Aliza Leventhal

Aliza Leventhal is the librarian and archivist for Sasaki, an interdisciplinary design firm. In addition to making the firm's historical projects available, she proactively engages designers and technical professionals to better understand the features, workflows, and challenges that digital design files pose for long-term access. She is the co-founder and chair of the Society of American Archivist's CAD/BIM Taskforce, through which she leads research and advocacy efforts with fellow archivists around digital design files and software. Focused on expanding visual and technical literacy for design and architectural archivists, her research aims to lower the barriers for archivists to engage with digital design records.

Andrew Witt

Andrew Witt is an Assistant Professor in Practice in Architecture at the GSD, teaching and researching in the cultural relationship of science and design. He is also co-founder, with Tobias Nolte, of Certain Measures, a Boston/Berlin-based office for design science. He was previously Director of Research at Gehry Technologies and a director at GT's Paris, France office, where he solved complex geometric challenges for clients including Gehry Partners, Ateliers Jean Nouvel, UN Studio, and Coop Himmelb(l)au. His research on the relationship between scientific epistemologies and design has been recognized with a Fellowship at the Canadian Centre for Architecture and Graham Foundation grant. He has lectured widely, including at Yale, Princeton, MIT, The Bartlett, The Berlage, Stanford, UCLA, Berkeley, ETH, and EPFL, and his research has been published in in venues such as Log, AD, Surface, Space, Linear Algebra and its Applications, and Linear and Multilinear Algebra. He received an M.Arch (with distinction, AIA medal, James Thayer Scholarship, Frederick Shelden Travelling Fellowship) and an M.Des (History and Theory, with distinction) from the GSD.

Ann Whiteside

Ann Whiteside is Librarian/Assistant Dean for Information Services at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. The focus of her work is re-envisioning the 21st century library, including expanding the creation of and access to digital information in close collaboration with scholars, and the use of technology to support teaching and research. Her current work is focused on three areas of preservation: digital design data, web archiving, and AV materials. She is the PI for an IMLS grant (Building for Tomorrow) to develop a roadmap that outlines a shared infrastructure for the preservation and dissemination of electronic architectural documentation.

Dennis Shelden

Dennis Shelden is director of the Digital Building Lab and an associate professor in the School of Architecture at Georgia Tech. An expert in applications of digital technology to building design, construction and operations, his experience spans across research, technology development, professional practice and entrepreneurship including multiple architecture, building engineering and computing disciplines. Prior to joining Georgia Tech he co-founded and was CTO of Gehry Technologies - a technology software development and professional consulting company focused on digital practice advancement. He served as Director of R&D and Director of Computing for Gehry Partners, and was Associate Professor of Practice in the Design & Computation program at MIT. He is a licensed Architect and holds a BS in Architectural Design, an MS in Civil & Environmental Engineering, and a PhD in Design & Computation from MIT.

Elizabeth Lorang

Elizabeth Lorang is an Associate Professor and Humanities Librarian in the University Libraries at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She is also a Faculty Fellow in the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities at UNL. Her professional interests and research areas include digital humanities and digital scholarship, academic libraries, American poetry, and nineteenth-century American newspapers. She is the co-PI of Image Analysis for Archival Discovery, an NEH-funded project that seeks to leverage the information potential of digital images for discovery in digitized collections. Euan Cochrane

Euan brings a wealth of practical knowledge and experience on digital preservation developed from a diverse range of positions he has held including working on the establishment of the data archive for official statistics at Statistics New Zealand, working in the Digital Continuity team at Archives New Zealand and consulting for Deloitte in Australia on Information Management. In his current role as Digital Preservation Manager at Yale University Library, he established digital preservation services through Preservica and Emulation as a Service. He has a particular interest in software preservation and the use of emulation to maintain access to born digital content and is currently involved in grant funded work in both of these areas and is on the Governance group for the Software Preservation Network.

Greg Schleusner

Greg Schleusner, AIA is a Principal and Director of Design Technology Innovation at HOK. In this role, he guides the firm in researching and adopting new technologies ranging from data management to computational design. Greg is also active within buildingSMART; he currently serves as the Director of buildingSMART Initiatives for BIMForum. He is also the leader of the Technical Room within buildingSMART International where he is driving the development of an Open Source IFC toolkit and the development of a larger technical roadmap for buildingSMART. Jessica Meyerson

Jessica Meyerson serves the mission and members of the Software Preservation Network - a role that allows her to promote the essential role of software preservation in responsible and effective digital stewardship. As Research Program Officer for Educopia Institute, Jessica provides support for applied research that informs our understanding and advances practice. She received her Masters of Information Science from the University of Texas at Austin with specializations in digital preservation and archives. As a former digital archivist at the University of Texas at Austin, Jessica continues to build on her experience working across institutions, communities, and sectors to ensure long-term, meaningful access to cultural heritage.

Katie Pierce Meyer is a librarian, archivist and architectural historian specializing in twentieth-century American architecture. Prior to accepting her position as librarian in 2014, she preserved and described archival collections at the Alexander Architectural Archives. She is currently completing a PhD in the UT School of Information, where her dissertation research explores the artifacts of contemporary architectural practice.

Kit Arrington

Kit Arrington is a Digital Library Specialist in the Prints & Photographs Division at the Library of Congress where she is a project coordinator for the digitization of multiple formats of material including the architectural, design and engineering collections. She is a participant in the development of internal and external best practices for conversion and digital preservation including the Library of Congress' Recommended Formats Statement and the Federal Agencies Digital Guidelines Initiative. As the coordinator of the Library's online presentation of the National Park Service's Heritage Documentation Programs Historic American Buildings Survey, Historic American Engineering Record, and Historic American Landscapes Survey, Kit serves as an advisor to the HDP programs on digital documentation, including recent participation on the development of guidelines for documentary digital photography. Since presenting on the issues and challenges of preserving digital design documentation in 2010 at the Center for Heritage Conservation's Annual Historic Preservation Symposium, Kit has been a resource at the Library for exploring the issues related to preservation and access to digital design documentation. She received her B.A. degree as a Humanities Field Major from the University of California, Berkeley.

Kristine K. Fallon

Kristine K. Fallon, FAIA, joined the Chicago office of SOM in 1977 and contributed to the introduction of computer graphics to SOM architects nationwide. She began participating in architecture/ engineering/ construction (AEC) data exchange standards initiatives in the 1980's (IGES, PDES/STEP, IFC, COBie). She was principal investigator for the Art Institute of Chicago's study, Collecting, Archiving, and Exhibiting Digital Design Data and also served as an advisor to the MIT FAÇADE study. I am interested in the possibility of leveraging the information model that is inherent in international standards such as ISO 16739 (IFC) to support collection and archiving of a comprehensive set of information about digital designs.

Kurt Helfrich

Kurt Helfrich is an archivist in the National Gallery of Art's Gallery Archives where he works with staff to collect, preserve and make available historical records relating to the history of the National Gallery of Art. Materials include analog and born-digital files relating to all aspects of the museum's history and development including its exhibitions, acquisitions, scholarly and educational programs, as well as the design and construction of the West and East Buildings and Sculpture Garden. Previously, he served as archivist and collections manager for the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Drawings & Archives collections based at the Victoria & Albert Museum. While at RIBA he organized the 2013 symposium Archiving the Digital: Challenges in Preserving Design Records, which brought together international experts to discuss current preservation efforts and challenges in managing born-digital design records. Helfrich is an archivist and architectural historian specializing in twentieth-century American and European art and design. He received his MSc in the History of Modern Architecture in 1988 from the University College London, and his PhD in architectural history in 1997 from the University of Virginia. He is a member of the Academy of Certified Archivists.

Mark Rylander

Awarded "Most Likely to Succeed in Physical Science," Mark Rylander instead chose architecture and never looked back. As he worked for high-end corporate design firms over two decades, his exceptional manual drafting skills yielded to a series of evolving CAD/BIM platforms. Now a solo practitioner with three active partnerships, he faces the daily challenges of digital graphic communication and coordination in the new freelance economy. Mark received a BS in Architecture from the University of Virginia and a Master of Architecture from Yale University. He is a past Chair of the AIA Committee on the Environment and author of the Sustainable Design Chapter of Architectural Graphic Standards. He lives in Charlottesville, Virginia and works in cyberspace.

Mark Sweeney

Mark Sweeney is currently serving as the Library's acting Deputy Librarian. Prior to his current appointment, Mr. Sweeney served as the Associate Librarian for Library Services. He was responsible for carrying out Library Services' mission, which is acquire, organize, provide access to, maintain, secure, and preserve the Library of Congress's universal collection. This vast collection contributes to the advancement of civilization and knowledge throughout the world, documents the history and culture of the United States, and records and supports the creativity of the American people. Prior to his serving as the Associate Librarian for Library Services, Mr. Sweeney served as the Library's Director for Preservation. In this capacity, he was responsible for ensuring long-term, uninterrupted access to the intellectual content of the Library's collections through a multi-faceted preservation approach. The major programmatic areas he administered included binding, conservation, environmental monitoring and emergency response, mass deacidification, preservation reformatting, and preservation research and testing. Prior to his service as Director for Preservation, Mr. Sweeney held a series senior management positions at the Library of Congress. He was Chief of the Humanities and Social Sciences Division, which is responsible for reference and research services in the Library's historic Main Reading Room; Chief of the Serial and Government Publications Division; and Chief of the Preservation Reformatting Division. Mr. Sweeney has extensive experience in the selection, description, and preservation of library materials. For example, he coordinated the Library's role in the United States Newspaper Program (USNP), a cooperative national effort by the Library of Congress and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to locate, catalog, and preserve on microfilm, and make available to researchers newspapers published in the United States from the eighteenth century to the present. He also served as the Library's program manager for the National Digital Newspaper Program (NDNP), another cooperative initiative with NEH to enhance access to newspapers through the application of digital technology. Both efforts have been highly successful in preserving and promoting access to collections of the Library as well as other institutions, and they serve as models of national cooperation for the preservation of newspapers--an important part of the nation's cultural patrimony. Mr. Sweeney holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from McGill University, and a master's degree in library and information science from the Catholic University of America.

Matthew Allen

Matthew Allen is a Lecturer at the University of Toronto and a PhD Candidate at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design. He worked previously for Preston Scott Cohen on several computationally-intensive, award-winning projects in China. Allen's current research focuses on the history of computer-use by architects, particularly in the 1960s. He has curated exhibitions and written on the history of programming, the development of architectural software, and digital aesthetics. His most recent exhibition was titled "'Tell me about a Rhino command:' Software and Architecture Culture." The landscape and urban design practice founded in 1990 by Diana Balmori is recognized internationally for designing sustainable infrastructures that serves as the interface between landscape and architecture. Phil Rosche

Phil Rosche is an independent contractor based in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. Rosche's work has focused on Model Based Enterprise, Collaborative Design, Standards Development, Consortia Management and Industrial Improvement. He has over 28 years' experience in consortia management for research and development programs, systems interoperability testing, health care information technology, computer aided design, product data management, enterprise data sharing and exchange, and materials and production management. Phil plays numerous roles in the LOTAR International Project. He co-leads the CAx Implementor Forum (CAx-IF) with his European counterpart. He provides technical direction to the Leadership Team on emerging topics. Mr. Rosche has worked at both large OEMs, such as Volvo Truck, and at small manufacturing companies. Rick Zuray

Rick Zuray is a Technical Principal and has been with the Boeing Company for over 30 years working in the Quality, CAD/CAM/CAI, Industry Data Standards and Research & Development spaces. For the past 20 years Rick has been involved in Industry Data Standards support which includes: long term archival & retrieval of digital product and technical data, product life-cycle support, and data exchange methodologies. Rick co-chairs the LOTAR International consortium which is made up of the Aerospace Industries Association (AIA) AeroSpace & Defense Industries Association of Europe-Standardization (ASD-Stan), PDES, Inc. and ProSTEP iViP. This working group is writing a series of International Aerospace Standards designed to provide the capability to store, manage, exchange and distribute digital product and technical information in a standard neutral form that can be read and reused throughout its life-cycle, independent of changes in the IT application environment originally used to create it. Rick also co-chairs the ISO 10303-239 ed3 project which supports the development of the Product Life-Cycle Support (PLCS) application protocol. Rick also chairs the AIA Engineering Mgt Committee (EMC) LOTAR project, is a Boeing rep to the ISO TC 184/SC4 WG12, 21 and 22, and is the Boeing rep for the Project Management Team (PMT) under PDES, Inc. Stephen T. Ayers

On February 24, 2010, President Barack Obama nominated Stephen T. Ayers to serve as the 11th Architect of the Capitol. On May 12, 2010, the United States Senate, by unanimous consent, confirmed Mr. Ayers, and on May 13, 2010, the President officially appointed Mr. Ayers to a 10-year term as Architect of the Capitol. Mr. Ayers is responsible for facilities maintenance and operation of the historic U.S. Capitol Building, the care and improvement of more than 570 acres of grounds and the operation and maintenance of 17.4 million square feet of buildings including: the House and Senate Congressional Office Buildings, the Capitol Visitor Center, the Library of Congress Buildings, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, the Thurgood Marshall Federal Judiciary Building and other facilities. Tim Walsh

Tim Walsh is the Digital Archivist at the Canadian Centre for Architecture (CCA). Through research projects like Archaeology of the Digital, curated by Greg Lynn, and increasingly in its typical acquisitions, CCA actively acquires, preserves, and provides public access to the digital archives of architectural design projects. Among his other tasks, Tim is responsible for developing and managing workflows and software for processing these born-digital archives, overseeing arrangement and description of the digital archives by CCA's team of digital processing archivists, managing CCA's digital preservation repository, and ensuring that preserved archives remain accessible for research. Tim is also an active member of several collaborative efforts to address questions of preservation and access for digital design records, including the Society of American Archivist's CAD/BIM Taskforce and the Software Preservation Network.
