Native of Newburgh, New York, Thomas S. Marvel studied at Dartmouth College and the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, where he received a Masters Degree in Architecture. He worked with R. Buckminster Fuller and the IBEC Housing Corporation before settling in Puerto Rico in 1959, where he has practiced architecture since. He has taught at the School of Architecture at the University of Puerto Rico and lectured at schools throughout the US on the topic of tropical architecture. As a member of the NAAB (National Architecture Accreditation Board), he has also been involved in the Accrediting Committee for various architecture schools around the globe. His practice has encompassed architecture and urban design and he has done projects in the Caribbean and Central America as well as Puerto Rico.
