Dr. Black joined CHSPR as the Centre's director from 2002 to 2007. As director, she brought clarity and focus to CHSPR's strategic direction and oversaw the integration of the Centre's five research units into a single coordinated entity. Currently, she is Associate Director of the UBC School of Population and Public Health. In addition to her leadership roles, Dr. Black is a nationally recognized health services researcher. Her work focuses on creating population-based information systems, using administrative data to monitor the quality and effectiveness of medical care, and developing data-driven tools to improve health care delivery. Prior to joining CHSPR, Dr. Black was a founding member and co-director of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy at the University of Manitoba. She serves on the board of directors of Saskatchewan's pioneering Health Quality Council, and has consulted in the restructuring of the American system of health statistics. Dr. Black obtained her medical degree from the University of Manitoba and her doctorate in health services and policy research from The Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland.

Dr Rubee Dev is an Assistant Professor in the UBC School of Nursing and Associate Faculty in the UBC Centre for Health Services and Policy Research with a research foci in global health and primary health care nursing. Dr Dev is a principal investigator of the BC Primary Health Care Research Network (BC-PHCRN) and co-director of the BC arm of the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (BC-CPCSSN). Her work entails extensive research to identify the data gaps and opportunities for action in meeting the needs of global maternal and child health and improving care delivery in primary health care settings, mainly through collaboration, partnerships, and knowledge translation.

Dr. Jason M. Sutherland is a Professor in the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research (CHSPR) in the UBC Faculty of Medicine, School of Population and Public Health; the Program Head, Health Services and Outcomes, in the Centre for Health Evaluation & Outcome Sciences; and has been Canada's Harkness Fellow in Clinical Practice and Health Policy.
Dr. Sutherland's research spans two complementary themes: health system funding policy and patients' outcomes from surgery. Dr. Sutherland has been active in advising provincial and federal governments on healthcare funding policy.
Dr. Sutherland is Interim Director of CHSPR, the director of the Masters of Health Sciences program in the School of Population and Public Health, the editor-in-chief of Healthcare Policy, and an associate editor of Health Policy. Dr. Sutherland's current research projects include cross-sector funding policy and investigating associations between healthcare funding policy and patients' health and health outcomes.

Dr. Jessri is an expert in public health, nutritional epidemiology, surveillance and methodology, biostatistics, as well as public health nutrition policy and her program is uniquely at the intersection of population and public health and nutritional sciences and dietetics. The overarching goal of her research program is to provide the evidence-base and decision tools to inform national guidelines and policies for reducing the burden of chronic diseases.

Dr. Michael Law holds the Canada Research Chair in Access to Medicines, and is a professor in the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, School of Population and Public Health, at the University of British Columbia.
Michael's research program focuses on pharmaceutical policy. His work focuses on access to and the use of prescription drugs, including the affordability of prescription drugs, private drug insurance, generic drug pricing, and the impact of pharmacist prescribing. His research program has attracted more than $2.5 million in research funding, including 4 operating grants from CIHR as principal investigator. Currently, his program of research includes studies in several countries, including Canada, Rwanda, Uganda, Namibia, and Colombia.
He has been published in leading medical journals, including BMJ, Archives of Internal Medicine, and CMAJ. This work has been featured in news media such as New Scientist, Forbes, the Globe & Mail, and USA Today. He has also authored commentaries that have appeared in the Toronto Star and Vancouver Sun. His research has had a major impact on generic drug pricing in Canada, leading to policy changes that have saved governments the country more than $100 million every year.
Since his appointment at UBC he has received several notable awards, including a Canada Research Chair (2015), a Distinguished Achievement Award from the UBC Faculty of Medicine (2012), the Labelle Lectureship at McMaster University, the 2011 Paper of the Year Award from the CIHR Institute for Health Services and Policy Research, a Canadian Institutes of Health Research New Investigator Award, and a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar Award.
In 2015, he taught one of UBC's first edX.org Professional Education courses on Interrupted Time Series Analysis.
Prior to joining UBC, he completed a PhD in Health Policy at Harvard University and a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where he trained in research methods and statistics. He has also completed an MSc from the London School of Economics, and worked as a research associate at the University of Auckland, New Zealand.

Kimberlyn McGrail is a Professor in the UBC School of Population and Public Health and Centre for Health Services and Policy Research and Scientific Director of Population Data BC and Health Data Research Network Canada. Her research interests are quantitative policy evaluation and all aspects of population data science. Kim is Interim Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Population Data Science, the 2009-10 Commonwealth Fund Harkness Associate in Health Care Policy and Practice, 2016 recipient of the Cortlandt JG Mackenzie Prize for Excellence in Teaching, and 2017 recipient of a UBC award for Excellence in Clinical or Applied Research. She was part of the Expert Advisory Group for the pan-Canadian Health Data Strategy and is currently a member of the Global Partnership for AI as part of the Data Governance Working Group.

Morris L. Barer is Emeritus Professor in the Health Services and Policy Division of the School of Population and Public Health. He was the inaugural Scientific Director of the Institute of Health Services and Policy Research (one of the thirteen Canadian Institutes of Health Research). He was the founding Director of the Centre for Health Services and Policy Research, serving from inception in 1990 to 2001, and again from 2007 through 2012. Dr. Barer has served on the Federal/Provincial/Territorial Advisory Committee on Health Services, as senior editor for Health Economics with the journal Social Science and Medicine, as a member and Vice-Chair of the Board of Trustees for the Canadian Foundation for Healthcare Improvement (and its predecessor the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation [CHSRF]). Dr. Barer delivered the Justice Emmett Hall Memorial Foundation lecture in 2004, and was the recipient of the Health Services Research Advancement Award (from CHSRF) in 2006. He is a fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

A founding member of the Centre, Dr. Evans is a lifelong leader in academia and an internationally esteemed health economist. His groundbreaking comparative studies of health care systems and funding strategies have shaped policy in Canada and provided insight to governments and health agencies worldwide. A decorated academic, Professor Evans is the recipient of Canada's highest honour for lifetime achievement, as an Officer of the Order of Canada. He also served as a member of the British Columbia Royal Commission on Health Care and Costs in 1990, and of the National Forum on Health, chaired by the prime minister of Canada, from 1994 to 1997. His canonical works, "Strained Mercy: The Economics of Canadian Health Care" and "Why Are Some People Healthy and Others Not? The Determinants of Health of Populations" are considered classics in the field.
In addition to serving as an Officer of the Order of Canada, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and an Institute Fellow of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research, where he was director of the Population Health Program from 1987 to 1997. He is also an honorary life member of the Canadian College of Health Services Executives and of the Canadian Health Economics Research Association, and a member of the National Academy of Social Insurance (US). In 2001, he became the first Canadian (and the second non-American) to win the Baxter International Foundation Prize for Health Services Research.

Dr. Wong's research examines the organization and delivery of health care services within the context of primary health care. A recognized leader in research involving patient-reported quality of care, her work contributes to informing practice and system level interventions that seek to decrease health inequalities among Canadian residents, including people who face multiple disadvantages in accessing and using the health care system such as those who have language barriers and live in poverty. Her long-standing commitment to research has significantly contributed to further understanding and application of primary health care in helping to reduce health and health care inequalities.

Dr Sheps' research focuses on surgical and health service wait times, adverse medical events, measuring quality of care, and trends in the use of care by the elderly in British Columbia. He is also currently the principal investigator on a Health Canada-funded project assessing approaches to governance and safety in non-health industries. He co-authored results from the Canadian National Adverse Events Study, has published on acute care utilization and the impact of hospital downsizing, and serves as a reviewer for numerous journals (CMAJ, CJPH, Social Science in Medicine, JAMA). Dr Sheps earned his MD from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland, completed his residency training in pediatrics at the Montreal Children's Hospital, was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at McGill University where he obtained an MSc in epidemiology, and spent a year at the London School of Economics in the Department of Social Planning and Administration.
