EMERGING WRITERS - Key Persons

Leah Miranda Hughes puts her shoes on to cross the Mason-Dixon Line. She earned degrees in English and American Literature from Oglethorpe University and Georgia State University, and an MFA in Creative Writing from Queens University, Charlotte. Leah contributed the new fiction section for the 3rd edition of Emerging Writers.

Merlene J. Purkiss (M.Ed., Nova University), has more than 20 years experience in teaching college prep writing students. In this textbook, she has adapted some of her most effective teaching strategies and concepts from the classroom and writing lab. Starting her instructional career as writing lab and English instructor at Miami Dade College since 1978, she brings the advantage of working with both native and foreign students, mainly Hispanic, who have had to overcome learning delays and language issues. In creating this book, she has listened and learned from her students about the method and information that writing students need most. Thus, here you have it, a book created with you in mind.
