IMMUNE TOLERANCE NETWORK - Key Persons

E. William St. Clair, MD, serves as the Co-Director for the Immune Tolerance Network. He is currently Professor of Medicine and Immunology at Duke University Medical Center. Dr. St. Clair has extensive experience in the design, implementation and coordination of both small and large, multi-center trials, having been the principal investigator for numerous trials of novel therapies for rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic vasculitis. Dr. St. Clair also has relevant experience in translational research, which is the conceptual framework that forms the basis for all trials in the Immune Tolerance Network. He is the principal investigator for the Duke Autoimmunity Center of Excellence, providing leadership for a portfolio of basic and clinical studies focused on the role of B cells in autoimmunity. Furthermore, Dr. St. Clair has served on several Data and Safety Monitoring Boards. In addition to serving as an ITN Deputy Director, Dr. St. Clair is Chair of the ITN Site Review Committee, which is responsible for ensuring feasibility of ITN trials, the efficient use of ITN resources and the monitoring of ITN sites.

Mark Anderson, MD, PhD, serves as Network Director for the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN) where he previously has been a member of ITN's Network Steering Committee and head of the mechanistic studies leadership team. At UCSF, Dr. Anderson is the Robert Friend and Michelle M. Friend Endowed Chair in Diabetes Research, Director of the Diabetes Center, a practicing Diabetologist, and a leading expert in the understanding of autoimmune diseases and their underpinnings. His major scientific contributions include unraveling the mechanisms by which a key transcription factor called Aire promotes immune tolerance and development of translational approaches that involve manipulating this key tolerance mechanism. Dr. Anderson has served in leadership roles in the field of autoimmunity including serving as President of the Federation of Clinical Immunology Societies (FOCIS) and as chair of the Hypersensitivity, Autoimmune and Immune-mediated Disease (HAI) study section for the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Anderson was also recently elected to the National Academy of Medicine. Dr. Anderson earned his PhD in Immunology and his M.D. from the Pritzker School of Medicine at the University of Chicago. He completed a residency in internal medicine at University of Minnesota and a fellowship in Adult Clinical Endocrinology at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Philip Bernstein trained as a cell biologist at the McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research in Madison, Wisconsin and with Dr. Günter Blobel at the Rockefeller University in New York City. Dr. Bernstein left the bench to work as an editor for Nature Biotechnology, The Journal of Experimental Medicine and at the Public Library of Science where he helped launch PLoS Biology. He subsequently returned to the laboratory as the Head of Scientific Affairs and International Relations at Insitut Pasteur-Korea. Dr. Bernstein joined the Immune Tolerance Network in 2008 as the Executive Director of Strategic Review and Planning. In this capacity, Philip manages the peer-review of new proposals and arranges and coordinates strategic assessment groups to analyze specific areas within the ITN's portfolio. Philip Bernstein, PhD, is the contact for all media requests.
