Caleb Lee

Caleb Lee joined CMPT in 1996 and is responsible for the protocol writing, sample design and production for CMPT Clinical Microbiology and consultation of Water Proficiency Testing as well as for their Quality Control. In addition, Caleb is the main technical educator for our International EQA Training Program. Caleb Lee's initiative and research ability are essential to CMPT's innovative efforts to provide clinically relevant, stable, and realistic simulated samples. In 2005, Caleb successfully completed a certificate course in Laboratory Quality Management in UBC. In 2007, he finished the UBC Master of Health Administration. Caleb also obtained a Certificate in Project Management through UBC's Continuing Studies.

Dr. Lucy A. Perrone - Chairman

Dr. Lucy A. Perrone is a passionate, innovative leader of laboratory quality improvement programs and offers 18+ years' experience building and leading multicultural, multi-disciplinary teams to strengthen health and laboratory systems. Dr. Perrone was formerly the Director of Laboratory Systems Strengthening at the International Training and Education Center for Health and an Associate Professor of Global Health and Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington. Since March 2022, Dr. Perrone is the Donald B. Rix Professor of Laboratory Quality, and an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Medicine in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. Dr. Perrone is currently the Chair of the ISO 17043 -accredited and ISO 9001 certified Canadian Microbiology Proficiency Testing Program (CMPT), and the Director of the Program Office for Laboratory Quality Management at the University of British Columbia where she leads the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine's laboratory quality related programs. She holds a Bachelors of Biological Science from Fordham University, a Master's of Science in Public Health from Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, and a Doctorate in Infectious Disease Pathology from the University of Texas Medical Branch. Dr. Perrone's research and practice focuses on a systems approach to clinical and public health issues such as ensuring patient access to quality diagnostic testing, diagnostic network optimization ad sustainability, and improving laboratory quality, systems and governance. In her career, Dr. Perrone has worked closely with foreign governments, NGOs, UN agencies, private industry, and country-based community partners to design, improve, and deliver human-centric tools, innovative processes, and services that improve the health of people in the communities where they live. Dr. Perrone is a passionate educator and a highly experienced designer and implementer of educational programs to produce competent laboratory professionals, transferring deep knowledge of infectious disease pathology, diagnosis, and disease surveillance, as well as corresponding practical interventions for optimal diagnostic testing service delivery at national scale. Dr. Perrone values partnership and local empowerment to solve complex health problems. Dr. Perrone has applied these values in her work, cultivating effective, multi-disciplinary teams and bolstering local leadership to address complex health problems with projects in >25 countries in the Americas, Africa, Asia and the Middle East and Africa.

Esther Kwok

Esther Kwok joined CMPT as the program's coordinator in April 2004. Having worked in the business community, Esther understands the fiscal and public relations that are critical to the CMPT program. Esther administration capabilities and dedication to the program have been instrumental in guiding CMPT through a successful ISO 17043:2010 accreditation and ISO 9001:2015 re-certification. Esther has had many years of experience as a medical technologist in clinical laboratories working at UBC Hospital, St. Paul's Hospital and Lion's Gate Hospital. Esther has also experience in research and development and has specifically worked on the transport and stability of Neisseria gonorrhoeae samples. Esther has completed the Certificate course in Laboratory Quality Management. Esther will be pleased to answer any questions you may have about any of the CMPT programs.

Michael A. Noble

Dr. Noble is the founding Chair and former Managing Director of the Clinical Microbiology Proficiency Testing (CMPT) program. Dr. Noble is actively engaged in medical laboratory quality management as the chair of the UBC Program Office for Laboratory Quality Management (POLQM) and through participation with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Teaching and Education Center for Health (ITECH). Currently he chairs the Microbiology Working Group for EQALM: the European based international committee for medical laboratory proficiency testing. Dr. Noble has served as a consultant for the WHO - Quality Assessment programs for Southern Africa, the Department of Medical Science, Thailand: Water Quality Assessment and the Zimbabwe National Quality Assurance Program and continues to provide support and expert advice around the world. He is the force behind the Laboratory Quality Management Conference held every two years in Vancouver BC. This conference covers topics highly relevant to the medical laboratory quality and counts with national and international speakers and participants. Dr. Noble's academic education includes Medicine, Internal Medicine, Infectious Diseases, and Medical Microbiology. He is a sea-to-sea Canadian, having lived in Quebec, Ontario, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia. Awards Dr. Noble received the 2014 BC Quality Award in the Leadership in Quality category from the BC Patient Safety & Quality Council (BCPSQC).

Shadi holds a MSc degree in Medical Microbiology and a BSc degree in Biology from the Mashhad University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Shadi has worked as a medical laboratory technician and microbiology researcher in Iran and has experience in molecular biology, cell biology techniques, bacteriology, biothechnology, and immunology.

Veronica Restelli

Veronica also manages CMPT's Professional Development course and works with Dr. Noble in the design and writing of manuscripts for publication. Veronica Restelli is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina where she obtained her BSc degree in Biochemistry from the University of Buenos Aires and completed a residency in Clinical Microbiology. Upon moving to Canada in 1999, she obtained her MSc. in Biotechnology from the University of Manitoba. In 2004 she moved to Vancouver to work as a Research Associate for Twinstrand Therapeutics, a biotechnology company focusing on cancer treatment. In 2009 Veronica joined CMPT as Editor and is now also responsible for the web content management for CMPT's site. As CMPT's Editor, Veronica coordinates the writing and distribution of CMPT's newsletter -Connections-, the program educational critiques, CMPT's Annual Report, and current news.
