Alexei Borissov

& Developer I joined EPCC in November 2021. I have a background in Astrophysics having most recently come from doing a postdoc, and previously a PhD at the University of St Andrews working on Solar Physics. Interspersed with Solar Physics I also worked as a research software engineer with DiRAC primarily working on the SWIFT cosmology code. When not coding up physics models I enjoy cycling, Munro bagging and hanging out with my cat.

Role Data Science Applications Consultant I joined EPCC as a Data Science Application Developer in October 2020, and work on the DataLoch project. I completed my MBiochem degree in Biochemistry at the University of York in 2019. My Masters project focused on bioinformatics, using R and Linux tools to analyse RNA-seq data from neuroblastoma cell lines. Alongside my Masters studies, I completed an internship with Digital Creativity Labs and Arup, using R to tidy, analyse and visualise experimental data.

Role APPLICATIONS CONSULTANT I joined EPCC in 2014 to provide administrative support for HPC training courses and as one of the ARCHER helpdesk team. I graduated from University of Edinburgh with BSc Computer Science and worked as a systems and applications developer before moving into education where I worked as IT user support in schools and taught Computing Science in several high schools in Edinburgh and the Lothians.

Denis Barclay

Role SSI Communications Officer Denis joined EPCC and the Software Sustainability Institute in January 2023 as Communications Officer. He previously worked within the arts public relations field, contributing to the communication efforts of numerous events and festivals across Scotland and the UK, from Edinburgh's August festivals to the Birmingham 2022 Festival and many others. Denis graduated from Queen Margaret University with an MSc in Strategic Communications and Public Relations and a BA (Hons) in Public Relations and Media, which helped him develop strong communications skills in the charity, NGO, and activism fields. While at university he also pursued his passion for graphic design by exploring new ways to implement and evaluate visual communication.

Role Director of Teaching I am EPCC's Director of Teaching and the Programme Director for the University of Edinburgh's online Masters in Data Science, Technology & innovation. I am EPCC's Director of Teaching and the Programme Director for the University of Edinburgh's online Masters in Data Science, Technology & innovation. I joined in April 2003 as an Applications Consultant after completing a PhD in Computational Statistical Physics on the subject of Spin Glasses.Since 2003 I've been involved in a broad cross-section of EPCC's work, from commercial data mining to HPC simulations of fusion reactors. I've also been closely involved with EPCC's training and education activities. Recently, my work has concentrated more in the area of Data Science, and I've worked on projects related to data infrastructures, data management, data preservation and data-intensive computing. I began work at EPCC in August 2000 as a member of the ARTS (Academic Research Training Support) group. Some of my current and more recent projects that I have been involved in include: LSST, DEISA, the MSc in High Performance Computer Programming and HPC-Europa2.

Dr Evgenij Belikov

Evgenij joined EPCC in 2019 to work on the ASiMoV project with focus on profiling and tuning performance and scalability of large-scale multi-physics simulations, virtual certification, and Exascale Computing. Previously he worked on several DataLab projects with SMEs: using Machine Learning for catergorisation and tagging of financial transactions (with The IDCo) and using MATLAB Distributed Compute Server to optimise a financial backtesting pipeline (with Aberdeen Standard Investments). Evgenij holds a Dipl. Inf. from Humboldt University Berlin and a PhD in Computer Science from Heriot-Watt University, having worked on distributed sparse matrix multiplication and on improving dynamic scheduling using work stealing in a distributed runtime system for parallel Haskell. He is an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a certified Software and Data Carpentry instructor helping build the local Edinburgh Carpentries community.

Dr George Beckett

Role Programme Manager I am a PRINCE2-accredited project manager, with 13 years of experience from managing a wide range of software-engineering projects, working with both commercial and academic partners. I have worked at EPCC for 15 years, though during 2012--2015 I was on secondment to the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in Perth, Western Australia, where I held the position of Deputy Director and Head of Supercomputing.

Dr Jano van Hemert

Dr Jano van Hemert, FRSE is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh and a Senior Member of IEEE. He has worked in several universities and companies where he always collaborated at the interface of academia and industry. His main interest is in processing data to distil information into the knowledge required to drive positive impact. From 2022 to 2023, Dr van Hemert was an Applied Research Manager at the Amazon Development Centre Scotland in Edinburgh. From 2010 to 2022, he directed the research at Optos-a medical device company-where his team commercialised many novel hardware and software features for retinal imaging. From 2010 to 2023, he was an Honorary Fellow of the University of Edinburgh in recognition of his leadership in the research programme of the UK National e-Science Centre from 2006 to 2010, which was supported by a prestigious EPSRC Platform Grant. Before 2006, he held research associate and fellow posts at the National Research Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science of the Netherlands, The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research and the Vienna University of Technology. From 2005 until 2011 he was a visiting researcher at the Human Genetics Unit in Edinburgh of the UK's Medical Research Council. In 2022, Dr van Hemert was recognised as an IEEE Computer Society Distinguished Contributor. In 2018, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. In 2013, he was elevated to Senior Member of the IEEE. He obtained an MSc in computer science (1998) and a PhD in mathematics and physical sciences (2002) from Leiden University, The Netherlands.

Dr Julien Sindt

I graduated from the University of Leeds in 2012 with a Integrated B.Sc. and M.Phys. in Theoretical Physics, and followed this up with a Ph.D. in Computational Chemistry. Following a stint as a post-doctoral research assistant, I found my way into EPCC in 2019.

Role Teaching Fellow Ludovic joined EPCC in 2022 as a teaching fellow, where he is part of the teaching team for both on-campus and online versions of the MSc in High-Performance Computing and MSc in High-Performance Computing with Data Science, being also the course organiser for the "Advanced Message-Passing Programming" module and academic cohort lead.

Dr Mario Antonioletti

Role Software Architect I joined EPCC in 1995 as a training and education officer. Since then I have been involved in many academic and commercial projects at EPCC. I did a BSc in Mathematical Physics at Edinburgh, a Part Three at Cambridge and finally a Ph.D. at Cardiff. I am a PRINCE2 practitioner (since Dec 2014) and I am a STEM ambassador.

Dr Mark Bull

Role Senior Research Fellow I have been working at EPCC since 1998, mainly on the academic and HPC side of the Centre. Previously, I worked at the UK Met Office, and at the University of Manchester, where I also studied for a PhD in parallel numerical algorithms.

Dr Nick Brown

Role Senior Research Fellow I am interested in the role that novel hardware can play in future supercomputers, and am specifically motivated by the grand-challenge of how we can ensure scientific programmers are able to effectively exploit such technologies without extensive hardware/architecture expertise. My research combines novel algorithmic techniques for this new hardware, programming language & library design, and compilers. I am course organiser for the in-person and online Parallel Design Patterns MSc module and also supervise PhD students. In 2024 I will be undertaking a Royal Society of Edinburgh personal research fellowship exploring novel hardware for greener supercomputing.

Dr Oliver Brown

Role Chancellor's Fellow I joined EPCC in March 2018 after completing my PhD in Physics at Heriot-Watt University. During my PhD I developed software for calculating the stationary state of dissipative many-body quantum systems using matrix product states. Since joining EPCC, my work has mainly focused on programming models for heterogeneous exascale computing, particularly through my involvement in the INTERTWinE and EPiGRAM-HS Horizon 2020 projects.

Dr Paul Bartholomew

Role Architect I joined EPCC in November 2019 working on the ASiMoV project to develop the capability to simulate a full gas-turbine engine during operation. Prior to this I completed a PhD in Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London developing a fully-coupled solver for the two-fluid model of multiphase flows, followed by two post-doctoral positions in the aeronautics department funded through the ARCHER eCSE programme to extend the Incompact3d (now Xcompact3d) CFD code.

Dr Stephen Booth

I am currently the Principal Architect within the EPCC Applications Group. Most of my time is spent supporting the National HPC services run by EPCC. This includes research into Exascale computing and developing the SAFE administration and accounting software. I graduated from New College Oxford in Physics, in the summer of 1987. And completed my PhD (also in Physics) at Edinburgh University in 1992. I have been heavily involved with parallel computing since I arrived in Edinburgh in 1987, both in the Physics Department and later in EPCC.

She has previously worked for the Edinburgh Centre for Robotics and the School of Engineering, as well as in the publishing sector in Mexico and Scotland.
