I did tell him that you had moved into Knowlman Avenue (Alan used to live in the same street and maintained prized Camellias) and as always, he was interest to hear any news of former CBC colleagues. Dad's father was in the CBC and so our family have had a long association with the bank. Barrie was accountant at Coffs Harbour manager Cobar and in Loans and Funds for awhile. His wife Edna Moore was in the bank at Kyogle and her brother Calvin Moore was with the bank as well. I think Barrie had a stroke/dementia aged around 87 I think. Mary Lamborn's uncle Ted was manager at Mullum during our days along with Frank Condon whom I have let know. Darryl SEMMLER I am

Darryl SEMMLER I am so sorry to hear the news that Vic has passed on. I am moved today to acknowledge a man I admired and respected. Vic championed humility and always showed warmth and acceptance to all he met. He always said hello and asked about you no matter what level of officer you were and to his wonderful credit always knew who you were by name. My prayers to his family. God bless. (CBC/NAB Officer 1971 - 1988) Richard NOTT Almost everyone could make a comment about Vic and all of them positive and most glowing in praise of his intellect, management style, quiet but firm personality and industry. Having been one of the O&M team one had a chance to know him well and see his problem solving and task synthesis in action. Later he became Chairman of Australian Bank where I was the General Manager Banking and I had a second chance to work with Vic and get to know him on a more personal level. My last gathering with him was with he and Lola at Dick Balcomb's home for lunch where he was still his old self and I had a chance belatedly to thank him for his support over many years. (This was a good lesson to me as we do not often get a second chance to appreciate people. Say it whilst we can.) As was his usual manner, he was gracious and positive. In many ways he was a role model for most of us and I value his leadership and the opportunities he provided to most of us. A wonderful life and a great corporate citizen.

Dave BOADLE

Dave BOADLE On behalf of the Boadle family, I offer my sincere condolences to the Meyer family. I well remember my parents, John and Jeanette, only ever speaking with the greatest respect and fondness for Kevin, with whom they had a long relationship. John left us in 2015, and Jeanette (also a former CBC staff member: they met in Ballarat) is nearing her 89th birthday in a residential aged care facility near my home in Sandy Bay, a suburb of Hobart. Unfortunately Jeanette has become muddled over recent years and would I believe struggle to comprehend news of Kevin's death, but if a moment of clarity arises in her day, I'll gently mention it to her. I sometimes reflect on our family's odyssey around urban and rural Victoria at the behest of the CBC and the impact it had on my childhood; in particular the upheaval for a teenager being relocated to the novel culture of Hobart in the 1970s. It's worked out for the best I guess, but had a strong influence on my career choices that have allowed my children greater continuity of education and friendships. Mary LAMBORN Whilst enjoying a cup of tea after walking to and from Turramurra I separated the Sydney Morning Herald into sections, which is my custom on Saturdays and whilst perusing the main section death notices came across Kevin's notice and noted his funeral service is to be held on 19 November 2021. I remember Kevin as an international rugby union referee umpiring Wallabies versus All Blacks, plus Lions during the late 1960's early 1970's at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Also, on occasions as line umpire when Dr. Roger Vanderfield was the umpire. When he resided in St. Ives, I was introduced to his daughter who was assisting him in the shopping village. At the time I think there was a difference of opinion between both - body language told me. Bob WILMOT Whilst I did not know Kevin all that well, I remember him fondly, and in about 1983/4 I visited Sydney whilst on annual leave. I ventured into NAB House dressed in neat casual clothing, only to be fronted by the desk clerk (read security) advising I could not go up to see Kevin due not being appropriately dressed. I asked the desk clerk to phone Mr Meyer and tell him I would like to see him. To the desk clerk's surprise Kevin came down to the lobby. We had a nice chat and he said that unless I wore a suit I could not venture up to any level above ground. You could imagine how he described the rules, and finished by saying " It is no longer the good old CBC" Richard NOTT I worked with Kevin at Burwood and O&M plus when in International Helen CADZOW I'm saddened to hear of Kevin's passing. I had the privilege of meeting him and recording his oral history in 2018. My condolences to his family.

David B Wyndham

David B Wyndham was John R Wyndham's brother, who also worked with CBC on Relief Staff

David CLARK

Rowan Raymond-Jones advised members on 4/1/2014: So early in the new year we have bad news for all the many friends of David Graham CLARK. His wife Norma has advised us of his passing and mentioned the following notice in today's Sydney Morning Herald: "Beloved and loving husband of Norma. Loved and loving father of John, Peter, Alison and Paul, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather of their families. A service was held in St Alban's Anglican Church, Tryon Road, Lindfield on Friday 10th January 2014 at 2.00 pm." David had been unwell for some time and was at Neringah Hospital, Wahroonga, when he passed away.

David Wyndham - President

Job Titles:
  • President
David WYNDHAM I first worked for Vic when I moved from the role as an inspector's clerk on the 3rd floor to become his clerk on the 2nd floor. At that time Vic was the AGM Branch Banking. I worked with him for 4 years and then I became clerk to Geoff Bowen. When Mr Bowen (later Sir Geoffrey) retired, Vic became GM of the bank so I spent another 3 years as his clerk in his new top role in the bank. David Wyndham advised: On a personal note I knew David well and I am sure I can speak for members when I say he was held in very high regard throughout the bank for his knowledge, abilities and general good mate qualities. He will be sadly missed by all members. It is with great sadness that we advise the death of our colleague and friend Jack Seymour last Wednesday. Jack was highly regarded by all who met and worked with him throughout his career in the bank. Jack worked in Head Office, NSW, Melbourne Office, London Office, Queensland and WA. He was awarded an AM in June 2006 for services to primary industry through the Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria for fostering the development of the agricultural show movement, and to banking and rural finance. Jack is survived by his wife Yve and children John, Cath and their respective partners plus his grandchildren. Vale Jack Seymour President David Wyndham sent the following text to Members with e-mail addresses:-

David Wyndham Gordon

David Wyndham Gordon joined the bank on 1/2/1938 and retired on 16/9/1982. He was a Life Member of the club and at the time of his passing also the oldest member. He joined the bank at Scone and then followed moves to Parramatta, 11c Castlereagh Street and Crows Nest. He joined the AIF in June 1939 and served with the Army until January 1946. He re-joined the bank at Chatswood then followed moves to Goulburn, Epping which he opened, then Gloucester, Grafton and Inverell. He was then appointed Manager Lending Victoria, Divisional Manager Victoria and was Chief Manager Lending in the Managing Director's Department Head Office when he retired. Gordon had a very successful career with the bank and as importantly was held in very high esteem by his friends and colleagues. He was a great supporter of the club and thoroughly enjoyed attending both the Sydney and Out of Sydney luncheons where he was able to catch up with his mates. On his 98th birthday a small group of members was fortunate to gather with him, his son Bruce and Bruce's partner Ellie at the nursing home at St Ives where Gordon was living. We had a most enjoyable afternoon hearing Gordon's reminiscences of his bank and army days. We presented him with a special certificate to mark the occasion together with a bottle of good French champagne. In true CBC style Gordon insisted we not only open the bottle but ensure the contents were completely drained before we departed. Margaret Powell I was very sad to hear of Gordon's passing. He was such a lovely man and told me many stories of Grafton where my father grew up.

David Wyndham Pearl

David Wyndham Pearl spent a lifetime of service in the 'CBC', formerly in Lismore after which she became a mainstay at Canberra Office for many years. On the 4th April last year, we were most fortunate to welcome Pearl to our Out of Sydney Luncheon held in Queanbeyan where she was presented with her Life Membership Certificate. She will be sadly missed. Rex Daley My wife Nancye and I attended Pearl's service of Thanksgiving at the Anglican Church of St.John The Baptist, Reid ACT, with Janette Hyeronimus and Ann Taylor. It was a large service. Pearl had had no children of her own but many of her 16 Nieces and Nephews and 38 Great Nieces and Nephews plus her Sister and many old friends from that church were there. Pearl retired from Canberra Office. Esther Meszaros Pearl's association with the former Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, first as an employee and then, for very many years, as a member of the former employees" Club, was one of the most treasured connections she had. Pearl often mentioned that by working at the Bank she gained many insights into what the wider world had to offer and she took every opportunity to participate in these experiences. Pearl made many friends through the Bank and continued these friendships, through membership of the Club, and the "15 th of the Month lunches" of former employees in Canberra, for the rest of her life. I know Pearl tried to attend as many of the Club's meetings as she could, travelling to Sydney for the events. She read each newsletter avidly and kept back-copies for years. Her attendance at the meeting held in Queanbeyan on 6 March 2016 was one of the highlights of her year. We talked about it so often afterwards (I had taken her to that event and was able to put faces to some of the names Pearl mentioned). Pearl was absolutely thrilled, honoured and delighted with the "Life Membership" she was awarded and the certificate which the Club presented to her on that occasion. I can assure you that it hung in pride of place in her room at Kankinya Lodge, her final home in Canberra. I know, as I hung it there myself, after holding it in several spots on the wall. Pearl pointed it out to every visitor she had. Pearl died in her sleep, in her room, after a few days of being tired and unwell. She was 93 years of age (and three months-don't forget the months, she used to say). I shall miss her greatly. (Ed Note Esther was a great friend of Pearl)

Des AKERS

Des AKERS Working with Vic in Melbourne in the 60's and seeing at first hand his early leadership qualities was one thing, but sharing his sporting/social activities was another. He was a fierce competitor in sport and many a time we played golf on Saturday mornings and then cricket in the afternoon followed by the customary "review of the day's play" over drinks at the South Melbourne Cricket Club until stumps. But despite this social relationship, no one ever took advantage of it in later years because of the respect we all held for Vic. Above all, he will be remembered for his leadership as Managing Director of the CBC when he was still the same old Vic who was always approachable and prepared to listen. A quality that is so lacking in leaders of so many enterprises and government today. Vale Vic, we salute you. David BORDER A sad day. Vic, known to us all, was a pure gentlemen and a pleasure to meet on the 3rd floor as I recall at any time of the day. He, for me, brings back fond memories of my banking days with Charlie Kerr and many others. Sadly I'm in Singapore and unable to attend his funeral, but my thoughts are with the family.

Don Bullivant

Job Titles:
  • Life Member
Life Member Don Bullivant passed away on Monday evening at Royal North Shore Hospital. Tests recently disclosed the presence of a brain tumour and further tests showed he had advanced lung cancer but up to then nobody was aware he had any such problems. Don Bullivant was a very calm and approachable man who had the knack of sorting out most of our problems, be they work related or social. A great bloke who will be sorely missed by family and friends. Rest in Peace Don.

Ed McLennan noted: Sorry to hear about Graham, he was a top officer. He was Manager Administration and Accounting to my knowledge around 1999.

Errol Coles

Errol Coles advised that about three months ago lung cancer spread to his second lung and from there to his liver and ... he passed away last Thursday. Errol had been living on the South Coast. Ken Wood: I worked with Bob at Kingston A.C.T. branch for a number of years in the late 60's. I was Accountant and he was security clerk. For a month we swapped jobs so I could learn security work and help him at being Accountant. His wife (Jenny) worked at our Doctors, across the road from the Accountant's cottage, and she would ring my Mrs to tell her she had the next appointment. I have been to 4 funerals in the past 3 mos., mostly of people younger than I, having been born in 1936 forcible retired from the bank due to high blood pressure in 1987. It makes me feel real grateful that I can still walk 27 hole of golf per week.

Fred HARVISON

Fred HARVISON In my mind, Vic Martin was, and will remain, a great man and a wonderful leader. His appointment as Managing Director heralded a new direction for a truly great bank and, I believe, was eagerly embraced by all of us who were serving at that time. It was a period of rejuvenation which engendered a true sense of purpose for us all. Fred HARVISON I remember Des from my time on the third floor Inspectors' ('64-'69) and then on the fifth floor (Personnel '74-'83) when he was in International Division. Des also played in Burke Cup with CBC Rugby and I remember him as a real workhorse in the team. My recollection of Des is that of a quieter person, very personable, very professional with a gentle sense of humour. He didn't take himself too seriously, just a really good bloke.

Garry was passionate about the Club, its future and ensuring Chatswood RSL was always a welcoming place for all members to enjoy.

Geoff Chapman

Job Titles:
  • Club Member
Geoff Chapman advised From the North, today's internet version of the Newcastle Herald records Colin's death while mountain biking in Kosciusko National Park about 23km west of Jindabyne. .Col was Manager at Portland, Vic., Belmont, Nelson Bay and East Gresford branches. Geoff Chapman advised: Although Clyde was not a Club member, Geoff Chapman has provided us with some of Clyde's career history. He was Accountant at Armidale UNE branch, then first managerial appointment at Trangie, followed by appointments at Boggabri, Toronto & Gloucester. He was then attached to Taree branch performing district relief's and other duties. Clyde continued to work at Taree past normal retirement age. Geoffrey Smith advised: Saddened to hear of Clyde's passing. Clyde took over from me as Gloucester Manager in January 1987. He also came to the ACT in 1998 but I am not sure for what role.

Geoffrey MCINTYRE

Geoff McIntyre responded: Thank you for advising the sad news of the passing of my very dear old friend, Geoff Hastings. It was only 12 months ago that Ann and I had lunch with Geoff & Jeanne at the Mill Stream Hotel at Chichester and exchanged fond memories of our past experiences together in the CBC. You will recall that I was sent to London by the Bank in Feb.1962 for 12 months and Geoff and I worked closely together before he was sent to Australia for a short period. We visited each other's homes in Findon and Rodd Point during this period and spent a lot of time with our respective families. We have kept in touch over these past 60 years and I feel privileged to have enjoyed his friendship over this time. In normal circumstances I would tomorrow be planning to fly to London and then to Findon to attend the funeral such are my feelings for this wonderful friend. Unfortunately, my left foot has been encased in a surgical boot for the past four weeks and I am restricted in my movements for the next two weeks. I am deeply upset that I cannot be there to pass on my sympathy to Jeanne and the Family personally. Geoff McIntyre spoke of Alan at the December meeting. He said he would see him at Gordon Rugby from time to time and he was a very affable chap. He was a cheerful guy despite his battle with cancer. Geoff said he was proud to have known him and he was a good banker, aged 69.

Geoffrey Richard

David Wyndham advised information from Les Sullivan: It is with great regret we advise the passing of Geoff on the 10th December 2018. Geoff's father was also in the CBC in Queensland and may have managed branches in NSW as Geoff joined the CBC in 1947 at Lismore as a junior.

George ARKINSTALL

Kerri Kleidon of the NAB Queensland Retirees' Newsletter advised in their February 2006 issue that George has passed away. She says he apparently worked at Lismore many moons ago. George in 1969-70 was working in Brisbane Office Accountants Office and had a home in Brisbane and used to welcome people to stay there till they arranged other accommodation (e.g. John Beer stayed there initially after being allocated Audit Clerk in Queensland for 6 months from January 1970.

Glyn Ewart

Our thanks to Audrey Irving for advising that Glyn had passed away. She said he loved his banking career which started in Brisbane Office. When Glyn graduated from school he commenced a life-long banking career with the ‘C.B.C. He attended Albert Street Methodist Church on Sundays where his Dad sang in the choir. He spoke fondly of his early time in the bank where there were no adding machines and one of Glyn's jobs was to make the ink for the day: No biros or computers in those days. He was called up to National Service and spent 4 months at Wacol in Signals as he had a strong clear voice. He always maintained that Australia should bring back National Service and make it compulsory for all young people to build responsibility and respect. Romance came into his life when Audrey Foley moved to Brisbane in 1957 to do Teacher Training and they met at the Church's popular Sunday Night program. Glyn was transferred to Charleville and lots of letter writing and long car drives to Kingaroy kept the romance going.

Gordon John

We are most saddened receiving notification of the passing of John Watkins, a Life Member of our Club. John served many years in Branch Securities, thence in Administration roles, finally as the Bank's Secretary from whence he duly returned the Banking Licence of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited to the Reserve Bank 31 st December 1982. Condolences from the Club have been conveyed to his two Sons, Daughter, and their families. His Funeral is to be held at the Northern Suburbs Crematorium, North Chapel at 2:15 pm on Wednesday 22nd March. This will be followed by afternoon tea in the Sky Lounge at 3:15 pm.

Gordon Mills

Job Titles:
  • Head
  • Manager
Gordon Mills was a gentleman of the first order, and a pleasure to serve under - even if only for a 3 week period. Gordon Mills indicated he had been a Manager, Head Office before becoming Principal of Fernleigh Castle although he was not an academic. He had found him to be a great straight shooter who was practical in his approach. Gordon was not surprised he retired back to Dungog, where he became President of the Dungog Historical Society.

Graham Foulcher

Graham Foulcher was very sorry to read of the death of Col Bray. Whilst I was at Picton I saw a great deal of Col until he moved to the Port Macquarie area. His father (late Roy Bray) was my Dad's (Roy Foulcher) first boss when Dad first joined the Bank as a Junior in Head Office (Local Exchanges Dept. in those days.

HAROLD ROSS has recently passed away. He died unexpectedly about 10pm Wednesday 9 th August from an undiagnosed Abdominal Aorta Aneurysm.

Helen CADZOW I am

Helen CADZOW I am saddened to hear the passing of Des Leggett. Please pass on my condolences to the family. Glenda CAMPBELL (Terry Campbell's wife) Des had an amazing career, didn't he? He worked in Head Office, Melbourne with Terry and he most likely worked with or knew Dad (Brian Campbell). I'm not sure whether Terry and Des knew each other before Melbourne, but they probably did (especially as they shared a love of sport). Des was certainly one of the old breed: a total gentleman, family man and just a nice solid fellow. Kay and I did handcrafts and looked after kids whilst Terry and Des worked long and hard. Kevin EKE Such sad news to learn of Des's passing. A true gentleman and genuine friend, who was held in high regard by those who had the pleasure to work with him. I worked with Des at Gosford Branch way back in 1965, and later renewed our acquaintance when we transferred to Head Office. In February ‘68, Des, I and two others enjoyed a Pacific Islands cruise on board P&O's Arcadia, with fun times and great memories to look back on. Life moved on and, via the CBC grapevine, I was absolutely delighted to hear that Des had married Kay (also a fellow banker), raised a family and enjoyed a continued and rewarding banking career, going from success to success. Sadly, I lost contact with the Leggett's after I resigned from the CBC, however, was able to, from time to time, follow their family fortunes, via valued friendships, still in the CBC and later NAB. Des was one of a kind, an "old school" Banker, a quiet achiever, loved his sport and will be sorely missed.

Helen MEIKLE

Kevin Meyer advised of Helen's funeral notice. Helen was Treasurer of the CBC Officers Club for a number of years. Geoff Matthews advised: My wife Maureen (0nce Maureen Sweaney) at one time took Helen Meickle's place in the Overseas Department. She can't remember what year. She thinks that Helen then went to London as girls did in those far off days.

Henry "Roger" Skinner LINDSAY

January 2019 Michael Lindsay advised Dad died on 20 th December 2081 after an 18 month battle with Leukaemia. He was 85. When he retired he was manager of Macquarie University Branch. He joined the Bank in Wagga in 1950. His father Robert Lindsay was the Manager. I know he worked in these branches:

Henry Walker

Henry Walker was born in London in 1844. His family arrived in Australia in 1853. He was the eldest son and he became an employee of The Commercial Bank of Sydney. In 1885, after rising to the status of manager, first in Bourke, then in Bega, he resigned from this bank in order to return to Sydney to educate his children. Some time later he joined the Queensland National Bank, serving in Ivanhoe prior to moving to Cooktown in 1890 just when the QN Bank was building its new premises.

Ian Burgess

Ian Burgess said: I write with a heavy heart to inform the Club of the passing of my father John Terry Burgess. Dad had been ill for a long time and his condition declined significantly in the last six weeks or so. He died peacefully at home surrounded by family and the magnificent carers at his retirement village. Dad worked in the bank for over 40 years and was a proud CBC man to the end. He worked in various locations across country NSW including Deniliquin, Muswellbrook, Nyngan, Albury , Mudgee and Nowra before accepting the Manager's position at Grifffith in the mid 1970's. He then moved to Inverell for a stretch before relocating to Armidale in mid 1981 where he stayed for over eight years. His last years with the NAB were in Regional Office at Tamworth where he and my mother retired. Dad had a long involvement in the Scouting movement, providing significant service as the Regional Property Officer which was acknowledged by the Association. He was also an active Rotarian with the Tamworth First Light Club and was heavily involved in the Club's Bowel Scan program and Golf Trip fundraisers and wrote the Club's 20th Anniversary history. He received the Paul Harris Fellowship for his long contribution to the Rotary organisation. Terry is remembered by his wife, Patti, two sons, David and Ian and their wives, Kate and Bernadette. He is also remembered by his grandchildren, who he took great pride in and joy from: Zac, Zara, Olivia, Patrick and Elizabeth. We will miss his good humor and wise counsel but have beautiful memories of a life well lived.

Ian Holsten Gordon

Ian Holsten Gordon has been a real stalwart of the club attending several Country meetings in recent years which was an inspiration to us all. Does this make Bill Butler our oldest Banker??

Ian Holston

Ian Holston was very saddened to read of the passing of John Rowlands. Ian had known John since the days he lived above Newtown Branch when he was Accountant at Sydney University. Ian was his Accountant at Bondi Junction and he was most helpful when we were building our home at Westleigh. We have been friends with John and Leigh for many years. Bob Handel was very sorry to hear of John Rowlands' death. I am sure you will have fond memories of John from our Sydney University days, as I do, and his frustrations in conducting the branch under the stewardship of Moorecroft. And finally, his delight, when he was appointed to open a new branch at Seven Hills. They were the days!! Ian Holston had known John since the days he lived above Newtown Branch when he was Accountant at Sydney University. Ian Holston has been asked by the family, to contribute to the service. David's brother Forde has advised of the following arrangements to celebrate his life.

Ian Ramage

Job Titles:
  • Editor
Enthusiast who kept North Shore history alive. Local expert … Ian Ramage was passionate about Wahroonga. Ian Alastair Ramage, who has died at 81, was the only son of Major Raymond Ramage, ED, French Croix de Guerre, and his wife, Doris. He grew up in Roseville and was selected to attend the first opportunity class at Artarmon Public School. When he was 12, he won a scholarship to Knox Grammar School and his lifelong interest in Wahroonga was born. He studied in the evenings at the University of Sydney to complete his bachelor of economics while working for the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney Limited. He served in the RAAF from 1944 to 1946 as a radar operator at Gosford in NSW and Foster, Victoria. The radar station at Foster was at the base of the Wilsons Promontory lighthouse. To reach the station from Melbourne, Ramage had to catch a train and a service coach before being driven to the start of "the track". Here, he handed his kit to a transport unit for onwards carriage by mule and walked the remaining 22 kilometres. He was also in Active Reserve from 1951 to 1956 and served as a pilot officer, administrative and special duties, intelligence. He received the Australian Defence Medal this year. In 1957 he re-established contact with the University of Sydney. He was secretary of the university union for 12 years. He was later the university's senior finance officer, investment officer, accountant, associate bursar and acting bursar. At one stage he spent six months overseas studying other universities' investment practices. He revolutionised the way the University of Sydney conducted its investments and was responsible for a considerable increase in its income. He retired in 1986 and was later awarded an honorary Master of Economics. At 73 he received a graduate diploma in local and applied history at the University of New England. Ku-ring-gai Historical Society honoured him with its inaugural Historian of the Year award in 2003, and the Hornsby Shire Council conferred its Heritage Award the following year. Last year he was awarded the Mayor of Ku-ring-gai's Centenary Award for Outstanding Community Service. His first wife, Nancy, died in 2003. He is survived by his second wife, Susan, his children, John, Judith and David, and grand-daughters Alicia and Lauren. SMH article by Miranda Harman

Ian Watts

Jennie Ruming advised: Ian joined the CBC in 1941 at the age of 17. His first branch was Warwick in Qld followed by Moree and Woodenbong in NSW. Whilst at Woodenbong Ian joined the Air Training Corps and then the RAAF in 1943. This lead to a period of service in England flying in Lancaster Bombers as a wireless operator/air gunner until the end of WW2 when he returned to Australia and the CBC. Ian went on to marry his wife Margaret Rose Watts in 1951 and they were together for 60 years before Margaret died in 2011. Ian was manager at Bundarra, Woodenbong, Holbrook, Forbes and Maitland, all NSW branches, before retiring to Soldiers Point, Port Stephens in 1984. Ian and Margaret had a wonderful retirement at Port Stephens and their 3 children {Jenny, Michael and Andrew} and grandchildren have great memories of beach holidays at the house in Visa Avenue, Soldiers Point. Ian was a genuine CBC man for life. He accepted the merger with the National Bank but the CBC was the original and the best. As adults, we 3 children never discussed if we had defected to another bank.....we knew that he would take it a personal insult that we had left the NAB for an inferior financial institution. When Ian died his money was deposited in one place and one place only, the NAB of course. Ian always read the CBC newsletters and as he became more frail I read them to him. They were always a source of joy for him. Ian Watts noted that he was sorry to hear of the passing of Ted Hallman. He was on the staff at Warialda Branch in the early 1950's where Ted kicked off his career in the CBC. Ian ran into him several times later, and describes Ted as a gentleman. John Gall sent an email saying he was saddened to hear of the passing of his long time friend Ted Hallman in our last newsletter. John says "Ted and I attended Inverell High School together and were in the same years from 1949 to 1953 boarding together at the Inverell Boys Hostel which was a home away from home for many of us from the NorthWest of NSW. By shear coincidence, notwithstanding that our late fathers knew each other quite well, Ted and I both joined the old CBC Bank, Ted at Bingara and myself at Glen Innes. Interestingly although we both spent around 40 years in the bank our careers took us in different directions. Ted stayed in the bush for many years before transferring into the Sydney area later in his career whilst in my case I moved to the metropolitan area of Sydney in 1956. I am sure that there are many former colleagues who worked with Ted and have some war stories to tell about him". Frank Chapman wrote "It grieves me not being able to attend the meetings However I appreciate your newsletter each quarter but not when I read the list of deceased members. Ted Hallman would have joined the CBC when I was in Bingara for seven years. His family had properties there and were well known graziers.

Ian Williams

Ian Williams spoke at the June 05 meeting about Carney and the time he worked with him. Ian and Audrey Kenny attended the funeral in Yass. He stated Carney was the older twin of he and Tony, but was of the quieter nature. Carney was responsible for the introduction of the Branch Administrative Manual.

Jean BRETT

Margaret Powell: It is with much sadness I advise the sudden passing of our member Jean, the wife of Paul Brett. Jean joined the Bank on 1/1/1972 at London Office where she met Paul and true love brought them back to Australia where she worked as a typist in Head Office, City Relief & Regional Manager's Office. Jean and Paul had a very strong passion for cruising and Fred and I were fortunate to spend wonderful days cruising in their company.

Jim Hickey

Job Titles:
  • a Fine and Well Respected Colleague and Gentleman

Joan HARDMAN

Job Titles:
  • BOARD ( 27 / 5 / 2014 )
Des Leggett advised: "Sadly, I have to advise the passing away today of Joan Board nee Hardman. Joan would have been 95 next month. Joan had been in a nursing home at Lota (near Brisbane) for some years and had not enjoyed good health in recent years. Joan was well known to CBC staff through her involvement in the Health Society and would be remembered for her pleasant and cheerful character. Kay and I have very fond memories of Joan not only through the Bank but more so as a loved member of Kay's family.(Kay's mother and Joan were first cousins)."

John Armstrong ENGLAND

John Armstrong England (1911-1985), farmer and grazier, politician, and administrator of the Northern Territory, was born on 12 October 1911 at Clayfield, Brisbane, third of five children of New South Wales-born parents Sidney Willis England, accountant, and his wife Jane McLelland, née Fisher. Raised at Murwillumbah, New South Wales, John was educated at the local public school and at Brisbane Boys' College. He worked (1928-35) for the Commercial Banking Co. of Australia Ltd, in Sydney and at Forbes. In 1936-41 he managed Wilga, a sheep and wheat farm near Grenfell. On 16 December 1939 at Holy Trinity Church of England, Grenfell, he married Polly Wills Wheatley.

John Beer

Job Titles:
  • Officer
  • Retired Manager
John Beer advises: Richard Charles Graham Tandy's service is at St John the Baptist Church, Reid on 1st July. No flowers donations to Prostate Cancer Research & Support. Dick was an auditor who joined the bank around 1940, WWII 2/110 A.G.T. Platoon, retired about 1981. John Beer emailed: Russ was in Audit Department CBC Head Office 343 George Street Sydney about 1960s. Don Scott stated early May 2006 that Don thought Russ was the most senior person in CBC HO Audit. In those days (before Mr RG [Bob] Taylor) was appointed Chief Auditor, Audit reported to a Senior Inspector in HO, I think Mr Jim T McCloy. Bob Taylor retired from Chief Auditor of CBC just prior to the merged bank adopting short name as "National Australia Bank" as from 1 January 1983, when he was replaced by Mr JH (John) Cadet.

John Cotton

Job Titles:
  • Life Member

John Edward SEARLE

Ted was the best brother in-law that you could have. He was just what was needed for the staid Beaumont family with his quick wit and humour which never failed. He was always generous and made sure that the family functions were enjoyable. He was always interested in our progress within the bank and was always supportive. He will be dearly missed. John Searle was unable to fulfil his hopes of attending the June function, but wishes to record the following: Our paths crossed at an early date, without either of us knowing the other. Gladys and I were married at Parkes, and the Reception was held at the home of an Uncle of hers. In those far off days (1948), a means of communication, called Telegrams, was frequently used to convey good wishes to the Bride and Groom. Some of my friends knew I was in the CBC Bank, and that I was being married in Parkes, and they sent Telegrams - c/ CBC Bank. John Alpen was then Accountant at Parkes Branch, and he knew Gladys' Uncle, and was aware of the Nuptial Occasion . He obliged by delivering the Telegrams to the Uncle's address, but we didn't meet. It was not until about 1956 I think, that we did meet when I was Manager at Tottenham. John, by then 2 I/C CBC Savings Bank, was visiting Branches to see how we were handling this new fangled form of Banking. Later, some will remember, he succeeded Don McClymont as Savings Bank supremo, in which period he earned the nickname of "Mr Skippy", because of the style of Money Boxes introduced then. From that time at Tottenham, John took a close interest in my movements, but we did not work together until John succeeded Alan Bamford as Chief Manager in Victoria, and, from Manager Melbourne Office, I became his Assistant. In a recent Newsletter Noel Smith recalled his time in Melbourne with the two of us. From Melbourne I went to London, where Jack, having retired, and Barbara visited us. After our return to Australia, we were able to keep in touch, and we have happy memories of visiting them when they lived at Newport, and later at Bayview Gardens Retirement Village. Later, after Barbara's death, I can recall John giving us a report of the Olympic Games in Barcelona, to which he had made a special trip, because a Grandson was a member of the "Awesome Foursome". John and his son, George, built a home at Byron Bay, designed with a separate area for John, where I was able to visit him - by then I had retired, and Gladys and I visited the North Coast twice a year. to see a Brother and Sister of mine. John later moved to Queanbeyan to be near other Family, but unfortunately our communications after that were by telephone only. I'm sure that many Officers of my vintage will have happy memories of "Mr Skippy" - John, or Jack, as he was known to many.

John Gall

John Gall advised: I noted with a great deal of regret in your last news letter for the CBC Officers that John Searle had passed away in September. As I will not be able to attend the December 7 meeting would you please record my following message when respects are paid to John. i.e. ''John was my boss at Royal Exchange Branch where he was the Manager of what from 1966-69 was probably the largest Branch of the old CBC Bank. He had come there from Assistant Manager, Brisbane at short notice after the sudden death of the previous manager , Ron Gyngell. He was a fine christian gentleman, a great banker and a person you could learn a lot from as you moved on in your career. We kept in touch for many years but unfortunately whilst poor health dogged him he never lost his bright personable style and spent the last few years with his wife Glad in Belrose Village retirement home. "

John McIlveen

John McIlveen was saddened to learn of the passing of Bob Clement and Ted Hallman. John worked with Bob at Albury branch during the late 1950's and knew Ted during his Nowra days and later at the quarterly luncheons.

John Ness

Job Titles:
  • Manager
John Ness advises that Phil was the Manager of Banksure when he was doing the development work for it. Just before the first policy renewals were due to go out we had 27,000 policies coming up for renewal, so Systems prioritised Banksure as the next large project after ATMs. Phil was really good at his job, had a good sense of humour, and ensured that everything ran smoothly. He later transferred to ANZ Funds Management in a senior role after the merger. John NESS I was at London Office in 1972-74 with Des and Peter Beaumont. Attended his Service and lots of CBC and Golden Oldies people were there, including some I had not seen for years.

John P. RAMSAY

It is with sadness that I advise the sad passing of John who was a Life Member of our Club. John commenced service in the Bank on 02/01/1953. He served in nine Branches, several areas of Head Office , relieving staff and Staff Training. He left the Bank on 01/01/1976. Mike Hook has passed on the Club's deepest sympathy to John's wife, Judith. Bruce Southerden wrote: When I joined the bank on 13 October 1969 as Chief Manager, Marketing I was fortunate to have John Ramsay as my Second. As only the third "outsider" (after Bill Vout and David Smith) into what was then variously called "The Commercial of Sydney"; "The CBS" and CBC. Despite bringing some twelve years' of branch and HO experience from "the Wales" I had two initial tasks: navigating my way as clearly an "agent of change" (intended in my appointment by Management) and introducing a marketing culture which was not as widely embraced in those days as today.

John Roberts

John Roberts advised: John was a good bloke and I believe that he hasn't been well for yonks. I will be in contact with Sally in the near future. I spoke to JCG some time ago on the phone and he didn't sound very well at that time! I opened Belmont Branch and received instructions from the Divisional Inspector while I was at H.O. supposedly to be instructed in the opening of a Branch that I should contact JCG who was then Accountant at Newcastle Branch and let him know that although I was younger and had been selected to open Belmont, that he shouldn't be too concerned because he was more or less next on the list and would be very happy with his promotion.

He was Accountant at Dickson and Moree then first managerial appointment at Grenfell then followed Narrabri, Cooma, Casino and Murwillumbah where Keityh retired from on 13/7/1993. Keith was a very keen lawn bowler, a Level 1 Umpire, and Manager of the Casino Lawn Bowls team.

Ken Foulcher

Ken Foulcher was very sorry to read of the death of Geoff Border. Geoff Border, Jim Hickey and myself were Managers at Charleville, Cunnamulla and Quilpie respectively in the early 70's (Little New South Wales !!!! as it was known in those days). Geoff and I saw a great deal of each other in the 4 years we were in those 2 branches and on special occasions we used to play bowls together in Charleville. Geoff was transferred to Cowra in July '74 when I was also transferred at the same time to Murwillumbah.

Kenneth Errol

David Wyndham advised: It is with great regret that we advise the passing of our valued member Ken Smith on 5/10/2018. Ken was just 72 years of age and had suffered ill health for some years prior to his passing. Ken joined the bank on 4/12/1963 and retired on 1/7/1996. Ken spent his career with the bank in the country and after many country appointments managed branches at Leeton, Holbrook, Narrabri and Kiama. Noel Crowley

Noel Crowley spoke about his time working with John at Sydney university branch. Noel said the staff at Sydney University spent some 3 weeks trying to balance the Savings Bank ledgers on one occasion - looking for a 1d error which could not be found. In the finish John adjusted the balance of his personal account to make them balance with the General Ledger! Noel Crowley worked with John at Sydney University when staff spent three weeks trying to balance the Savings Bank ledgers so John adjusted his account by one penny to make them balance.

Ray KING

Ray died on 6 June after a long illness. Many ex CBC staff may remember him as a lecturer at the Fernleigh Castle management training sessions. After the amalgamation with NAB he became operations manager for Bankcard. Gone but not forgotten. Norma King

Richard David

Rowan Raymond-Jones advised 25/1/2019 "David Young was Manager Maintenance in Systems Division in the late seventies early eighties. At one stage I reported to David. He came to at least one luncheon but wasn't inclined to join the club. He was recovering from stomach cancer when I was talking with him last and was feeling quite unwell."

Richard Nott

Richard NOTT Stan Marshall was a long term fixture of London Office management team. He and Geoff Hastings were the quintessential "gentleman twins" who inspired me to adjust my more abrasive social demeanor (with limited success). Stan was a gentle epitome of those good and faithful servants, part of the cement of constancy that bound businesses together before they were overtaken by the mad-cap energies needed in the current headstrong competitive markets. It was a balming experience to have spent time with people such as Stan and learn that an occasional delayed sense of urgency is not such a bad thing. Suzanne WATSON Advice re Stan Marshall's passing is sad news and I have very fond memories of 'Mr Marshall' (as I always called him whilst working with him). In September 1973, I entered CBC (as it happened by mistake, as I actually had an interview appointment with The Commonwealth Bank of Australia located opposite CBC in 'Kangaroo Alley' namely Old Jewry) and, in those days as there was no security, I found myself being greeted by Harry Sweeney, Messenger for the 1st floor Management, and I realised my mistake. However, Mr Marshall came out of his office and met me then asked me to sit down and wait for the Personnel Manager (Mr Oakley) to see me as, coincidentally, their Senior Secretary at the time was pregnant and leaving CBC within a month. It was my lucky day when I met Stan Marshall, as I was immediately employed by CBC and spent 19 happy years with the Bank. My sympathies go to Moira and all Stan's family at this sad time. Richard Nott AM has requested to deliver a Eulogy. Having not known Sandra whilst in the service, I have had a close and very amicable association with her as we were both involved on Committee with the CBC Officers Club, over the past 5/6 years when she accepted the position of the Secretary. Sandra was a dedicated organiser and dutiful worker for her fellow CBCers. She always had a smile and a bright cheery greeting . She doggedly carried on, with the same confident and happy air, when her illness came on her. Sandra was not going to give in. Both Robyn and I are very saddened by her passing, but relieved that she suffers no longer. She is sadly missed. God blessed her. Richard Nott, is delivering a eulogy at Jack's service and will pass on the very deepest sympathies from all club members. In due course his eulogy will also be published on our website.

Scott Marnane, President NABROC advised: Members, it is with sadness that I advise of the recent passing of our member, Terry Smith; he was aged 87 years. Terry's health had been in decline recently and he passed away peacefully on Sunday. NABROC President Scott Marnane advised: Members, it is with great sadness that I advise of the recent passing of our Mid North Coast member, Marlene Rutledge; she was 80 years young. She was born in Ballina, to loving parents who were cane farmers, and she was the Teller at the CBC Ballina when Terry was posted there in the late 1950's. Marlene and Terry were married in Ballina, and this year celebrated 61years of marriage. Early this year Marlene received devastating news that she had developed a medical condition requiring immediate treatment. Despite a fierce determination, Marlene's condition could not be contained and surrounded by family, she passed away peacefully on September 1st. Scott Marnane (NAB Retired Officers Club) advised he got a brief note from Brendan Nelson that Kathleen had passed away. Scott MARNANE (NABROC) I am saddened to advise that Des passed away late last week. Des's 43 year career commenced in 1960 when he joined the CBC Bank. In the mid 1960's he was a Teller at Lane Cove branch and already identified as a committed and ambitious officer. Ray Knight advised that he worked with Des in CBC Brisbane Office in the mid 1970's. During Des's appointment in Accountant's Department in Brisbane Office he met Kay, later to become his wife. Ray fondly remembers that Kay sometimes babysat for Phyllis and him during their time in Brisbane. Des was an active member for many years in the CBC Golden Oldies Cricket Club and was awarded Life Membership in recognition of his services to the Club.

Sir Geoffrey BOWEN

Rowan Raymond-Jones advised: Sadly I have to inform you that Sir Geoffrey passed away on Sunday night 26th February, just four months short of his centenary which would have been on 23rd June. His son Phillip advises that a Memorial Service will be held at 1 pm on Tuesday 6/3/2012 at St John's Anglican Church, Cnr Pacific Highway and St John's Avenue Gordon.

Sir Robert CRIGHTON-BROWN

Robert Crichton-Brown was an able, energetic and ambitious businessman who rose to be chairman of the tobacco manufacturer Rothmans International. He came to wield considerable influence in his native Australia, but his early retirement in 1988 brought wider public attention. There was criticism in the press, including Tony Blair writing for The Times, of what seemed to be an excessive pay-off after fewer than four years in the job. Robert Crichton-Brown was born in Melbourne, the only son of Leslie Crichton-Brown and Kathleen Mendel Solomon Sr. He grew up in the suburb of Strathfield and was educated at Sydney Grammar School. The family company, Edward Lumley, was the oldest and largest insurance brokerage in Australia, having changed its name from Bennie S. Cohen which was believed to be the original family name. Crichton-Brown joined the Royal Artillery and later the General Staff. He fought in France, Iceland and India and was twice mentioned in dispatches. In London in 1941 he married Norah Isabelle T bull and took her back to Australia where he resumed his position with Lumleys. By 1952 he was managing director. He was chairman from 1974 and would be a director for more than half a century. In 1969 he was elected president of the Australian Institute of Directors. He was a passionate yacht racer. In 1967 he was a member of Australia's winning Admiral's Cup team on the Balandra and in 1970 he won the Sydney-to-Hobart yacht race on the beautiful Pacha. That year he was appointed CBE for services to yachting. In 1973 he turned his formidable attention to the federal Liberal Party, becoming its honorary treasurer until 1985. His term included the eight-year prime ministership of Malcolm Fraser. The community beckoned too. He sat on advisory boards for the Girl Guides and the Salvation Army; he was co-ordinator for the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme and a national councillor for the Scouts. He sat on the boards of a number of Australian banks and finance houses and, from 1979 to 1995; he was director of the Daily Mail and General Trust. He had been appointed director of Rothmans, Australia in 1971 and in 1981 became its chairman. This did not appear, at the time, incompatible with his role as president of the Medical Foundation of 'Sydney University or director of Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. Such was his success at Rothmans that he was appointed executive chairman of Rothmans International in 1985. Despite his colleagues' misgivings, he moved from Sydney to London where he would live for the rest of his life. He was knighted in 1972 and advanced to KCMG in 1980 His wife, after seven decades of marriage, died in 2011, and he is survived by their son and daughter.

Stephen Judd

Stephen Judd advised on 10/5/2019: My father Joe Judd passed on the 19/12/2015, just 6 months after my mother June Judd 5/6/2015. . They met working as tellers at the Marrickville bank.
