Simon is an Advanced Member of NBE; he has contributed two articles to the NBE journal the 'Column', one on spinal stresses and one on practical sit to stand techniques. Simon was a peer reviewer for both the 5th and 6th editions of the Handling of People series. He has been involved with the Theatre Special interest group of NBE which included looking at postural stresses and simple ways of reducing them in the peri-operative environment. The work included studying limb holding, using retractors, handling operating sets and turning patients prone. On the strength of this work Simon has presented at three AfPP conferences. Simon has conducted research and co-wrote a book "Safer Moving & Handling in the Perioperative Environment" which is now published. Copies available from National Back Exchange.
Simon has been involved at a consultative level in setting up a safer moving and handling programme and systems for a group of 9 private Hospitals in England as well as hospitals in Bermuda. This work involved writing the company manual handling policy, auditing the manual handling within the hospitals, production of all the documentation, advice on equipment purchase and updating all staff involved with manual handling training.
Simon has been a very active member of Yorkshire Branch of the National Back Exchange, having been its chairman for 4 years. He was a member of the Product review panel which reviews manual handling equipment for the 'Column'. Simon has presented at a number of NBE conferences, delivering workshops and more recently as a Plenary speaker. Simon has been on the National Executive Committee since 2018 and is currently the Chair of the Association.
