MORELAND VETERINARY HOSPITAL - Key Persons

Dr. Annie Freeman

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Annie Freeman to the team at Moreland Veterinary Hospital.

Dr. Bob Bruno

Dr. Bob Bruno shares the same passion for animals. He worked for a zoo for three years before deciding to join a circus to continue working with exotic animals. His stint with the circus solidified his interest in working with animals and he decided to enter veterinarian school. He graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988. Part of his senior year was spent at Oklahoma State where he met his future wife, Dr. Kay. Upon graduation, he worked for a small Ft. Lauderdale animal hospital for eight years. Prior to their move to Portland, Dr. Bob and his wife had never had the opportunity to work together. Opening Moreland Veterinary Hospital fulfilled his dream of having a family-oriented practice in a charming Portland neighborhood.

Dr. Catherine Hawn

In veterinary expertise, Dr. Catherine Hawn focuses on soft tissue surgery, dentistry, and ophthalmology. Behavior, and more. Known for its compassionate approach, Dr. Hawn treats patients like family, prioritizing their comfort and well-being. She is collaborative and thorough and ensures pet parents have the knowledge and tools for optimal care. Beyond the clinic, Dr. Hawn enjoys tending to yard and house plants, engaging in beading, and embarking on outdoor adventures like camping, biking, and hiking. A dedicated pet parent to a collie named Bailey, four cats, a rabbit, and a couple of snakes, Dr. Hawn's diverse fur family reflects a deep love for animals that extends to a 35+-year-old three-toed box turtle named Shelby.

Dr. Dawn Balcom

Dawn grew up in Los Angeles and had various pets throughout her childhood, including a dog, rabbits, fish, and parakeets. She earned her B.S. and M.S. in mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley and UCLA, and it wasn't until a few years later that she finally found her true calling in animal welfare and veterinary medicine. She graduated from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine, and she loved it so much in Oregon that she decided to start her career in Portland. She truly values the significance of the human-animal bond and sincerely enjoys working with clients and their furry family members to find solutions together to healthy pets and happy people. Dawn lives with her husband, Jon, their Lhasa Apso, a Pitbull mix named Norman, and a cat named Sundance. In her free time, she loves camping, hiking, snowboarding, and playing board games.

Dr. Kay Bruno

Dr. Kay Bruno has been surrounded by animals all of her life. Her parents maintained acreage complete with goats, horses, rabbits, and chickens. At a very early age, Dr. Kay Bruno's passion for animals (and a knack for math and science) drove her to pursue a career in veterinary services. Dr. Bruno graduated from Oklahoma State University School of Veterinary Medicine in 1988, where she met her husband and future family business partner. She initially practiced at a mixed animal vet in South Florida, ranging from small animals to horses. Her background in extensive vet facilities with multiple Veterinarians provided exposure to various feral and domesticated animals. The Dr. and her husband moved to Portland in 1996 to start a family and search for the perfect location for their practice. She found the small-town neighborhood feel of the Sellwood/Westmoreland area to be an ideal fit. It opened its doors in 1998. Today, its Bruno family consists of two beautiful children, two dogs, one cat, a bird, a tortoise, one fish tank, and, of course, Moreland Veterinary Hospital.
