Founding partner, Sumeet Kachwaha figures in Band One of the arbitration section of Chambers Global and also of Chambers Asia Pacific from 2009 onwards and as a "Leading Individual" in Asia-Pacific Legal 500 in the Dispute Resolution category. Sumeet Kachwaha is a ‘highly qualified litigator', and the ‘organised and very responsive'. Senior associate Tara Shahani is also recommended for her ‘proficient and diligent work'." Mr. Kachwaha's practice focuses on corporate commercial laws, infrastructure projects, litigation and arbitration. He figures in Band One in the arbitration section in Chambers Global and also in Chambers Asia Pacific from 2009 onwards. He also figures in Who's Who International in five sections: Arbitration; Construction; Procurement; Government Contracts and Asset Recovery. Mr. Kachwaha figures as a "Leading Individual" in the Dispute Resolution section of the Asia Pacific Legal 500. He also ranks in IBLJ's "A List" of "India's Top 35 Lawyers". He has handled landmark litigation including the Union Carbide (Bhopal Gas Leak) case, where he worked directly under the team leader Mr. F.S. Nariman. This keenly contested case was then the largest damages action ever in the world. Mr. Sumeet Kachwaha has also appeared as an expert witness on Indian law in landmark matters before the Courts of England & Singapore. Appointed amicus curiae by the High Court of Delhi in the Vodafone - India Bilateral Investment treaty dispute arbitration (decision of the court dated 7th May, 2018 generously acknowledges Mr. Kachwaha's assistance). Mr. Sumeet Kachwaha's academic writings have been referenced by the Law Commission of India in its Report dated February 2015 [Supplementary to Report No. 246 on Amendments to Arbitration and Conciliation Act, 1996]

Ms. Vanita Kakar

Ms. Kakar heads the Mumbai office of the firm. She worked for about 24 years with a premier Government of India Undertaking - the National Textile Corporation (Maharashtra North) as Head, Legal Department. After an illustrious stint involving handling of significant and high stake matters for the Corporation, Ms. Kakar took voluntary retirement to join Kachwaha & Partners‘ Mumbai office (in 2004). The National Textile Corporation (Maharashtra North) has 18 Manufacturing Units in Mumbai and Western India region. As Head, Legal Department, Ms. Kakar oversaw a portfolio of about 2000 legal matters covering a wide span of corporate, labour, employment, commercial, debt recovery, property, tenancy, contracts, banking and other civil matters. In addition she has conducted several internal enquiries/ disciplinary proceedings.

Tara Shahani

Ms. Shahani graduated from Amity Law School, IP University, Delhi and was allotted a first division rank by the University. She enrolled as a lawyer in 2009. Her practice focuses on arbitration and litigation. Over the past few years she has been involved in several high stakes construction and infrastructure matters, international commercial arbitrations, criminal cases as well as tax matters.
