. He is currently involved in designing the first Passivhaus secondary school in the UK. Christian also uses his technical skills on research projects including Post Occupancy Evaluation and in developing the RAPIERE embodied carbon analysis software tool. Christian is also active in community work, and brings his experience of community involvement and inclusive design to his projects. Education Christian studied the MEng Architecture and Environmental Design at the University of Nottingham, and his Part 2 & Part 3 at London Metropolitan University. He qualified as an Architect in 2011, and as a Chartered Engineer in 2013.

Chryssa Thoua

Chryssa joined Architype in 2014 as a researcher, working on school building performance evaluation, in collaboration with Coventry University. Her work is now split between research, as a PhD student at University College London (UCL), and architecture. Chryssa's early work at Architype included the evaluation for the internal environmental quality of a selection of Architype school projects. The findings from the research feeds directly back into our design process, informing the aspects which can be developed and improved upon, besides providing evidence on the health and well being of current building users and building performance. The results were disseminated at conferences and events nation wide, leading to an ongoing collaboration with UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE).

Clare Cade

Job Titles:

Clare has worked on a variety of building types in her career from large mixed-use commercial projects, to small community buildings, to the refurbishment and extension of a small Grade II listed hotel. She has a particular interest in education buildings and has most recently worked on two new build SEN free schools for pupils with ASD, leading the projects from feasibility / concept design to construction. She is currently part of a team working on the detailed technical design of a new build 6FE secondary school in central London. Education Clare obtained a first class honors undergraduate degree from University of Newcastle upon Tyne, before spending 2 years working overseas in the US and Caribbean. She completed her postgraduate diploma at the Bartlett School of Architecture at UCL and obtained her Part 3 at London Southbank University. Clare became a Certified Passivhaus Designer in 2020.

Deborah Nicol

Deborah is a Part 2 Architectural Assistant who joined Architype's Edinburgh studio in 2021. At Architype, Deborah has worked on two ongoing Passivhaus high school projects in the wider Edinburgh area. Deborah has always had a keen passion for the environment, and with her masters' degree focussed on architectural responsibility to climate change. This continues to influences her design approach. Education Deborah undertook both her undergraduate and postgraduate study at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen. Her dissertation addressing the reuse of church buildings was Robert Gordon University's entry to the 2020 RIBA Dissertation Medal. Her final year thesis investigated ‘life through longevity' looking at the importance of reuse within the built environment from a social and environmental perspective.

Demi Nikolova

Job Titles:

Demi joined Architype in September 2021 as a Part 1 Architectural Assistant, based in our Edinburgh studio. Demi has played a key role in several Architype projects, including assisting in the production of feasibility and RIBA stage reports, producing 3D visualisations and creative illustrations for Beeslack and Currie high schools. Demi has a passion for building conservation and sustainability and is a keen architectural photographer. She enjoys the investigative side of site analysis, problem solving and developing options to resolve design development challenges to create enjoyable spaces. Education In 2017 Demi studied a Bachelor of Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art, with a clear love of the architecture within this community. Key projects included "imagining the rebirth of historic buildings at risk across Glasgow", which held importance, yet were abandoned. Demi also has an MA in Scandinavian Studies and English Literature.

Diana Chirescu

Diana has a particular interest in how low-energy design strategies can be adapted to public sector building standards, as well as how the implementation of digital construction can improve quality. As a BIM expert, Diana joined Architype in 2020 and is currently working on exemplar Passivhaus education projects in Scotland, including Maybury Primary School and the innovative low carbon Community Renewable Energy Project (CoRE) in East Ayrshire. Diana has worked on education and transport projects of different scales across Scotland. Her Part 3 case study focused on the design development of a pair of West Lothian nurseries, one designed to the Passivhaus standard and the other to typical building standards, which highlighted the significant energy, carbon, cost and comfort benefits of Passivhaus. At her previous practices Diana worked on several large scale international sports developments and education buildings. Highly experienced in BIM Manager and BIM Coordinator roles she develops schemes in Revit to BIM Level 2 standards, which brings significant project efficiencies and quality improvements. Education/Certifications Diana completed her bachelor's degree at the University of Liverpool and her postgraduate Part 2 studies at the University of Edinburgh. She received her Part 3 from the Architects' Professional Examination Authority in Scotland (APEAS).

Eleni Germanou

Eleni was very excited to join the people team as she feels she can combine her experience as a practice manager with her human resources knowledge to help improve Architype's systems. Her role includes providing HR support across the company, supporting the development and implementation of HR initiatives and systems and delivering Architype's people strategy objectives. Eleni has a great love of people and her mission is to help the development of Architype's employees ensuring all employees are happy, healthy and skillful. Eleni joined Architype in 2004 as she wanted to work for a company that aligned with her values on sustainability and caring about the environment. She has over 15 years of valuable experience, including as practice manager for Architype, and previous work for a hotel property company. Education Eleni's qualifications include a BTEC National Diploma in Business & Finance, CIPD Level 3 Diploma in Human Resources and a certificate in counselling skills.

Emily Partridge

Driven by a passion for environmentally sustainable and socially conscious design, Emily has worked at Architype since 2014 and leads a portfolio of public sector Passivhaus projects. Emily helped establish and now manages Architype's information management group, advising clients on their project and asset information requirements. Emily has led several key projects across the housing, community and education sectors, and more recently has assisted with Architype's newly founded Edinburgh office. Following her work to deliver a series of Passivhaus schools in Wales, she currently oversees a group of Scottish primary schools, challenging conventional classroom design with open plan, agile spaces and fully integrated community hubs. Emily is involved in setting up and maintaining Architype's BIM protocols, providing training and support to co-owners to ensure a structured approach to our delivery. Education After graduating from the University of Cambridge in 2010, Emily went on to study for a professional diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies at the Centre for Alternative Technology. She completed her professional qualifications at Cardiff University and was presented with the Stanley Hall Cox Prize for academic excellence. More recently, Emily completed the Advanced Professional Certificate in Construction Project Management with the APM. Emily enjoys disseminating the latest thinking in sustainable and digital design - and regularly shares best practice and lessons learnt through presentations, discussions, and articles. She is a visiting tutor at the Centre for Alternative Technology (Machynlleth) and has taught at UCL and Cardiff University.

Emma Taylor

Emma has over 10 years' experience working as an architect in practice. After spending some time with Architype as a student, she returned in 2020, after gaining experience working for a number of practices in the UK. Emma has experience working on a range of projects, for both private and public sector clients and is currently working on the Wolverhampton Passivhaus housing projects. She has a keen interest in environmentally sustainable design, which led to her qualifying as a Passivhaus Designer in 2017. Education Emma studied at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne for her Part 1 and the University of Liverpool for her Part 2. She went on to complete her Advanced Diploma in Professional Practice in Architecture in 2009 at the RIBA North West where she was awarded a distinction.

Freya Heath

Freya is a qualified architect with experience in a diverse range of projects including higher education, healthcare, domestic, conservation and Passivhaus. Freya has a keen interest in sustainable construction as an integrated aspect of all projects and in particular how that can be applied to existing structures. Freya joined Architype in early 2021 having worked for practices in London, Scotland and Australia. Most recently she worked on a Passivhaus higher education and cultural centre in the Scottish islands. With Architype, Freya has been working as part of the teams delivering a series of pioneering Passivhaus schools in Edinburgh. Education Freya graduated from the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow with a Bachelor and Diploma in Architecture before qualifying as an architect in 2015.

Gabby Joyce

Job Titles:

Gabby joined Architype's Edinburgh team in 2020 as a Part 2 architectural assistant. Gabby is interested in implementing Passivhaus and zero carbon buildings on a large scale with a focus on renewable materials and high-quality spaces, as well as exploring emerging digital construction and presentation methods. She previously worked on residential passive houses in New Zealand while studying for her Master's degree. While at Architype, Gabby has contributed to the design of North Muirton Primary School, Dunfermline Learning Campus, Currie Community High School and multiple Passivhaus consultancy projects. Gabby is an experienced Passivhaus and ECCOlab modeller and is part of the design team for the National Energy Research and Demonstrator (NERD). Education Gabby completed both her undergraduate and postgraduate studies at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand, graduating with a Master of Architecture (Professional) with distinction in 2019. Gabby is a Certified European Passivhaus (CEPH) designer.

George Mikurcik

Job Titles:

Shortly after George joined Architype in 2006 he was the project architect for St Luke's - Britain's first BREEAM Excellent primary school, after which he led the team for the neighboring Blakenhall Community and Healthy Living Centre, located on the adjacent site. As a keen mountain biker, George was well suited as the lead designer on a Forestry Commission Wales' Visitor Centre project at Coed y Brenin, which utilised a pioneering, homegrown timber construction method called brettstapel. This experience left him well placed to lead the design of the award winning Burry Port Community Primary, where the local authority client encouraged an innovative use of Welsh timber. Subsequently, George has since been involved with the same client team, in the delivery of Ysgol Trimsaran. Other projects include a number of private houses, feasibilities and recently the development of a prefabricated Passivhaus local authority housing scheme in Swansea. George is currently building his own Passivhaus using sustainable materials, which include local cedar cladding, prefabricated timber and straw panels and clay plaster. Education In his home country of Slovakia, George graduated from the Slovak Technical University in Bratislava in 2002. Following his move to UK, George worked for a smaller architectural practice, gaining experience of the construction industry. He fully qualified in 2006, upon joining Architype. George is one of our in-house Passivhaus Designers, he was one of the first batch of people in the UK to pass the European Passivhaus Designer exam.

Grace McGuire

Job Titles:

Grace has a passion for the environment and sustainable design, aiming to create a positive state of change for communities. Grace joined Architype in 2021 as a Part 1 architectural assistant and has since worked on the zero carbon development plan for Plymouth Marjon University and Mulberry Academy London Dock Passivhaus secondary school in central London. With a keen interest in the visual arts, Grace completed an Art Foundation Diploma where she specialised in 3D and spatial design before beginning her career in architecture. She is highly skilled in developing and presenting architectural concepts in an engaging way. Education Grace graduated with a first class architectural degree from Manchester School of Architecture, where she achieved an award for ‘Outstanding Academic Achievement' and was nominated for the Architects' Journal Undergraduate Student Prize. Her final year project was focused on designing for the future. She designed a cinema for the centre of Manchester based on the notion of layers of flexible temporality - the inside is longer-lasting than the external elements.

Hannah Dalton

Job Titles:

Hannah joined the Architype Edinburgh office in 2020. She previously practiced for over two years in Berlin, where she worked on a range of residential and commercial projects. During this time, she gained experience working for an architectural model maker, continuing her interest in the craft. She has been a guest critic at the Bauhaus, Dessau, and the University of Westminster, continuing her interest in architectural education. Since joining Architype, Hannah has worked on the CoRE project, an innovative net zero carbon research centre situated in Cumnock, East Ayrshire. She is currently part of the team delivering Hereford Museum and Art Gallery, a Grade II listed building which will be extensively renovated to create an exciting new gallery space as well as improving the fabric performance to meet EnerPHit standard. She has been involved in many early-stage Scottish feasibility projects and Passivhaus consultancies, combining her strong design skills with increasing Passivhaus knowledge. She is a firm believer that sustainable design should be at the forefront of architectural conversation. Her design background supports Architype's sustainable ethos in creating innovative, ecological spaces. Education Hannah gained her BArch with distinction at the University of Dundee, winning the Dundee Institute of Architect's award for her group project 'Between Thinking and Making'. She continued her studies at the University of Edinburgh, gaining her MArch in 2017. In 2022 she qualified as an ARB registered architect, gaining a PGDip with distinction from the University of Newcastle.

Hazel Grant

Hazel brings curiosity and passion for informed, well-designed, practical proposals, focussing on delivering outstanding projects. With a rigorous attention to detail, Hazel has delivered a diverse collection of high quality new-build, renovation and refurbishment projects across a wide range of sectors including arts and culture, community, conservation, commercial, residential and education. During her time in Australia, Hazel specialised in premium specification residences and complex multi-residential mixed-use developments and had worked on a number of school projects.

Helen Murray

Hugh Pearce

Hugh joined Architype in 2017 as a Part 1, then returned in 2019 as a Part 2 architectural assistant. During his training he worked with other environmentally focused practices, gaining experience in newbuild and retrofit private residential, higher education and health sectors. Whilst working with Architype, Hugh has worked predominantly on Passivhaus schemes: London Docks Secondary School in central London, Ysgol Bro Hyddgen all through school in rural Wales, Agar Grove residential Passivhaus scheme in London, and a number of detailed studies for major house builders to help them improve internal environments and energy efficiency. Hugh has a sound working knowledge of life cycle carbon analysis, building energy modelling, and thermal bridge modelling. Education Hugh undertook Part 1 and Part 2 studies at the University of Bath, graduating In 2017 and 2019 respectively. His thesis projects focused on a community apiary, an urban masterplan for the city of Split in Croatia, the lifecycle carbon impact of midrise residential construction in the UK, and creating a sustainable future for the stone industry in Dalmatia.

Isis Reid

Isis joined Architype in 2021 after working primarily on residential and conservation work for a practice in Suffolk. She is personally interested in cultural expression in architecture from people of mixed backgrounds like her own, and her final project for her MArch was the British Institute for Intercultural Identity in Elephant and Castle, repurposing the condemned shopping centre for the community. She loves patterns and colours in design, natural materials and believes that everyone has a right to affordable, comfortable and inspiring spaces. She won a scholarship to study at the Mahindra United World College in India, where she made connections around the world and from this has worked in a variety of countries from a beekeeper in Maine to a cheesemaker in Chile. She is now working towards her Part 3 Qualification at the University of the West of England. She is currently renovating a derelict cottage, designing and building a new timber frame extension. James Todd

James joined Architype in 2000, and became an Associate Director in 2015. James has a deep knowledge of the social, environmental and health impacts of buildings and is passionate about delivering excellent design that builds holistically on Architype's pioneering research in Passivhaus, lifecycle carbon, building performance and user satisfaction. At Architype, James has extensive experience of leading design teams and managing the delivery of projects at all stages, across a wide range of scales and building types. He has guided the development and application of Architype's design quality and knowledge management systems. James was the project leader for The Enterprise Centre at the University of East Anglia, an exemplary low carbon building certified to both BREEAM Outstanding and Passivhaus standards. Other recent projects led by James include RUSS, a large-scale Community Land Trust led self-build development in Lewisham; Christ Church Central, a new build Passivhaus church in Sheffield city centre; Peckham Settlement community hub in South London and Holy Trinity Primary School expansion in Richmond. Education James studied at the University of Bath gaining a BSc (Hons) and then at Sheffield University for his Diploma and MA qualifications. During this time he also worked at the Centre for Alternative Technology as a builder, gaining practical experience of working with sustainable building materials such as rammed earth, limecrete, strawbale and timber frame. Jenny Kerrigan

Jenny is an effective and considered communicator, with a keen interest in community consultation and inclusion within the design process. Since joining Architype in 2007, Jenny has developed her knowledge of key design standards and regulations, and her skill is often used to audit overall project designs and details for compliance. As a key team player, Jenny has helped to successfully deliver St. Luke's Infant and Junior School in Wolverhampton (UK's first BREEAM Excellent Primary School) and subsequently the neighbouring project; Blakenhall Healthy Living Centre. Jenny's involvement in pioneering Passivhaus for Architype has resulted in her project leading Architype's 4th and the UK's 5th Passivhaus Primary School, Wilkinson in Wolverhampton. Education Jenny completed her Part 1 at the University of Sheffield, with a thesis on contemporary architecture and the modern church, and Part 2 at Oxford Brookes University where her studies focussed on landscape recovery, recycled materials, social cohesion and international regeneration. She gained her registration as an architect in December 2010 while working with Architype.

Jonathan Hines - Managing Director

An Architect since 1987, Jonathan became a director of Architype in 1989, established the Hereford office in 1996, and became overall Managing Director in 2015. With a life-long commitment to design and sustainability, Jonathan has led the development of Architype's innovative approach to sustainable design, and managed the teams that have delivered many of Architype's pioneering projects such as Twyford Barn, The Genesis Project, St Luke's Primary School and the UK's first Passivhaus projects. He leads Architype's strategic and business planning, and oversees the work of Architype's three offices in London, Hereford and Edinburgh. Jonathan continues to be at the forefront of sustainable thinking in the UK, challenging current conventional ideas and developing forward thinking, innovative but practical solutions. Jonathan Hollett

Jonathan joined Architype in 2021 after working on several Passivhaus schools since 2016 with the practice. Jonathan has been a passionate believer in low carbon buildings and has been a member of the CIBSE Low Carbon Consultants register since September 2007. Jonathan worked on the first A* EPC rated primary school in England & Wales which was completed in 2011, then in 2016 Jonathan provided the mechanical design for two Welsh Passivhaus primary schools as part of Architype's design team. Jonathan then left the Consultant Engineering team to join the main contractor in order to help oversee the school's construction, handover and post occupancy. Jonathan is an experienced building services design engineer and also is very experienced at thermal modelling, providing Part L reports, BB101/TM52 Overheating analysis, EPC's and daylight studies. He has experience of working a wide range of projects, having worked on residential, commercial offices, football stadiums, hotels, schools, hospitals and leisure centres. Jonathan now focuses on provided technical advice to Architype and their colleagues on several projects as well as undertaking Building Performance Evaluations to ensure buildings are operating as designed and that user feedback is fed back into the design process for future schools. Education Jonathan achieved his degree in Aerospace Manufacturing Engineering from the University of West of England in 2001. Jonathan has since qualified as a chartered engineer through CIBSE as well as qualifying as a Low Carbon Energy Assessor (LCEA) and a Low Carbon Consultant (LCC).

Jorge Barreno Cardiel

Jorge has been working in Scotland, across several practices since 2012 - before joining Architype's Edinburgh office in early 2020. He has worked extensively on projects in the education sector, although has a broad architectural CV. Jorge is passionate about using new technologies and design tools, like parametric design tools, which he believes help designers develop new and interesting, efficient architecture. Education Jorge graduated from the Spanish University of Alicante Polytechnic School (EPSA) in 2011. After completing his studies, he was awarded with Premio Extraordinario de Fin de Carrera for graduating with the highest grade point average of all architecture students. Whilst studying, he participated in an Erasmus exchange with Florence University's faculty of architecture in Italy. This experience brought him a connection with history and the rich values of the past, influencing his approach to preservation, retrofit and purpose in architecture. Following his move to UK, Jorge has worked for different architectural practices, gaining experience of the British construction industry, particularly in the educational sector. Jorge became a Certified Passivhaus Designer in 2020.
