Dr Carly J Randall

Job Titles:
  • Benthic and Restoration Ecologist
Dr Randall's marine science career began in the Caribbean, working on the sexual reproduction of corals, and evaluating the impact of warming oceans on the early life-history stages of corals. She then went to work with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's coral reef task, to evaluate the impact of sedimentation from land-use change on coral reproduction and recruitment. Later she returned to academia to investigate the impacts of coral-disease outbreaks on coral populations in the Caribbean. During this time, diseases were becoming a major challenge for reefs in the region, and Dr Randall applied spatial-ecological modelling approaches to test questions of disease causation and transmission, by identifying environmental drivers. The need for effective and large-scale coral restoration became increasingly obvious during her years working in the Caribbean, which led her to pursue a career at the Australian Institute of Marine Science that combines developmental biology, marine ecology, & restoration science. Dr Randall's current research focuses on overcoming the settlement and post-settlement survival bottlenecks in the early life-history stages of corals for use in reef-restoration activities. She investigates coral larval-settlement cues, and combines large spatial scale field studies with the results from laboratory experiments in the National Sea Simulator, to improve coral restoration methodologies.

Dr Muhammad Azmi Abdul Wahab

Job Titles:
  • Research Scientist
Dr Muhammad Azmi Abdul Wahab is a benthic ecologist with >10 years research experience in tropical marine environments of Australia, from shallow intertidal habitats to mesophotic reefs. His research seeks to understand biological, ecological and environmental processes that contribute to population maintenance and dynamics of marine invertebrates, in particular marine sponges and corals. He is interested in a broad scope of topics that encompass taxonomy and systematics, biodiversity, reproduction, larval and early life-history ecology (behaviour, dispersal, recruitment and responses to stresses), in situ growth and mortality, coral aquaculture and reef restoration.

Dr Richard Brinkman - COO

Job Titles:
  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Chief Operating Officer / Operations
  • Townsville / Operations
Dr Richard Brinkman is Chief Operating Officer at the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS). As a member of the AIMS Leadership Team, he is responsible for strategic and operational leadership of Health, Safety and Environment, Infrastructure and Facilities, and Engineering and Field Support, including Vessels and Diving Operations. Prior to taking on the role of Chief Operating Officer, Richard was an AIMS Research Program Director (2015 - 2021), leading a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of research scientists, scientific and technical support staff, dispersed across three locations Australia-wide. Dr Brinkman has a PhD in Oceanography and is an adjunct Professor at James Cook University, Townsville. Through his extensive research and management career, Richard has a detailed understanding of the science delivery chain from observations and data collection through to solutions and impact. He has more than 20 years of practical, operational experience with research infrastructure and vessel operations and management."
