John Pearn

Job Titles:

Emeritus Professor John Pearn is a senior paediatrician at Queensland Children's Hospital. For many years he served as Professor of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Queensland and the Royal Brisbane Women and Children's Hospital. His research publications in international literature have contributed to child safety and welfare, clinical genetics, neuromuscular disease and medical ethics. During his career John Pearn also served as a doctor-soldier in the Royal Australian Army Medical Corps where he was promoted to Major General and became Surgeon General of the Australian Defence Force.

Lynne Borgert

Lynne began working with Muscular Dystrophy Queensland in June 2018 to commence the allied health service. In addition to providing services directly for her clients, as clinical lead Lynne mentors our allied health team professionals and provides strategic direction regarding the ongoing development of current and future services. Lynne has been working with children and adults living with muscular dystrophy and neurological conditions for most of her career, working mainly in the disability sector but also under the aged care system, she has experience of the physiotherapy needs for people with neuromuscular conditions, particularly in a community setting, across the whole lifespan. She holds a Bachelor of Physiotherapy, a Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) and is due to complete her MBA studies in February 2022. Lynne feels privileged to be working in a role she loves, with clients and colleagues she greatly admires and is committed to making a positive contribution to the people she works with and the greater neuromuscular community.

Mr Peter Denham

Mr. Bob McDowell

Bob is a pharmacist and has been a pharmacy owner for over 30 years. He is a member of the Pharmacy Guild of Australia and has served on the Qld branch committee for 12 years. During that time, he has been a member of various committees and has also held the position of Vice President Finance. As well, Bob was a member of the Local Advisory Committee of Pharmaceutical Defence Ltd (PLD) and was twice President of the Alderley Kindergarten. Diagnosed with facioscapulohumeral dystrophy (FSHD), he enjoys helping others living with neuromuscular conditions in his role as company director of Muscular Dystrophy Queensland. Bob was appointed to the board in 2019.

Mr. Gavin Ruddell

Gavin is a Chartered Accountant, Registered Company Auditor and a Director of Nexia Brisbane Audit with almost two decades of experience in public practice and commercial finance roles. As well as his financial skills set, he brings to the board considerable expertise in corporate governance and risk management. Gavin holds a Bachelor of Commerce and is completing a Masters of Applied Finance and is a Justice of the Peace. Gavin's expertise has already been invaluable in managing current challenges resulting from recent transformational change in the business environment. Gavin was appointed to the board in April 2020.

Mr. Tony Biggar

Tony is the founding Legal practitioner and Director of Big Law Pty Ltd solicitors of Strathpine. He was admitted as a solicitor in 1984 and from 1986 to 1998 carried on practice in Monto. Since 1999 he has practiced in the Moreton Bay Region. Tony was appointed to the Muscular Dystrophy Queensland board in 2016 and is a committed Director. His legal expertise continues to add value to decision making on our skills based board. As well as general expertise Tony's areas of specialty are property law, business law and wills and estates. For many years, Tony has been a member of the Property Law and Practice Committee of the Queensland Society. He regularly presents papers at seminars; continues to act for a number of clients from the North Burnett Region; and is the Honorary Solicitor for several community organisations in Monto. Tony is married to Wendy who is an Occupational Therapist and they have three adult children.

Mr. Tristram Peters

Tristram Peters is the Head of Community Engagement at Clickability, a disability service directory that helps match NDIS participants with providers. He's also the co-host of the Grow Bold with Disability podcast, exploring with his guests the funny, taboo, and uncomfortable side of living with disability. Tristram is also a keen powerchair football player, having represented both Queensland and Australia. He sits on the Queensland Powerchair Football Association (QPFA), Australian Powerchair Football Association (APFA), and Asia Pacific Oceania (APO) executive committees for the sport, helping steer power football's development. His Labrador, Jasper is also the coolest dog in the world.

Mr. Victor Attwood

Victor was appointed to the Muscular Dystrophy Queensland board in 2016 and has been its highly respected and dedicated Chairperson since 2017. Victor brings to the board his extensive experience in the public sector, in governance, and also his experience of living with a neuromuscular condition. At the age of 21 Victor was diagnosed with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, a neuromuscular condition. Victor was a member of Ipswich City Council from 2000 and Deputy Mayor from 2004 until his retirement from politics in 2016. Victor has served on several boards and actively supports many local community groups, school and sporting clubs as well as the army of volunteers dedicated to supporting them.

Penelope has over 25 years working in the not for profit, community and disability sector. She began her career as a Social Worker and a highlight of her career was 6 years as CEO of Muscular Dystrophy NSW.

Penny Deavin - CEO

Penny leads the development and implementation of Muscular Dystrophy Queensland's integrated fundraising, communications and marketing program to build engagement with our community and ensure that, through their support of our charitable programs, our donors achieve their philanthropic goals. She also leads the finance team, manages our information systems and serves on Muscular Dystrophy Queensland's Risk & Finance and Marketing & Fundraising committees. Penny has a background in finance and administration and joined Muscular Dystrophy Queensland in 2005. She worked in various roles within the organisation before being appointed as Fundraising Manager in 2015, her first leadership role with us, and quickly thereafter was promoted to General Manager - Business & Development which draws upon her broad skillset. She obtained a Graduate Certificate in Business in 2020, receiving the Griffith Award for Academic Excellence that year and is currently completing an MBA. Having worked in the muscular dystrophy community for many years, she is passionate about improving outcomes for people living with muscle wasting conditions and drawing on the strengths of community to create necessary change.
