He even extended his knowledge further by studying for two years into investigating hearing regeneration! Finishing his clinical training with a two-year prestigious fellowship at the Michigan Ear Institute, he then went on to change the lives of many people at one of the busiest ear surgery programs in the country. Since then, Dr. Slattery is proud to call himself a Utahn and has since performed many cochlear implants. As an ear surgeon at House of Hearing, he deals with many patients in the clinic and operates for ear conditions, including hearing loss and balance. His favorite part of the job is helping patients with hearing loss to overcome their barriers. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling, mountain biking, fly fishing, skiing, and cooking.

Shailee Checketts

Job Titles:
  • Patient Care Coordinator
Growing up in Riverton, Shailee is proud to be serving patients across Northern Utah during her role at the Patient Care Coordinator. While each day is different, she mainly spends her time answering the phone, scanning documents, and problem solving. She loves the variety that her role offers. Although serving patients is her favorite part, she loves being able to learn and grow inside of the company. The best part is that she's a part of a big family! Personally, her favorite phone calls are the ones with patients who really need answers. For example, they may be struggling to get their devices working, and she enjoys taking the time to brainstorm and come up with a solution for them. For Shailee, it's the best feeling when she can help them with just a simple phone call. Outside of work, she loves being outdoors, including activities such as camping, hunting, fishing, four-wheeling, and boating.

Shayla Mertin

Job Titles:
  • Chief Administrator
Shayla grew up in Riverton, Utah and went to Riverton High School. At the start of her studies, she gained a bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. However, it wasn't long until she was opened up to the world of audiology, where her admiration only grew further. As chief administrator at the House of Hearing, she is responsible for many aspects. From scheduling our calendar to helping others, administrative tasks, and executive committee duties, she is a key part of our growing team. Not only this, but she is also the manager at our Draper location, where she continues to reign much success. While she loves to serve patients across Northern Utah, most of all, she loves the people she works alongside. Personally, Shayla has seen the effects hearing loss can have on a loved one and loves to witness their new quality of life. In one particular circumstance, she had a cochlear implant patient who was struggling with his implant and no longer wanted to wear it. His mom called in upset and wished he hadn't gone through with the surgery. Recognizing their struggles, Shayla decided to schedule him with our second cochlear implant audiologist. From there, she adjusted and fixed his CI, and he was so happy that he couldn't believe the difference. His mom called and left Shayla a voicemail expressing how thankful she was for listening and getting the treatment her son needed! It was an emotional moment. When Shayla isn't changing lives, she loves spending time with her husband and two children. She also loves the outdoors, including camping and hunting.
