Aidan Tattley

Job Titles:

Aidan specialises in property, general commercial and banking, and public works law. His experience includes leasing, subdivisions, due diligence, re-financing, mortgagee sales, acquisition and disposal of property, compulsory acquisitions and entitlements under the Public Works Act 1981. He strives to assist with achieving pragmatic solutions/outcomes to all matters, with attention to detail and legal imperatives, balanced with a client's commercial objectives. He has also been seconded to, and worked with, one of the leading advisers in the land compensation space. Aidan is also a keen fisherman and diver, and former hockey representative. Aidan was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2018.

DASHA KOVALENKO-GORMACK

Dasha specialises in property and commercial law. She advises a broad range of clients on issues such as acquisition, development and sale of residential and commercial property, due diligence, subdivisions, leasing, refinancing, design-build and lease arrangements, and construction transactions. Having worked as in-house counsel for an international health care group and one of New Zealand's largest sport governing bodies, Dasha understands business. Her commercial experience includes contract review, risk and compliance, governance, delivery of major events, private mergers, acquisitions, intellectual property, and employment law. Dasha was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2012 and is an Associate member of the Institute of Directors. She is fluent in Russian.

Deanna Clark

Property development has been a recurring theme in Deanna's 19-year career. Now specialising in property and commercial matters, she has worked on development and construction, subdivisions, due diligence and acquisitions, commercial leasing, and property finance. She spent nine years working in the real estate teams of multinational law firms in London, undertaking complex, high quality development work. She has also been involved in significant developments around New Zealand, including purchase of rural land for redevelopment, large scale subdivisions, office tower refurbishments and leasing.

DeAnne Brabant

DeAnne is an experienced litigation lawyer and heads the employment team at Shieff Angland. Prior to joining Shieff Angland, DeAnne was a barrister, and before that worked for IRD and WorkSafe, appearing as counsel in both criminal prosecutions and civil cases. DeAnne's litigation experience includes appearances in various jurisdictions including the Environment Court, Family Court, Employment Court, District Court, High Court and Court of Appeal. In addition, DeAnne is skilled in investigating employment matters and complaints, mediation, crisis management, advising on policy, regulatory practice, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance. Having been employed previously by regulators, DeAnne has specialist expertise in managing and resolving client's compliance issues. In addition to her employment and health and safety work DeAnne has experience in managing complex expert evidence. Some recent cases in the employment and resource management space are NZTG v Engage Technology (a restraint of trade case) and Greater Wellington Regional Council v Adams & Ors (a resource management case where the Court rejected enforcement action and awarded indemnity costs to the parties). DeAnne is client focused and prides herself on providing practical solutions to legal problems. DeAnne is the author of Westlaw's ‘Protecting Employees' and ‘Health and Safety Law' packages. Emma Liu

Since her early post-university training in the city of Shanghai, Emma has traversed successful careers in financial services, marketing and property portfolio investment. Her stock market analysis was so popular that she once hosted her own radio show. She later became a marketing director of one of China's largest network-based manufacturers and distributors of healthy products. Her cross-cultural awareness has been instrumental in helping her to gain an in-depth knowledge of Asian practice development. Emma's experience in the dual disciplines of accountancy and marketing give her valuable insight in helping our lawyers provide concise, tailored and timely advice.

Jack Angland

Jack Angland joined the firm in 1959 and remained a partner until his death in 1990. In that time Jack established an enviable reputation for personal and professional integrity with a wide range of clients.

Jessica Belgrave

Jessica's two specialties are property and commercial law. Her expertise in property law encompasses property development, leasing, subdivision, due diligence, funding, acquisitions, and disposals of commercial property. As a member of our commercial team, she advises clients on issues such as business acquisitions, commercial contracts, corporate governance, and regulatory compliance. Jessica advised on consumer law during a secondment to a client in the food manufacturing sector, and she also spent time as a legal advisor for a computer software company in London. She was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2012.

John Kearns - CEO

John has been the firm's managing partner since 2007 and leads our commercial and property teams. His commercial focus is on business structures and strategies, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, commercial contracts, and compliance. He is also experienced in advising charities and other not-for-profit organisations. John's property work covers the commercial, industrial, and retail sectors. He advises on ownership structures, acquisitions and disposals, due diligence undertakings, funding, subdivision, leasing, and construction. John works closely with practice director Rachel Holland to develop and implement the firm's strategies and ensure the teams have the resources they need to deliver the desired results for our clients. John and Rachel are also responsible for implementing appropriate technologies and systems. John was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1982. He holds several external directorships, memberships in property industry groups, and voluntary roles.

Kalev Crossland

Kalev heads our litigation and employment teams. He has 30 years of proven, widely based experience as an advocate, adviser, published author and lecturer in business law. He appears regularly in the High Court, the Court of Appeal, and has successfully appeared in the Supreme Court as senior counsel and in overseas courts. Kalev and/or his team regularly appear in other courts and tribunals including the Employment Relations Authority, Building Disputes Tribunal and Taxation Review Authority as wells as in arbitrations. He has negotiated numerous out of court settlements directly or via mediation/judicial settlement conferences. Kellie was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1995 and as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 2004.

Rachel Holland

Rachel's measure of a job well done is when staff, clients and suppliers have a positive experience with Shieff Angland. She is responsible for operational matters such as information technology, human resources, finance, and business development. Rachel has worked in law firm management for 10 years and was previously the director of an engineering business. Providing excellence in service is her key focus. Rachel is actively involved in the Auckland Association of Legal Administrators, Australasian Legal Practice Management Association and LegalTech NZ. She has a keen interest in the future of law.

Raymond Huo

Raymond is the founding trustee of the New Zealand Chinese Language Week Charitable Trust, a Kiwi-driven initiative designed to increase Chinese language learning in New Zealand. The first of its kind in any Western country, NZCLW seeks to bridge the cultural and linguistic knowledge gap between China and New Zealand. Qualified in statute law in China and case law in New Zealand, Raymond has broad experience in local and international transactions and has a keen interest in Overseas Investment Act-related due diligence, property, commercial and trust law. He is an honorary professor of law at his alma mater, China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing. He has published nine books, including The Power of the Rule of Law - Navigating established common law cases《法之力》(Beijing 2019), a book designed for Chinese judges, lawyers and businesspeople. With Dr Wayne Mapp, he is co-editor of the bilingual guide Doing Business in New Zealand - information and advice from leading experts, to be released in mid-2021.

Richard Hatch

Richard is a commercial and property specialist advising clients on acquisition, development and divestment of commercial property, including due diligence, subdivisions, leasing, construction and joint ventures. He heads our mortgage recoveries division and his practice encapsulates general commercial law, sports law, and trust matters. Richard is an active member of several property industry groups. Richard was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 1997 and as a Solicitor of the Supreme Court of England and Wales in 2003.

Shan Langston

Shan is a commercial litigator who has acted for clients in tortious, contractual, relationship property, media and intellectual property matters. She has appeared as counsel in the District Court and High Court and as junior counsel in the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. Shan was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2004.

Tony SUNG

Tony specialises in employment and trademark laws and provides advice to employees as well as national and multinational employers. He has experience advising government agencies, corporates, trusts and institutions on all aspects of the employment relationship. He graduated Master of Laws from the National University of Singapore as a Prime Minister's Scholar. Tony was admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand in 2009 and the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia, in 2011.
