Dr. Akhil Raina

Akhil is a qualified lawyer in Dehli, India. He specializes in all aspects of international trade law, with a focus on WTO and dispute-settlement. Prior to joining VVGB, Akhil worked with a legal organisation in Geneva on international trade matters, and advised two government ministries on economic law and policy. Before that, he interned with the WTO, as well as with law firms and government institutions working in trade law in India. Currently, he is also a Marie Curie Fellow at KU Leuven, and an editorial board member for NLIU International Trade Law Journal (India). He has authored and presented many papers on WTO law and policy, and taught WTO law as a moot court coach, and teaching-assistant to professors, in India and Belgium. Akhil is fluent in English, Hindi and Kashmiri. Akhil Raina works in the field of international economic law and policy, with a specialization in international trade law. His practice focuses on trade remedies and WTO dispute-settlement. Dr. Akhil Raina is an associate at VVGB. He is a qualified lawyer in India, and works in the field of international economic law and policy. Akhil represents governments and companies in anti-dumping, anti-subsidy and safeguard investigations in Europe and Asia. he represents governments in FTA and WTO disputes. He has worked in sectors including industrial, consumer and high-tech products. Akhil is alo involved in academia, having previously taught international trade law in India and Belgium. His works have been published in the Cambridge International Law Journal, the Journal of World Trade, the Global Trade and Customs Journal, and the Indian Journal of International Economic Law. he regularly coaches university students for the ELSA / John H. Jackson moot court competition, and has been a mentor with the legal NGO, TradeLab. He is also an editorial board member for the NLIU International Trade Law Journal (India). Previously, Akhil worked with law-firms and government institutions in New Delhi; and with the WTO and a legal organization in Geneva. He also previously advised two government ministries on economic law matters. Akhil holds bachelor's degrees in science and law from National Law University, Jodhpur (India), and a master's degree in international economic law and policy (IELPO LLM) from Universidad de Barcelona (Spain). In 2022, he received his PhD in international law from KU Leuven (Belgium), as a Marie Curie Fellow. His dissertation, on compliance with WTO rulings, was unanimously passed by the doctoral jury, without changes (best possible outcome). He is fluent in English, Hindi and Kashmiri and can speak basic Dutch.

Marco Slotboom

Marco Slotboom specialises in EU and Dutch competition law as well as general EU law and international trade law. Marco Slotboom has registered (European) administrative law and economic regulatory law (competition law) as principal legal practices in the Netherlands Bar register (for which he is required to obtain ten training points per calendar year). Mr. Slotboom does not have a Dutch ‘Stichting derdengelden'. Mr Slotboom is co-chairman and lecturer of the Grotius course on competition law, a post doctorate course organized by law faculties of Dutch universities. Mr. Slotboom is a regular speaker at conferences on competition law and state aid. He has written a large number of publications on EU and Dutch competition law, EU State aid law and international trade law.

Peter Kugel

Peter Kugel is a specialist in Environmental, Health & Safety Risk Regulation and has a broad EU Regulatory & Litigation practice in environment, chemicals, food and drug law. He is a partner in the EU, Trade & Competition team. Peter Kugel has registered (European) administrative and sanctions/enforcement law and economic regulatory law (free movement and market access conditions) as principal legal practices in the Netherlands Bar register (for which he is required to obtain ten training points per calendar year). Mr. Kugel does not have a Dutch ‘Stichting derdengelden'.

Peter Verhaeghe

Peter Verhaeghe is the managing partner of VVGB Advocaten / Avocats. His areas of expertise include corporate, corporate finance, contract and tax law. He has extensive industry related experience and knowledge in the biotech, pharmaceutical, consumer products, retail and media sectors of the economy. Mr. Verhaeghe has acted as lead counsel for direct investment, private placements, public offerings, project finance and privatization projects in various countries, including Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Azerbaijan, Russia, Morocco and the United States of America. Mr. Verhaeghe has published in various publications on a variety of Belgian and international corporate and tax issues. He was a member of the board of editors of Fiscale Actualiteit, a major Belgian tax periodical published by Wolters Kluwer België N.V. He is a member of the Legal and Taxation Committee of the American Chamber of Commerce in Brussels. Mr. Verhaeghe is a member of the Brussels Bar, the International Bar Association and the International Fiscal Association. He has acted in 1998 and 1999 as the national reporter for Belgium on tax developments for the International Bar Association.
