White Oak Wood

White oak is a hard and heavy wood with a medium-bending and crushing strength, low in stiffness, but very good in steam-bending. White oaks (Quercus genus) are a plentiful hardwood in our Eastern and Southern forests. White oak tends to be a light beige through brown, while red oak has pinkish and reddish hues instead. Has moderately high shrinkage values, resulting in mediocre dimensional stability, especially in flatsawn boards. Can react with iron (particularly when wet) and cause staining and discoloration. Responds well to steam-bending. Glues, stains, and finishes well. white oak represents an exceptional value to woodworkers. It's no wonder that the wood is so widely used in cabinet and furniture making.
