BANKSTOWN OPERA COMPANY

When the first stage productions were put on in Bankstown is a matter of conjecture, as there seems to be little documentation. There were apparently three companies presenting musicals and two companies doing plays. The Bankstown Opera Company was founded in 1931 and the first show produced was "The Quaker Girl". Musical shows were presented regularly until the intervention of World War 11, which depleted the ranks of male members and the company was disbanded... Bankstown Theatre Company (formerly known as Bankstown Theatrical Society) is a community non-profit organisation whose objective is to stage high quality musical productions and plays... It was decided then to branch out into musical theatre and the first musical produced was "Rose Marie" in 1950. So the musical society and the repertory company combined and the Bankstown Theatrical Society was formed.
