Andrew Heap

Job Titles:

Andrew is now the Group Head of Student Experience at East Kent Colleges Group. Previously, he was Head of Student Support at EKC Canterbury College since January 2021. He led a team that including Careers Advice and Guidance, the Bursary team and the LRC as well as all key support services. He has worked abroad for languages schools, for a major retailer in Finance and Project management and as an Offender Manager for the Probation Service. Andrew has over 15 Years' experience in, Secondary, Further and Higher education at an SLT & CMT level. He is passionate about efficiency of process and empowering staff to make good decisions to enhance the Learner journey, ensuring students remain front and centre of all we deliver providing them with the tools needed to secure successful learning outcomes. As a member of the Canterbury LCB, Andrew will ensure that views of students and staff are heard most especially around how we can further and innovatively support positive outcomes for our student population.

Bill Hicks

Job Titles:

Bill previously worked at Thames Valley Berkshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) since 2014 in various roles including communications, stakeholder engagement, digital connectivity and, since 2018, as Head of Infrastructure where he managed the LEP's investments in excess of £170m. Before working at the LEP, he was a senior international marketing executive with extensive commercial experience within the media, entertainment and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) sectors. His most recent corporate work experience was with global media company NBC Universal.

Dane Simonds

Job Titles:
  • Assistant Principal
Dane was appointed to the role of Assistant Principal in September 2023, having previously been our Head of Construction.

Emma Wilkinson

Job Titles:
  • Deputy Principal - Director of Sixth Form
Emma is our Deputy Principal, as well as our Director of Sixth Form. She has been in the Director role since EKC Canterbury Sixth Form's opening in September 2022.

Helen Hammond

Job Titles:

  • Principal at WM College
Helen has worked in all areas of Further Education starting as a main grade lecturer in English and History, developing Access to HE courses and then developing adult learning provision. She has worked across a range of London institutions both within the GFE sector and also as Head of Service for Adult education for the London borough of Lewisham. For the past 8 years Helen has been the Principal at WM College based in Camden. The Working Men's College was founded in 1854 and is one of the Institutes of Adult Education which provides a wide range of courses for adults.

Joanna Denness

Joanna has worked in the Education sector for 30 years, with roles including, Tutor, Head of Department, Assistant Principal and Deputy Principal. Joanna works with curriculum heads to develop their provision to ensure it meets local, regional and national skills needs with a portfolio of experience that consists of a wide range of academic areas: from Visual and Performing Arts, to Health & Social Care, Engineering and much more. She has engaged with many groups to involve employers and key stakeholders to underpin curriculum activity and to enhance the student experience. Joanna gains inspiration when individuals proactively engage in the in the development of the College. Throughout her management career Joanna has demonstrated support, trust and mutual respect of business and personal priorities and has experimented with new ways of working to better meet business goals and personal needs, always engaging with new initiatives. Joanna has a track record of providing highly effective leadership to curriculum departments. Her continued improvement in the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, through the planning of relevant staff development and effective management of improvement in performance, has resulted in improved outcomes for many students. Still very much involved with her original trade of Hairdressing, Joanna enjoys cutting friends and families hair. Taking her dogs for long walks in the woods, and enjoying the company of friends and family.

Rebecca Set

Job Titles:

Rebecca has worked at Canterbury College as a qualified Lecturer for the last fifteen years in the Supported Learning Department. Her first career was in Hairdressing & Beauty Therapy; studying at Thanet College. She attained level 3 in both disciplines, winning awards on both courses and going on to manage a salon in Mayfair. She then had the opportunity to open and co-own a successful catering establishment in Canterbury, which she ran for 5 years. In 2003, she was runner up in a TV amateur gardening competition. As a result, Rebecca felt confident in studying RHS qualifications (Level 1 & 2) then achieved a BA (Hons) in Garden Design and became a finalist in ‘Student Commercial Design Award' for The Society of Garden Designers in 2015. Originally being employed as a Horticulture Lecturer, Rebecca completed her DTLLS with Canterbury Christchurch University. She also holds C & G Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment. In Rebecca's spare time, her hobbies include silversmithing (selling her work in a local gallery and craft fairs) and renovation. Having already restored a vintage caravan, she has recently bought a 1976 VW Campervan as a new project. Rebecca is a strong supporter for all vocational studies, whether it be for leisure, Lifelong-Learning or a career. Due to her diverse vocational background, Rebecca has been able to confidently teach a wide range of subjects within Supported Learning, from Entry level 1 to Level 1. She has helped to develop, create and deliver the current curriculum for the Learning-for-Life Entry 2 course. Rebecca has supported and mentored new lecturers in their role and is an integral part of the SL Lecturing team. Rebecca is also a Councillor on her local Rough Common and Harbledown Parish Council.

Simon Storey

Simon Storey joined Kent Cricket as Chief Executive Officer in November 2018 after six years as CEO at Derbyshire CCC. Before entering the world of sporting administration in 2012, he enjoyed a successful career in sales, marketing and senior management at Johnson & Johnson, both in the UK and overseas. He has served on the ECB Executive Committee as a representative of Non-Test Grounds and led Derby's successful bid to be an ICC Women's Cricket World Cup host city in 2017. Under his stewardship, Kent Cricket has seen success on and off the playing field including the recent Men's T20 Vitality Blast success in 2021. A believer that sport can be a powerful force for good in the community, Simon has championed the development of partnerships with Visit Kent, Canterbury 4 Business, Canterbury BID and Canterbury City Council.

Vanessa Nedderman

An experienced outreach professional, Vanessa Nedderman has spent her working career in adult education, educational guidance and higher education, focusing on collaboration and inter-institutional partnerships. Vanessa's first role after graduation was with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office where she worked in a number of departments including the East African Department, the Iraq/Kuwait Emergency Unit and Arms Control and Disarmament. Moving to Cambridge in 1991, she worked for a number of years with the University of Cambridge Board of Continuing Education running University courses at a range of local community colleges and centres across East Anglia. After moving to Kent, Vanessa worked for Kent Adult Education as an educational guidance adviser in Folkestone and Ashford and joined the University of Kent in 2004. At the University, Vanessa has held a number of roles relating to widening participation and has been responsible for the university's liaison with the EKC Group and other FE providers in the region. In her current role, she is responsible for the delivery of the University's outreach programme, run in partnership with schools and colleges across Kent and Medway, and for oversight of the University's role as lead institution for the Kent and Medway Collaborative Outreach Programme (KaMCOP). Vanessa lives in East Kent with her husband and has three grown up children. She is closely involved in her local village community, editing the village newsletter and acting as churchwarden for the local church. She is a member of a local adult ballet class and, for fun, makes elaborate birthday and celebration cakes for friends and family.

Victoria Copp-Crawley

No stranger to senior leadership in the FE sector, Victoria has been occupying Principal roles across the county since the start of the 2014/15 academic year. Prior to the formation of EKC Group, Victoria worked for East Kent College and was Principal of the Dover and Folkestone Campuses. This was a role that showcased talents in leadership, strategic planning and relationship building, skills which she has spent the best part of 20 years developing, working almost entirely in the FE. In her previous roles as Principal of Folkestone College and Ashford College, Victoria had a great relationship with her community and was an advocate of supporting and collaborating with local business. Victoria is passionate about Sport and experienced great success as a National Competitor in Squash both individually and in the England Squad. These achievements and competitive drive led Victoria to achieve her Sports Science Degree and Masters in Education and progress in her career in the Education Sector. Victoria is married and has two young children and enjoys spending time with her family and friends.
