On May 7, Alex Mayer discussed the challenge of developmental education for low-income college students in New Jersey and nationwide, citing recent innovations and growing evidence about what works to overcome barriers to college success. The strongest programs integrate several strategies, combining opportunity and obligation to address multiple student barriers.

Giles is a research assistant in the Family Well-Being and Children's Development policy area. She works primarily on the long-term follow-up phase of the Mother and Infant Home Visiting Program Evaluation (MIHOPE). Before joining MDRC in the summer of 2022, Giles interned with the International Rescue Committee's Youth Tutor Program. She also worked as a curriculum development intern at ThinkGive, a nonprofit that develops social-emotional learning curricula. Giles graduated with a bachelor's degree in psychology from Williams College.
Ratledge joined MDRC in 2012. As a research associate in the Postsecondary Education policy area, she works closely with community colleges, technical colleges, and open- and broad-access institutions to implement and evaluate programs aimed at improving graduation rates for students. Her primary areas of focus are student support programs, developmental (remedial) education, and financial aid innovations. She also leads MDRC's rural higher education work. Ratledge has authored MDRC reports for several studies, placed articles in peer-reviewed journals, and written for publications including The Hill, Higher Ed Dive, and Community College Daily. Ratledge holds a bachelor's degree in public policy from Brown University.

Taub is a research associate in the Family Well-Being and Child Development policy area at MDRC. She is currently working on the impact evaluation and implementation research for the Variations in Implementation of Quality Interventions (VIQI) Project and the Expanding Children's Early Learning (ExCEL) Network Quality Study, both of which use a three-group randomized control trial design to investigate the relationship between classroom quality and children's outcomes.
