Alan Clamp

Alan Clamp is the Chief Executive of the Professional Standards Authority (PSA) for Health and Social Care. The PSA promotes the health, safety and wellbeing of patients, service users and the public by raising standards of regulation and voluntary registration of people working in health and care. It is an independent body, accountable to the UK Parliament. Alan was previously the Chief Executive of the Security Industry Authority (SIA). The SIA is a public body established under the Private Security Act 2001 to regulate private security in the UK. Between 2011-2015 Alan held the post of Chief Executive at the Human Tissue Authority (HTA), an independent regulator sponsored by the Department of Health. Prior to this he worked in regulation in the education sector, including several years at Ofsted. In addition to his role at PSA, Alan is a member of the Management Committee at the Parole Board and a member of the Independent Decision-Making Body at the Bar Standards Board.

Claire Bassett

Claire is Vice Chair of the Internet Watch Foundation, as well as the Interim Chair and a Non-Executive Director of the Serious Fraud Office and Solicitors Regulation Authority. Until May 2022 she was Deputy Director General of the Independent Office for Police Conduct. Prior to this Claire was Chief Executive (Designate) of the Shadow Trade Remedies Authority, and Chief Executive of the Electoral Commission, the UK's independent elections watchdog and regulator of party and election finance during the EU Referendum. Previously, she was Chief Executive of two other government arm's length bodies: the Parole Board and the Criminal Cases Review Commission. Earlier in her career, Claire was a Director of Nacro, the crime reduction charity, and Chief Executive of Connexions Milton Keynes, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire. She also held various roles at the Legal Services Commission and began her career as a management trainee in the construction industry.

Debbie Mitchell

Debbie Mitchell is managing director of Aberdeen based financial planning firm, Atholl Scott Financial Services, where she has been at the helm for over 20 years. Before joining the firm, Debbie worked with Bowring Financial Services, part of the Marsh group, and had an excellent technical grounding during five years with Scottish Amicable. She has been involved with the Insurance Institute of Aberdeen since 2008 and served as its first female President from 2011 to 2013. She is a past Chair of the North Scotland Region Personal Finance Society and a former of both the CII Representative Council and the Local Institute National Forum.

Dr Artur Niemczewski

Dr Artur Niemczewski is an experienced executive and non-executive in the London Market and Global Specialty Insurance. He was CEO of Pro Global Insurance Solutions Plc until stepping down in late 2019. Prior to joining Pro Global in February 2014, Artur led Garwyn Group Ltd, the UK's leading specialist liability loss adjuster. Previously, Artur was Managing Director of Xchanging Broking Services Ltd (part of DXC), served as Chief Executive of the Specialty Division for Marsh UK Ltd and Chief Operating Officer of Willis International Holdings. While at Willis, Artur gained extensive international experience, covering most commercial and specialty insurance markets across North and South America, Asia and Continental Europe, including a secondment with Willis Germany. Artur started his insurance career as Director of Strategy at AXA Insurance and as a Strategy Consultant with McKinsey & Company. Artur has also advised the Board of Co-op Insurance and served as a Non-Executive Director of Asta, the Lloyd's turnkey managing agency. He currently advises the Board of UIA Insurance as well as Anthemis, a leading insuretech investment fund. He is a Freeman of the City of London and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Insurers. Artur holds a PhD in Nuclear Engineering and an MSc in Public Policy from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), an MSc in Mechanical Engineering from Warsaw University of Technology, and the Certificate in Insurance from the Chartered Insurance Institute.

Dr Helen Phillips - Chairman

Dr Helen Phillips is an experienced executive and non-executive, with a career spanning the public, private and not for profit sectors. Since stepping down from executive roles, Helen has taken up a number of non-executive appointments. In April 2023 Helen was appointed Chair of NHS Professionals Ltd, a company wholly owned by the Department of Health and Social Care and the leading provider of flexible workforce solutions to the NHS. In 2015 she was appointed as a lay member of the Legal Services Board (LSB), the oversight regulator for the legal services sector. She was appointed independent Chair of the LSB in 2017, and served a six year term to 31 March 2023. In 2015 Helen was appointed Chair of Chesterfield Royal Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. She served as a non-executive director of Social Work England from 2018 to 2021. Helen has also held non-executive director roles in Higher Education and the schools sector. Previously Helen was Board Director of Yorkshire Water with responsibility for customer services and networks, and Chair of Loop Customer Management Ltd, a Kelda Group subsidiary. Prior to that, her career as a regulator was as founding Chief Executive and Board member of Natural England, and before that as Director, Wales of the Environment Agency. Helen has a BSc in Zoology and a PhD in Environmental Science from University College Dublin. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology and a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Insurers.

A Chartered Insurance Practitioner with over 40 years of experience within the industry, Ian has worked in both general and life insurance and has held senior positions at several Brokers including Swinton, Broker Network and RAC. He is currently Insurer Relations Director at Kingfisher Group. Ian has also run an MGA dealing in both General and Life Insurance as well as working as a Strategy Manager at Britannia Building Society. He has previously been president of both the North Wales and Chester Insurance Institute and Kendal Insurance Institute. He has served on the CII Board as a CII Constituency Board Member as well as holding positions on CII Nominations and Remuneration Committee, CII Representative Council, and both Local Institute National Forum and Regional Local Institute Forum. Ian is married with a daughter and three grandchildren. He holds a degree Financial Management and in his spare time he is a school governor, follows Manchester United as well as having an avid interest historical maps.

Jennette Newman

Jennette has over twenty years of experience in the legal and insurance sector, focusing in the last 15 years at a leadership level on business innovation, operational change, and excellence in client service delivery and team development. Jennette has held senior business roles Clyde & Co, BLM and Ince & Co with responsibility for operational transformation and modernisation, and sector growth; both in respect of internal business-related strategy and externally in market and client-facing roles, covering client delivery models and strategic new business sector penetration. Jennette is a recognised UK and international casualty lawyer with experience in claims, defence litigation, and coverage, advising insurers, reinsurers, intermediaries, corporates, and other risk carriers on all aspects of their claims, investigation process, litigation, and alternative dispute resolution (ADR). She has a wealth of experience dealing with highly sensitive multi-party, multi-jurisdictional, and high-value and complex claims. In 2022 Jennette was elected Alderman of the City of London for Walbrook Ward.

Mike is Managing Director of LV= Broker Division and following the acquisition of L&G General Insurance is also CEO of L&G GI, leading the business as it fully integrates into LV= over the next couple of years. Over the last few years, he has overseen the transformation of the LV= Broker business with Commercial Lines being transferred to Allianz and the migration of Allianz Personal Lines to LV= Broker helping create LV= Broker as a leading Personal Lines Insurer. He is also a board director of the Motor Insurers' Bureau. Mike has a strong Underwriting background with over 30 years of experience in the Insurance Sector. Recognising the importance of high professional standards, he led LV= Broker in becoming a Chartered Insurer. He has executive responsibility for Diversity and Inclusion and has helped establish a number of networks to support colleagues and is passionate about the importance of culture in business.

Pauline Azzopardi

Pauline Azzopardi has enjoyed a career of over 30 years, working in senior roles with some of the world's largest international banking and insurance institutions, including Munich Re, HSBC, Middle Sea Insurance (currently Mapfre). For the last two years she has served as a member of the Insurance and Reinsurance Stakeholder Group (IRSG) and the Occupational Pensions Stakeholder Group (OPSG) of the European Insurance and Occupational Pensions Authority (EIOPA). Pauline is currently President of the Association for Consumer Rights Malta (ACR) and is Malta Representative on the EU Consumer Policy Advisory Group. She also served as President of the HSBC Bank Malta "Banking on Women Foundation" which promoted the professional advancement of women and was Vice President of the National Council of Women (Malta). She participated in initiatives organized by Age Platform Europe and was a member of Malta-EU Steering and Action Committee. She is a Fellow of the Chartered Insurance Institute and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and Biology from the University of Malta. She is a part-time academic and has delivered lectures in Bahrain, Oman, India and Malta. She is a visiting lecturer at the University of Malta. In her spare time she enjoys painting and history, especially military strategies.

Roger Sanders

Roger was the director of workplace distribution and industry affairs at Lighthouse Group Plc until 2020 and its acquisition by Quilter Plc in June 2019, having previously been Managing Director of its employee benefits division, and a director of Lighthouse Benefits Ltd, the sponsor of its master trust, the Corporate Pensions Trust, of which he was a trustee. Prior to joining Lighthouse in 2010, he was deputy chair and director of employee benefits at Helm Godfrey Ltd from 2005, which followed 22 years managing his employee benefits consultancy in the West End. From 2000-2003, he was also the executive director in London of Rasmala Investments Ltd, the first UK regulated business to develop and market sharia compliant products; he served on the Bank of England's working party on Islamic finance, achieving a change in the taxation of sharia mortgages in the 2004 Finance Act. Before starting his own practice in 1983, Roger worked for the Sun Alliance and London Insurance Group, which included a tour with Jardine Mathieson in Hong Kong. His "composite" career has given him a unique exposure to the world of general insurance, as well as to financial services, investments and occupational pensions. Roger was a member of the Financial Capability Board of the Money and Pensions Service for 5 years until 2020. He served as President of the Insurance Institute of London in 2017-18, and is a trustee of the new Museum charity from 2021. He has held a variety of industry and non-executive positions, including serving as a non-exec director of the Financial Ombudsman Service 2005-2013; as chair of the Financial Services Authority's smaller businesses panel 1999-2004, and as a non-executive director of the Personal Investment Authority 1996-2000. He was a founding member and a director and deputy chair of the Association of Independent Financial Advisers 1999-2005. In Europe, he chaired the life and pensions committee of the European Federation of Insurance and Investment Intermediaries in Brussels 2004-2006 and served 2004-2010 as the UK's retail market representative on the practitioner working group of the Committee of European Securities Regulators in Paris. Roger, awarded an OBE in 2002 for services to financial services regulation, is the son of a dairy farmer from North Devon and lives in Westminster. He is a Freeman of the City of London and was the Master of the Worshipful Company of Broderers for 2017-18. He is also Chairman of the Trustees of the English National Opera Benevolent Fund; was previously Chair of the Council of Roedean School until 2020; and is the Chief Honorary Steward of Westminster Abbey.

Russell Higginbotham

Russell started his career in 1986 with a UK life insurer and in 1991, he joined Munich Re as a Senior Marketing Analyst. He joined Swiss Re in 1994 and served in various roles in the Life & Health Reinsurance development and strategy teams. Between 2002 and 2005, he was Life & Health Country Manager for Japan and subsequently for South Korea. In 2006, he moved to Sydney and served as Chief Executive Officer of Swiss Re's Australia and New Zealand operations. From 2010 to 2015, he assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer Reinsurance for UK and Ireland, based in London, and was named head of Life & Health Products Reinsurance in 2016. He was appointed Chief Executive officer Reinsurance EMEA, Regional President EMEA and member of the Group Executive Committee in September 2018. With effect from July 2019, Russell assumed the role of Chief Executive Officer Reinsurance Asia and Regional President Asia. In April 2022, Russell was appointed CEO Reinsurance Solutions and member of the Reinsurance Management Team.
