Jonathan Amory

Jonathan Amory was born in Dublin in c.1653. He was a merchant by trade and became a wealthy and respected businessman while still in his early 20s. It was through his entrepreneurial skills that in 1675 he succeeded in obtaining a grant from King Charles II and the then Lord Mayor of Dublin of a substantial portion of land on the north side of the river Liffey running from O'Connell Street to Capel Street. This became known as the "Amory Grant" and signified the first real development of the City of Dublin as we know it today. Having amassed considerable wealth in Dublin, Jonathan Amory subsequently emigrated to the United States of America where he pursued a distinguished career in law and politics, becoming Senator for the State of North Carolina. In 1698 he was one of the signatories to the First American Bill of Rights and he ended his days as a judge in America's first Court of Admiralty. In the 350 years since Jonathan Amory was born there have been enormous changes in every aspect of commercial life but not the need for sound legal advice. Today, the combined experience of almost 100 years of legal practice and support enables lawyers and staff at Amorys to continue in the footsteps of Jonathan Amory and provide a first-class efficient and cost-effective service coupled with the personal care and attention we give to all our clients. Since Jonathan's time the quill and ink have long since been replaced by modern office equipment and somewhat speedier communication methods. Here at Amorys, our motto has always been Experience Counts!
