  • Assistant at Woodward and Company
  • Senior Legal Assistant
Sasha, a legal assistant at Woodward and Company, brings a strong background in social work counselling and paralegal work to her current role, within which she's deeply committed to providing clients with the highest quality of work possible. Though she now lives on the island, Sasha grew up in Toronto and spent time living in Calgary. She attended Humber College's Social Service Worker program and graduated with honours, furthering her education at York University where she earned a Bachelor of Social Work. She then went back to attend Humber College again, this time as a student in the Law Clerk program, from which she graduated with honours. Her social work role saw her providing meaningful support to marginalized women and children. From there, she pivoted her career towards law and began working as a legal assistant and law clerk/paralegal specializing in patents for national and international firms. A diligent and eager member of the team, her current position at Woodward and Company centers around the creation and maintenance of corporations, and assisting in the day to day needs of the firm's corporate lawyers with solicitor work. Outside of work, Sasha is interested in camping, hiking, gardening, intersectional feminism, anti-oppression, and most importantly, patio season. One day, she'd like to have a large farm or acreage where she can adopt all - yes, every single one - of the abandoned and neglected animals in the world. In her role as a lawyer at Woodward and Company, Jane has worked on matters pertaining to specific claims, reserve land tenure issues, and wills and estates. In doing so, she brings her years of experience in communications, writing, and education to each of her cases and client relationships. A born and raised Victoria local, Jane first joined the firm as a student in 2015 and later returned as an articled student in 2017. Before being called to the bar in the fall of 2018, she was a freelance writer and editor, and worked for the city of Vancouver during its Year of Reconciliation in 2013-2014. Before her legal career, Jane attended high school (in part) at Li Po Chun United World College of Hong Kong. She then studied at Mount Allison for undergrad, where she majored in English and minored in history and women's studies; and she went to law school at UVic. She holds a certificate in editing from Simon Fraser and a certificate in Aboriginal studies from Langara College in Vancouver. With a strong background in communication, Jane is passionate about providing plain language legal materials to make the law more accessible to its users. She believes in working collaboratively with clients to craft relevant, durable solutions to complex problems. Her work is motivated, above all, by the desire to support Indigenous peoples to thrive on their own terms. As partner at Woodward and Company, Drew has consistently driven the firm to excel in planning and executing business development strategies. His primary areas of practice are resource law, business associations, tax, trusts, contracts, and strategic implementation of Aboriginal rights and title strategies. Drew began working with the firm in January of 2004 as a co-op student and became partner at Woodward and Company by 2013. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in literature from the University of Victoria and a Master of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia. Drew's current practice focuses on strategic negotiations between First Nations, other governments, and resource companies. Across the entire spectrum of his work, he's determined to see Canada, provincial and territorial governments honour the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, re-establishing First Nations' control over decisions that impact their traditional lands. Outside of his practice in the firm, Drew has acted as a Director of the Victoria Cool Aid Society, and is a Past Chair of the CBA Vancouver Island Aboriginal Law Section. In his role as a lawyer at Woodward and Company, Chris' work centres around governance and land management. Since 2011, he has worked extensively with First Nations on land management and development issues. Chris is originally from Winnipeg but grew up in Mississauga and Dallas, Texas. Bolstered by a bachelor's degree in political science, he earned his law degree from the University of Texas and a masters in Indigenous governance from the University of Victoria. He was called to the BC and Yukon bars in 2020.
