James J. O'Brien

James J. O'Brien served for 35 years in the public port industry. He also served 5 years in the U.S. Merchant Marine and ocean shipping industry. James has been a speaker at numerous transportation conferences and educational seminars around the world including China, Taiwan, New Zealand, Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Israel and Canada. He has extensive experience dealing both locally and at the national level with legislators and numerous government agencies including U.S. Customs, U. S. Coast Guard, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Transportation Security Administration , U.S. Maritime Administration and Federal Maritime Commission. James has designed and conducted training programs for Port Management Training (AAPA/NAWE/MARAD) and for ports in China, South Korea and Nigeria. He designed the Port Security Plan/Program including waterfront worker background checks while Port Director at Port Everglades. This program was subsequently adopted statewide by the State of Florida for Florida's 14 seaports. James serves as a member of the Advisory Board on transportation and seaport matters for the Global Maritime and Transportation School (GMATS) at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
