Laurence G. Hanscom a pilot, aviation enthusiast, State House reporter for the Worcester Telegram Gazette, and namesake of Hanscom Air Force Base and Hanscom Field was killed in a plane crash while performing stunt maneuvers over marshland in Saugus on February 9, 1941.

William Hathorne was a prosperous businessman in early Salem, and became its commanding character of the time period. He led troops to victory in King Philip's War, served as a magistrate on the highest court, and was chosen as the first speaker of the House of Deputies. He was a zealous advocate of the personal rights of freemen against royal emissaries and agents.
William Hathorne, was a reflection of the society in which he lived. For example, he had Quakers whipped in the streets of Salem.
President William Howard Taft rented a house for the summer White House from Mrs. Maria Evans in Beverly; in the summers of 1909 and 1910, he lived in a house located at what is now the site of the Italian Garden in Lynch Park, the city's principal public park and in 1911 and 1912 he rented a different house, a mile away, "Parramatta" from Mrs. Robert Peabody. Beverly Hills, California, was named in 1907 after Beverly Farms in Beverly because Taft vacationed there.
