In the early 1980's the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin (then UCCM, now Mnidoo Mnising or UCCMM) saw the potential for a building material supply outlet to serve the demand from First Nations and other Island communities. Consideration was given to the purchase of an existing business or the establishment of a new building material supply outlet on Manitoulin Island. In 1984 an Economic Feasibility of a Lumber and Building Material Supply Outlet on Manitoulin Island was prepared by consultants from Willowdale, Ontario. This study recommended the establishment of a new business that would create employment opportunities and allow UCCM to supply its own members as well as others..
