Dr. Cary Schwartzbach is a specialty care physician board certified in orthopedic surgery. He has been an orthopedic surgeon with Inova since 1989, serving at Inova Fairfax Hospital. He has a special interest in the management of orthopedic injuries, especially shoulder, elbow and knee.
Most recently, Dr. Schwartzbach is an Assistant Professor of Orthopedics at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine and an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at George Washington University School of Medicine. He has been the Orthopedic Trauma Section Chief at the Inova Regional Trauma Center since 2002. Dr. Schwartzbach initially became interested in orthopedics because of his many injury visits as an active youngster. This interest became a passion, first in college doing orthopedic research and then in medical school participating in the care of patients with musculoskeletal ailments. His goal is to help his patients recover from their injuries, not just physically but emotionally and spiritually as well.
A native of New York City, Dr. Schwartzbach currently resides in Fairfax with his wife and three children. In his spare time he likes to read, bicycle, and work out.

Dr. Stephen Malekzadeh is a specialty care physician board certified in orthopedic surgery at Inova Health System. He has been a surgeon at Inova for the past 8 years specializing in management of fractures, nonunions, malunions, deformity correction, pelvis and acetabular fractures/injuries, infections, and hip and knee joint replacement surgery.
Dr. Malekzadeh has been active in research, publications and teaching. Notably, he has co-authored a chapter on pelvic fracture surgery in a leading orthopedic surgery textbook. He has also contributed to numerous publications in leading orthopedic medical journals. He is active in resident and medical student education and has served as faculty on educational courses for other orthopedic surgeons both locally and nationally.
Dr. Malekzadeh became interested in orthopedic surgery because of the opportunity it provides to directly and immediately help those who have been affected by a life altering condition or injury. His ultimate goal and passion is to not only surgically address the issue at hand, but to help the patient and family through their difficult ordeal in the long-term.
A native of Rockville, MD, Dr. Malekzadeh currently resides in suburban Northern Virginia with his wife and children. In his spare time he likes to coach his children's various sports teams, restore classic automobiles, and play ice hockey, basketball and soccer.

Gregory Trimble, MD is Vice-Chair of the Department of Medicine at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and the Assistant Dean for Faculty for the VCU School of Medicine, Inova Campus. As a Vice Chair, he works primarily with the subspecialty divisions of Endocrinology, Geriatrics, Gastroenterology, Palliative Care and Rheumatology. Dr. Trimble received his medical degree from Virginia Commonwealth University Medical School in 2003. James Ecklund, MD, FACS, is the President, Inova Neurosciences services line and Professor and Chairman, Department of Neurosciences, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus.
Since joining Inova in 2007, Dr. Ecklund served in a variety of roles including as Medical Director of Neurosciences, Inova Health System. He has overseen the phenomenal growth of the Inova neurosciences service line to prominently represent every subspecialty in the field of neuroscience medicine. He has helped to advance Inova's research and education programs in neurosciences, including establishing a neurosurgical residency program.
While leading the neurosciences service line for the Inova Health System, Dr. Ecklund has maintained an active clinical practice specializing in complex brain and spine surgeries. His diligent focus on patient care and outcomes attract patients from local, national and international sources.
Dr. Ecklund's primary clinical interests are complex spine and neurotrauma. His research interests include military relevant neurotrauma with a specific emphasis on blast and penetrating injury.
Prior to joining Inova, Dr. Ecklund served for 10 years as Professor and Chairman of the Neurosurgery Program of the National Capital Consortium, which included Walter Reed Army Medical Center, the National Naval Medical Center and the Uniformed Services University. During this same period he directed a neurotrauma laboratory at the Uniformed Services University. He is a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and was deployed as a neurosurgeon to both Afghanistan and Iraq. His program received the vast majority of American neurotrauma casualties. In 2011, at the request of the Supreme Allied Commander Europe, he delivered presentations to the members of the Ministries of Defense in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania on blast-induced brain injury and advanced prosthetic technology.
Dr. Ecklund has authored more than 160 academic publications and abstracts, including a published textbook, and has lectured in more than 20 countries globally. He has served as a reviewer for many peer-reviewed journals, including The Journal of Trauma, Neurosurgery, World Neurosurgery, The Lancet Neurology, and Physiological Measurement.
Dr. Ecklund has been awarded the "A" Designator by the Surgeon General of the Army for excellence in neurosurgery, was inducted into the Society for Military Medical Merit, and was elected to both the Senior Society of Neurological Surgeons and the Society of University Neurosurgeons. He has been endowed the LTG William H. Arnold award and the AUSA award for best exemplifying the longstanding traditions of the U.S. Military Academy and the U.S. Army. He has in addition received the General Graves B. Erksine award as the Outstanding Resident at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, and the MG George P Hayes Award for Outstanding Faculty Member in the National Capital Consortium Neurosurgical Program and has favorably received the David C Wherry Emerging Technology Award.
Dr. Ecklund maintains wide involvement in the 'profession' of the neurosciences field and has assumed numerous leadership positions within neurosurgical and national organizations, including Chairman of the Membership Committee for the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Chairman of the Joint Committee for Military Neurosurgeons of the AANS and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, President of the Washington Academy of Neurosurgery, and Program Director for eight consecutive years of the International Spine and Peripheral Nerve workshops.
He has served on multiple oversight and advisory boards for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the U.S. Department of Defense, the National Institutes of Health, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Neurotrauma Foundation and Brain Trauma Foundation. He served on the Committee of Trauma and currently is a Governor for the American College of Surgeons. He is also the AANS representative to the National Trauma Institute. He served as the Chairman of the Board for the Hugh and Carolyn Shelton Military Neurotrauma Foundation. He is a founding member of the Mackey-White National Football League Players Association Committee for Player Health and is the NFL's lead unaffiliated neurological consultant for FedExField. He is also the Independent Neurological Consultant for the Washington Commanders and the Neurosurgical Consultant to the Washington Nationals.
He obtained his undergraduate education at the United States Military Academy. He obtained his medical degree from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences and subsequently completed his neurosurgical residency at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 1993.
Dr. Ecklund lives in Gaithersburg, MD, with his wife of over 33 years, and is the father of five children and eight grandchildren.

Madeline Erario, MD, FACP is vice-chair of the Department of Medicine at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and Director/DIO for Graduate Medical Education for Inova Health System. Dr. Erario is a graduate of Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed her residency training in Internal Medicine at Georgetown University where she also served as a medicine chief resident. She is board certified in Internal Medicine and is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians. Since joining Inova in 1998, Dr. Erario's role on the medical staff has allowed her to pursue her interest in Graduate Medical Education and develop as a leader in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Erario has served as the Vice Chair of Medicine since 2005. Her current role is Vice Chair of Academics and subspecialties to include: Critical Care, Pulmonary and Cardiology. Dr. Erario has completed professional development work through the Stanford Faculty Development Program for Clinical Teaching and the Yale Primary Care Program for Medical Education and Research. She has also completed a two-year fellowship program at the Advisory Board Fellowship for Healthcare Leaders in Washington, DC. Most recently, she completed the Inova and Sg2 Physician Leadership training at Inova. In 2002, Dr. Erario received the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area Human Rights Award for her work with political refugees. As part of her commitment to addressing healthcare disparities, she was appointed as a founding Board member to the Northern Virginia Area Health Education Center at George Mason University in 2017.
As Director of Graduate Medical Education and the DIO for GME, Dr. Erario led the ACGME accreditation for our Institution and has overseen the ongoing accreditation for general surgery, podiatry, pediatrics residencies and various fellowships. In addition, under her leadership, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus has developed new residencies in Internal Medicine, Ob/Gyn and Neurosurgery and most recently a fellowship in Cardiology. Because of Dr. Erario's ongoing work in developing GME at Inova, she was awarded the Parker J. Palmer, Courage to Lead Award from the ACGME in 2017. This is a prestigious award given to high performing DIO's across the country.

Zobair M. Younossi, MD, MPH, FACP, FACG, AGAF, is the Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus and Vice President for Research of Inova Health System. He is also Professor of Medicine, Virginia Commonwealth University, Inova Campus and Affiliate Professor of Biomedical Sciences at George Mason University.
Dr. Younossi earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in Rochester, New York (Alpha Omega Alpha, 1989), and completed his residency in internal medicine as well as a fellowship in gastroenterology and hepatology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, California. During his residency and fellowship, he earned his master of public health degree from San Diego State University (SDSU) School of Public Health in San Diego, California, being awarded both the Hanlon Award and Outstanding Student Award for SDSU. He then served as the Staff Hepatologist and Senior Researcher at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio (1995- 2000).
In 2000, Dr. Younossi was recruited to establish Inova's Center for Liver Diseases. The center is currently well known for its excellence in clinical hepatology, teaching, and research. Inova's Center for Liver Diseases is not only involved in "cutting-edge" clinical trial protocols and outcomes research projects, but also has pioneered research in genomics and proteomics of obesity and its related liver diseases. The center has participated in over 90 research projects in translational research, outcomes research, and "cutting edge" clinical trials.
In 2006, Dr. Younossi was appointed Executive Director of Research for Inova Health System. In this capacity, he has developed new research infrastructure to support clinical, translational, and outcomes research carried out by Inova investigators. These efforts resulted in establishing the Center for Integrated Research in Fall of 2008. In 2008, he was then promoted to Vice President for Research of Inova Health System. In 2010, He was selected to become Chairman for the Department of Medicine, Inova Fairfax Medical Campus. He also serves as Vice Chairman as well as Senior Executive for the Inova Foundation Board. In 2013, he was appointed to the Board of Directors of the American Heart Association for the Mid-Atlantic region and was recently appointed to the Board of the American College of Gastroenterology Institute.
