Angela Zhang

Angela Zhang, 17, is a senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics in Durham, North Carolina. At her school, she is an active member of the varsity Science Olympiad team and the math club. Additionally, Angela is a co-president of the Biological Society, and serves her school community as a member of the Orientation Committee and as a teaching assistant for the chemistry department. Outside of school, she is a soloist with the Chapel Hill Dance Theater, and also engages in many forms of dance, including ballet and traditional Chinese dance. She is part of the Research in Chemistry program at her school, and has conducted research in pharmacology, biochemistry, space nutrition, and cyber security. Angela began her current project last summer through the Howard Hughes Precollege Program at Duke University. Her mentors are Dr. William Parker, from the Duke University Medical Center, and Dr. Myra Halpin, at the NC School of Science and Mathematics.

Ivan Kuznetsov

Ivan Kuznetsov, 17, is a senior at William G. Enloe High School. Since his sophomore year he has been interning and conducting research in Dr. Alexei Saveliev's lab at the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State University. He is the lead author of a research paper published in Applied Energy, a recognized professional engineering journal. He is also listed as an innovator on two currently pending U.S patent applications. For his research Ivan was named a two-time Semifinalist of the 2010 and 2011 Siemens Competition in Math, Science and Technology. Outside of the lab and classroom, he is a senior board member and coach of Enloe's Science Olympiad team, captain of the Science Bowl team, as well as holds leading roles on the Quiz Bowl and Math teams. He has tutored his peers in math and science since middle school, and now he is a board member and group leader of the Science Days volunteering club, which has a goal of introducing local elementary school children to science and scientific concepts. In his spare time, Ivan is an avid chess and tennis player.

Jenifer Brown

Jenifer Brown is a 17 year-old senior at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM). As a 2010 NanoBusiness TALENT Fellow, Jenifer spent 8 weeks during the summer interning at Appealing Products. She was also one of four NC students to travel to Argonne National Laboratory to study nanotechnology for one week. In 2010, she was named Associate Member of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's Sigma Xi chapter. In 2010, Jenifer won first place in Advanced Biological Sciences at the 2010 North Carolina Junior Academy of Science meeting. As a result, she traveled to Washington, D.C. in February of 2011 to represent North Carolina at the annual American Junior Academy of Sciences convention. She was also named a Siemens Science, Math & Technology Competition National Semifinalist. At school, Jenifer is a treasurer of NIA: Ladies with a Purpose, and HOPE, an African-American cultural club. She is a Chemistry Teaching Assistant, plays soccer and basketball, and enjoys many types of dance. She is an avid YouTube fan and looks forward to what the future holds. Her mentors are Dr. AJ Attar of Appealing Products, and Dr. Myra Halpin of NCSSM.

Jonathon Kuo

Jonathon Kuo of the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics shares stories from his trip to China this month for the Beijing Youth Science Creation Competition. Jonathon was part of the delegation for the North Carolina International Science Challenge.
