I have been recommending vitamin and mineral supplements to my patients with macular degeneration since the late 1980's because of various studies showing possible help in preserving vision function. But it was the "Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS)" published in the Archives of Ophthalmology in 2001 that truly demonstrated to the Ophthalmic community the potential of slowing the progression of macular degeneration with a specific combination of vitamins and minerals.
